Not sure if anyone saw the interview with Drew Brees as a guest on Dan Patrick show today. During the break between his segment and just before Adrian Peterson came on for his segment, Drew and Dan were off to the side and Patrick asked him about Purdue and what's it going to take to turn that place around.
Now, I didn't hear him ask that specific question because the audio wasn't fully picking their conversation at that point. However, Dan did mention Joe Tiller (which I heard clearly) and finished his sentence, and I could distinctly hear the portion of Drew's response that went like this:
"Why can't we (Purdue) be like Baylor? Baylor doesn't get top-tier recruits. Just run the spread and score a ton of points."
Patrick: "But everyone's afraid of doing that in the B1G"
Drew: "Yeah, but ....man, ya gotta keep up with the times"
Patrick: You gotta beat the others at their own game, right?
Drew: Yeah, but everyone's running a version of the spread, whether its read or, you gotta score points. We're (Purdue) not going to win games 21-20, we've gotta win games 42-30.
Patrick: "Well what did you guys average (offensively at Purdue)
Drew: Awww man, we were top 5 in the nation in most categories.
Patick: But it was fun to .............
Dan gets cut off as they come back from break, so Dan and Drew shake and hug, followed by the same with Drew and AP.
Very interesting that, like the majority of the rest of us, we can see that Purdue needs to stick to the spread and high-scoring offense that has brought us so much success. Interesting that Drew is keeping a close tab on it and is realizing that recruiting isn't going to ever meet the level of the "big boys", but points to a program like Baylor as one that has success (recently) in spite of the very same challenges facing Purdue.
