I just got home from watching Zionsville vs Harrison tonight and came away very underwhelmed by Derrick Smits. For a 7 footer, he did not impact a high school basketball game nearly as much as he should have. He seemed very weak and soft, and was easily pushed around and out of the paint by players much smaller than him. Not to mention, any time he was out muscled he would throw his hands up and look at the refs. He got the nickname "cry baby" from the student section due to his antics. He didn't have a toughness that is necessary in the Big 10 and left much to be desired from someone with his gift of height. I don't think that Purdue will or should offer him a scholarship. That being said, he is still young and has time to develop. I just don't see an edge there that he needs in order to succeed at the high D1 level.
