16 Days To Purdue Football: Dolapo Macarthy And Garrett Hudson

Brace Hemmelgarn-US PRESSWIRE

A former walk-on receiver and the freshman son of our defensive coordinator are featured today.

Many of the remaining days on this countdown will have two players, as NCAA rules allow for two players to wear the same number as long as they are not on the field at the same time. That often leads to one offensive and one defensive player wearing some of the more popular lower digit numbers.

Dolapo Macarthy - Jr.

Merrillville, Indiana (Merrillville HS)

6'5", 220 pounds

Wide Receiver

2013 Projection: Starter at wide receiver

Garrett Hudson -Fr.

Tallahassee, Florida (North Florida Christian)

6'3", 230 pounds

Linebacker

2013 Projection: possible contributor at linebacker

Both of these players took very different paths to Purdue. First, let's look at Macarthy. Dolapo began as an interesting dual-threat quarterback that was rated the 15th best such prospect in the country. A lot of schools were very interested in him, but he ended up doing a prep year at Hargrave Military Academy. He didn't last there before ending up at Fort Scott Junior College in Kansas for a semester.

In the fall of 2011 he decided to walk-on to Purdue. Eventually, he shifted from quarterback to wide receiver, where he saw action in 11 games last season. He started slow, but by the end of the season he was one of Purdue's top targets. He finished with 28 catches for 252 yards and a touchdown. Now he is expected to be Purdue's best receiver as he is a big target with excellent hands. He is also now officially on scholarship as a hidden gem Danny Hope found.

As for Hudson, he is at Purdue because of his dad. His dad moved from Florida State, where he was the linebackers coach for an excellent unit, to become Purdue's new defensive coordinator. Garrett himself is a promising player at 6'3", 230 pounds, but was not a highly rated recruit by most services. He is a redshirt candidate this year as a true freshman, but if he shows good instincts he may get a shot to play immediately at linebacker.
