I have no delusions about Purdue winning the Big Ten in football this year. Yeah, we'll throw a wrench into the whole system when we upset Ohio State in November, but we're not going to Indy, much less winning there. Still, the initial title odds were released today and they were surprising:
Odds to win the 2013-2014 Big Ten Conference
Ohio State 5/6
Michigan State 15/2
Ohio State is, of course, a big favorite even though I think they lose at least twice this year. What surprised me the most is that the sad-sack Indiana Hoosiers have better odds than Purdue.
Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.
The final parting gift of Danny Hope was having Indiana somehow pass us in regards to national football respect. Yes, Indiana will have an excellent offense, but unless they have something that even remotely looks like a run defense they have no realistic shot. It's not to say here that they are wrong in saying IU has a better shot to win the Big Ten than Purdue because they do. It is just embarrassing that it has happened.
Purdue's odds are only better than Illinois, who went 0-8 in the Big Ten last year and has no major reason to think a big turnaround is in order. hopefully this is just a little more fuel for our boys as they prepare for the season.
If I were a betting man I would be tempted to take Northwestern as a dark horse at 10/1.
