Today's player is another former walk-on turned starter, one of at least three such players that is likely to start this year. He is a senior too, meaning his last go-round should be his best:
Kurt Freytag - Sr. (5)
Carmel, Indiana
6'2", 240 pounds
Fullback
2013 Projection: Starter at fullback.
I originally thought that Freytag was a senior last year, but it turns out he had one more year of eligibility this season. He joined the team as a walk-on in 2009, but did not play that year or in 2010. Finally, in 2011 he saw the field for the first time, getting one carry for no yardage in four games as a reserve. The need for a fullback arose, however, and Freytag saw extensive playing time last year by splitting duties with Brandon Cottom.
Last season Freytag earned eight carries for 47 yards and even had a touchdown on a 7-yard run against eastern Kentucky. He also caught three passes for 32 yards, 31 of which came on a nice catch and run against Indiana in the Bucket game.
Freytag made Indiana's Class 5A state finals with Carmel three times, winning it all as a junior but losing as a sophomore and senior in 2006 and 2008, respectively. As a fullback he is a hard -nosed player that often dishes out punishment for guys like Akeem Hunt with little glory.
With more of a focus on the running game we will likely see Freytag more as an experienced player this year. he could get a carry or two per game. Most of his time will be working as a bulldozer for a stable of talented backs behind him.
