I've been seeing a lot of opinions thrown around when it comes to this year's freshman. I decided, rather than take everyone's biased opinion, to look up the stats since they tell the true story.
Big Guys:
AJ Hammons/Donnie Hale vs Hanner Perea/Peter Jurkin
Perea/Jurkin combined - 0.9 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 0.1 assists pg, 0.2 steals pg, 0.3 blocks pg, 40% FG, 40% FT
Hammons - 11 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 0.7 apg, 0.4 spg, 2.1 blocks pg, 50% FG, 69% FT
Hale - 4.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, .3 apg, .3 spg, .4 bpg, 41% FG, 52% FT
Adv: Purdue and its not even close
Small Forwards:
Jeremy Hollowell vs Rapheal Davis
Hollowell: - 3.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 0.4 apg, 0.2 spg, 0.5 bpg, 1 turnover per game, 40% FG, 67% FT, 19% 3PT
Ray Davis: 5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 0.7 apg, 0.5 spg, 0.2 bpg, 1 turnover per game, 47% FG, 60% FT, 27% 3PT
Yuck, both these players have been pretty bad but Davis is superior in stats and shoots better.
Adv: Purdue slightly
Point Guards:
Yogi Ferrell vs Ronnie Johnson
Ronnie: 9.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1 spg, 2 turnovers, 36% FG, 60% FT, 15% 3PT(ouch!)
Yogi: 7.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1 spg, 2 turnovers, 38% FG, 78% FT, 32% 3PT
This one is a little tougher to call. On the one hand, Ronnie scores more and is a better rebounder. On the other hand, Yogi averages a half assist more per game and shoots a tad better from the field. While they are both poor 3 PT shooters, Yogi at least shoots in the low 30's and can hit a free throw.
Adv: IU slightly
I think both of these classes have been a bit of a disappointment based on expectations(thats more on us as fanbases than it is on these players though). However, I really like the potential of Purdue's class. I guess if I had to rank the freshman in order based on their season stats I'd have to go:
Hammons
Yogi
Ronnie
Ray Davis
Donnie Hale
Hollowell
Perea
Jurkin
