Recruiting rankings are pointless, but none the less ESPN has updated their recruiting rankings. Kendall Stephens has fallen to #66 in the 2013 class and it listed as the #16 shooting guard in the class. Bryson Scott is the #33 shooting guard, and Basil Smotherman is the #33 small forward. I tend to believe the individual position rankings are more important than the overall rankings as they show a truer comparison of talent due to similar skill sets.
For comparison I went back and looked at how current members of the team were ranked.
The Freshman: Ronnie was the #18 PG, Ray-D was #15 SG, Jay Simpson was #33 PF, and AJ hammons was #19 center.
The 2011 class had Lawson as the #26 PF
2010 Travis Carroll #27 PF and Donnie Hale #34 PF. TJ was #34 SG and A. Johnson was #54 SG.
2009 DJ Byrd #25 SG, Chooch was #15 C. The defunct GDB was #43 SF and Bade #80 PF
There has been alot of criticism of Painter's recruiting lately but when you look at the level of players he has signed, he's consistently been in the the top 20-40 at each position. I personally don't think we as Purdue fans should be asking for much more. The incoming class is very similar, when looked at in the scope of the positional national talent level to our current players. I keep reading that when next years class gets here we'll be much better (I believe we will too) but it's all in terms of development once they get on campus, and how much stock you put into recruiting service rankings!
