So glancing at our current recruiting situation over at Verbal Commits, it seems that we are in kind of an odd position. For 2014, we currently have 3 verbals (Vince Edwards, Dakota Mathias, and Jacquil Taylor), 4 open offers (JaQuan Lyle, Jay Henderson, Dmitri Thompson, and Marlon Jones), with 3 Spots left. Sure, early signing is coming up - so lots of recruits are coming off of the boards. Bluiett and Blackmon recently committed. Lots of lower rated players are making their choices too. Still, having 3 openings, vs. 4 offers seems strange for Purdue. Especially given that I've seen almost nothing about three of the four, and Lyle.... well, that would shock some folks if we pulled that one off...
So what's next?
Looking closer at our scholarship grid, I may see the answer. Come May, 4 players will be leaving us, and outside of Neal Bashears, we'll have a grand total of zero seniors. So despite not pulling in the biggest Grad transfers on the market this summer, I have to imagine that Painter is thus far pretty satisfied with Carter and Peck. So maybe that's the plan for 2014 also. Even if we pickup one more out of HS for 2014, I have to wonder if Painter has his sights on some Grad transfers who can fill in that experience/maturity gap that Cater and Peck are filling now.
Doing so would give those scholarship spots right back to him come 2015.... where we currently have a more Painter-esque 15 open offers.
