I wanted to share a few stats about the early going for our Boiler basketball team. Let me start out with the good. Currently the team is shooting 49.8% from the field and scoring 87.5 ppg, both of which are significant improvements over previous years. This is slightly tempered by the fact that the schedule has been loaded with cupcakes so far but we are still shooting well regardless of the level of competition. The bad is that we are allowing 70.25 ppg to these inferior opponents which is probably about 10 ppg too high, we are still not performing on the defensive end and for some reason we are not feeding the post and playing an inside/out game. This last one worries me because I believe the offense needs to run through the post specifically through AJ. Everyone will say how lazy he is but his teammates are not getting him involved on the offensive end and thus he does not become engaged on the defensive end. I don't believe he is lazy (this year) rather I believe he is on an island by himself with no life raft from his teammates. This can also go back to coaching by not telling everyone to run the offense to run through big AJ. Finally the ugly. We have been dreadful at the 3 pt line and free throw line. Our percentages are 31.1% and 63.3% respectively. If we are not at 37% and 70% at least we are going to be chewed up and spit out by better competition. There simply is too much talent on this team to approach the same type of season we did last year. With that being said I still see us being an 11-2 type non conference team, an 11-7 or 12-6 type conference team for a 22-9 or 23-8 season prior to the B1G tournament. Things will get better because we are still very young. BOILER UP!!! OBTW I am very excited to be going down to Orlando to watch Purdue in person next week.
