Danny Etling(who I have deemed as The Duke of TDs) started his first game for us yesterday. It did not go the way Purdue fans wanted.
Danny Etling finished 14 of 35 for 184 yards. 1 TD(to Yancey!) 1 INT.
Those stats are obviously not what we were hoping to see from Etling. He is young - and made some horrific FR mistakes yesterday. But, his arm looks great. He is pretty athletic. He has great chemistry with FR Deangelo Yancey.
So, there is definitely potential there. I started thinking about other players first career starts. I wondered if Etling's performance stacked up against some of the greats.
In 1994, a QB started his first career game midway through his FR season(just like our own Duke of TDs).
Here are his stats for that game:
7 of 14 passing for 74 yards. No TDs. His team won 10-9 behind a strong defense.
Any guesses who this mystery QB(who had the same yards per attempt as our own Danny Etling in his first start) might be?
Come on... I know all of you Colts fans know it...
Peyton Manning. Thats right - Peyton Manning's first ever collegiate start produced less than half of the passing yards that Etling put up, and did not see a passing TD(unlike Etling's).
Yes, yesterday sucked. Yes, Etling made some FR mistakes. But, the future looks bright for Etling. He is going to put up some gaudy stats in his Boilermaker career, and I believe we are going to hear a lot of Etling-to-Yancey TDs the next 3 and a half years.
