MP builds top 20 roster for 2014-16

I like how Painter has constructed the roster. I expect to see 4 winning seasons ahead of us, with us making the NCAA tourney 3-4 times and ranked consistently in the top 20, and we will be darkhorses for a FF.

To move from a top 20 type team that is potentially a FF darkhorse team.....to a top 5-10 ranked roster which would be a clear FF favourite, we probably need one or two NBA early entrant caliber player in the 2015-2016 recruiting class. Another Glenn Robinson would be perfect, but even a Hammons or Landry or Moore (someone good enough to make first team All BIG by their second year) is enough to push us over the hump

Who is that 2015 recruit? Keady got his Big Dog in his 10th year as Purdue headcoach. Next year would be Painter's 10th year, so his Big Dog moment might be coming soon. I suspect Painter will land his highest rated recruit yet, possibly his career defining recruit, sometime in the next few years. Mind you, I am not saying it will be an overall #1 draft pick, but it will be the one that defines his career, for better or for worse.

The four scenarios are

Best Case Scenario. Land a high five star, make the FF. Go down in history books as the best Purdue coach ever.

Likely Scenario 1. Land a high five star, don't make the FF. Be remembered as a coach who was almost as good as that perennial nearly man Keady.

Likely Scenario 2.. Don't land a high five star, make the FF nonetheless. Be remembered as a top tier coach and third rate recruiter.

Worst Case Scenario. No five star, no FF, do not pass go, do not collect $200

-----------------------------------------------------------------

2013. Top 30ish team. Expectations are to make the NCAA tourney, making the second round would be exceeding expectations.

2014. Expectations would be NCAA second round or E8, depending whether Hammons stays. If Hammons stays, I'd say a top 15-20 team.

2015. Hammons is gone but with 6 upperclassmen, I expect them to be a fringe top 20, Sweet 16 type squad

C - RsJr Simpson. 6‘9 / So Taylor 6‘9

PF – Jr Smotherman 6’7 / So Edwards 6’7

SF – Sr Davis 6‘5

SG – Jr Stephens 6’5 /So Mathias 6‘5

PG – Sr RJ 5’10 / Jr Scott 6‘1

2016. With 7 upperclassmen, I expect them to be a fringe top 10-15, Sweet 16 or Elite Eight team.

C. - Sr Simpson. 6‘9

PF – Sr Smotherman 6’7

SF – Jr Edwards 6‘7

SG – Sr Stephens 6’5

PG – Sr Scott 6‘1

With a pair of juniors Mathias and Taylor off the bench
