Steve has the basketball wrap pending later tonight, so that allows me to write on Darrell Hazell's latest recruit. Dezwan Polk, a two-star outside linebacker from Columbus, Ohio committed to the Boilers today in the class of 2013. Polk played at Whetstone High School in Columbus, where he was weighing offers between Indiana and Purdue. A later reported from ESPN showed that he was going to walk on at a MAC school before he accepted Purdue's offer.
As you can see, he is not highly regarded, but that can mean very little. Dustin Keller went from lightly regarded two-star to First Round NFL draft pick, so hard work can definitely pay off for a kid like this. Polk has the potential to be a very big linebacker and possibly move to defensive end. He's 6'4" 210 pounds with good speed listed as 4.6 in the 40. Here are some highlights.
His limited statistics on MaxPreps had him with an interception, a fumble recovery, and a safety in three games. He also had a touchdown on offense. His team went 4-6 in Ohio with some wildly absurd scores to start the season.
Other than all that there is not a lot of information out there. I found some of his track statistics, where we can see he is quite the athlete. He competed in the 400, high jump, and long jump. He looks like a project of a recruit as one of our lowest rated guys, but those projects can pay off.
