Earlier, I walked past the Mackey Complex area, and could only imagine how active it will be a week from today when volleyball starts up again (I also walked past Danny Hope. The man seriously never goes anywhere without a whistle). Luckily, for those who really want to see some earlier action, the annual Gold and Black Scrimmage will be tomorrow at 3pm in Belin Court, which is open to the public (unlike Illinois where it costs $5 to get in. Purdue FTW.) I unfortunately have previous commitments tomorrow and won't be able to make it out there, but for those who do go, let us know how it went. Afterwards, there will be a "Meet the Team" event, where you can personally meet some of the players James and I have featured the last 2 weeks, including newcomer and Tippecanoe County's own Amanda Neill.
Amanda Neill (Freshman)
Lafayette, IN (McCutcheon)
2012 Projection: Early action/Back-up
While Neill was at McCutcheon HS, she earned Team MVP her senior year after earning 392 kills, 303 digs, 52 aces and 40 blocks, leading her team to the Sectional Title that same year. Her stats garnered her Journal and Courier Big School Player of the Year, 3 All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference honors, 3A-4A Indiana North All-Star team, as well as being named to the All-America Watch list before her senior year. Her talents weren't just limited to the volleyball court, as Amanda ranked in the Top 100 Indiana Elite All-Star basketball players as a senior and National Honors Society.
In my interview with Coach Shondell, he mentioned how Amanda Neill is a "quality player, very good athlete, and a very solid athlete." I don't think Amanda will be getting that much action throughout this season, but I also think she is not going to red shirt due to the need for players in the back court this year. I can certainly see Amanda getting some playing time in those early morning matches, and subbing in at times throughout the season. It would be great to see her get some action every game, but I'm not sure if that will be the case with the amount of returners on this team.
