Ralph Bolden -- Hard to think we can expect a lot only nine months after his third ACL tear.
Brandon Cottom - Also returning from ACL surgery, and may be more of a fullback.
Gavin Roberts - A fifth year senior that has played in only four games... as a linebacker... all in 2009.
Derek Jackson - A fifth year senior fullback with no career carries
Kurt Freytag - A senior walk-on with one career carry.
This year we can expect a lot of Raheem Mostert, Rob Henry, and Antavian Edison getting carries in the backfield. Next year, however, is even more then with Shavers, Bolden, Roberts, Jackson, Freytag, and Edison are all going to be gone and Henry may be at quarterback. We need guys that can come in and fill a role at running back immediately from the 2013 class.
Enter our newest commitment: Keyante Green.
Green had originally committed to UCLA, but visited Purdue this weekend and decided to switch. Mostly, it looks like he wants to play early and UCLA is already going after a local four-star talent. Green is a 5'9" 190 pounds running back from McDonough, Georgia. He plays for Eagles Landing Christian Academy, where he has been listed as a solid 3-star prospect by almost every service.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had this to say about him:
This past season, Green rushed for 970 yards and 16 touchdowns while leading ECLA to the Class A semifinals. Green, who missed five games with an injury, also played defense and finished with 104 tackles, including 21 for losses and 6 sacks.
There is extensive video on him, first from his freshman season:
Next there are some highlights from 2010:
Finally, here is 2011:
This is a guy that has been a stud for a solid high school program for three years. Last year his team was 12-2 and lost in the state semifinals. He has been more than a fixture on both sides of the football for this successful small school. He rushed for 1,433 yards and 22 touchdowns as a freshman in 2009. In 2010 he rushed for 1,292 yards and 26 more touchdowns. Combined with his above junior year stats he has 3,695 yards rushing and 64 touchdowns. It's not outside of the realm of possibility that he can finish his high school with an astounding 5,000 yards and 100 touchdowns.
This is more than a solid pickup for 2013. With only Akeem Hunt returning as a reliable option in the backfield there should be plenty of carries for him as well. Let's welcome this new Boiler. I can't wait to see him tear up the turf at Ross-Ade next fall. He is a definite playmaker we sorely need.
