40 minutes. That's how long a college basketball game is. For whatever reason, our Boilers failed to realize that in both contests against the Hoosiers. The first half was an abomination. I stated in my preview that we needed to shut down the perimeter and stay composed.
Neither of those things happened in the first half. IU shot over 56 percent from deep in the first half, as we decided to double or triple team Baby Jesus. This left Matt Roth wide open to snipe us for nine points in the first half. Down by 15, Matty at least got the team to show some fire in second half.
The key play happened with just under two minutes to go. I believe the lead had just been cut to six or seven by a Ryne Smith three. Robbie Hummel quickly gave the foul, which meant it was his fifth. I'm almost certain Rob didn't realize that it was his fifth and his reaction seemed to confirm it.
I think that RH thought his foul on Watford wasn't a foul. I believe that he felt that was a ref stoppage to fix Watford's contact. Either that or he forgot about an earlier foul. This left us without our best guy down the stretch and we didn't get any closer.
It's a dirty secret, but I believe IU is the worst matchup in the Big 10 for us. They have a bunch of guys that are between 6'5 and 6'8 that are athletic as can be. This is a horrid matchup for us, especially since we like to play four guards.
We get Nebrasketball in the BTT on Thursday night. I believe the game should tip around 8 EST. Winner gets to play Ohio State and I would love some revenge.
As a final though, best wishes and speedy recovery to Michigan State forward Branden Dawson. It seems the Purdue curse reached out and grabbed him as a torn ACL will end his season. He's not popular in Boiler Nation, but a torn ACL is something we don't want to see for anyone.
