2014 will be BIG recruiting year !
With the loss of Travis and Sandi the term Big is where the focus will be. Here is a name you may not have heard of but Painter has Amanze Egezeke at 6'7 205 from Huntley Illinois he plays for the Wolves AAU team. Along with Bates-Diop CMP may be doing his one stop shopping to fill his need for big. In an interveiw for a Michigan blog he said Purdue is intressed in him but has not offered. Purdue did offer Bates-Diop and he is now said to be a strong Purdue lean. With these two and Sean Sellers 2014 could be a really good year. I would keep an eye on the wolves as Purdue is trying to harvest their talent. I.E Stephens and Jordan Ash.
On a personal note I had a medical setback but I am doing Ok.

Welcome back!
Thanks for the great info. as always!
Thanks
I love coming here and reading your posts about who we are after. Hope you are feeling better and every things ok.
Take care dude
Hope your prediction is correct!
oh no
said to be a strong Purdue lean
hope this isn’t the same people that said the same for Dawson.

Any idea on Bates-Diop?
I can’t really find anything about his play or rating. Scout has him as a 3 star and rivals users have him as a 4.8/5. I really don’t feel like using either of those for a recruit who is only a sophomore currently.
Read that he's jumped from 6'0 to 6'7
So the hope is that he’ll be another Anthony Davis.
that's an awfully high bar
considering A.D. is a national POY candidate and probably #1 draft pick. it is nice though when you get a guard who’s used to handling the ball go through a growth spurt. Jay Simpson was like that too, and you can tell; he’s got a great handle for a big fella.

Davis is an animal
Might be the first to sweep all three major awards. Not saying I wouldn’t love a player like that, but that is an incredibly high bar to set.
Agree A.D. is a VERY high bar
But in order to give an idea, I need that high bar to make my point. Like, someone (fairly or unfairly) compares AJ to be Reggie Miller or TJ to be Smooge 2.0 or Lawson to be JJ 2.0.
I think he'd benefit from another year in college
Hopefully add weight to his frame.
Hopefully he doesn’t pull a Jared Sullinger and totally blow his draft stock with injuries.

You mean potentially?
I don’t see Sullinger dropping that far just because of an injury back in December.
by Beavis Beefcake on Feb 9, 2012 5:31 PM EST up reply actions
Last year is a weak draft and Sullinger could have gone higher
But I give props to him for sticking around even though it is not the popular decision for athletes these days.
why do you give him props though?
by your own admission, he hurt his draft stock by sticking around. the argument for sticking around was the uncertain labor agreement, but all things being equal you have to sell high and go when your stock is at its highest

There are two ways to look at it
Tim Duncan doesn’t need to stay for an extra year. Neither does Peyton Manning. Neither does Andrew Luck. These guys are all #1 picks (Luck pending) and that they’ll be #1 pick too had they come out a year early, and I think if they come out a year early they’ll be a good pro but having that extra year allows them to become a great pro (again, Luck pending). So you can either maximize the short-term interest (getting draft higher) or the long-term interest (having a better pro career), and I think the easy choice is the former but the better choice is the latter.
With Sullinger, he won’t be a #1 pick last year (nor this year). But, I admire him sticking to his words. He’s said early on last year that he’ll stay regardless, and he was true to his words. Thus, I have a lot more respect for Sullinger than Derek Willis, and Sullinger is only a couple years older so don’t give me the “he’s just a kid” B.S.
fair enough

currently projected at 8th to the Jazz
was a top 5 last year. So dropped but not significantly enough to say he screwed up

in the NBA's structured rookie wages?
if we assume he is selected between 3-5 and is indeed selected 8th this season, he cost himself between $2-4 million. So the answer becomes what is a National Championship worth and do you believe that you’ll survive to your second contract? If so then it was worth it because that second contract will give him more money than he’d know what to do with.

At some point extra $ means little
Say, 1.5 mil a year vs 2.25 — I think I could survive and support family on either.
I mean, I have found I wouldn’t take a raise unless the situation’s right and I make a lot less.
by Beavis Beefcake on Feb 10, 2012 3:10 PM EST up reply actions
Unfortunately, guys like Antoine Walker can't support even at 10x that amount
Say, 1.5 mil a year vs 2.25 — I think I could survive and support family on either.
Oh well
So he won’t get stuck on a super shitty team like the bobcats? Probably works out in his favor not getting stuck in a terrible situation.
But going to the Bobcats means he can see MJ everyday
…at least that was my wish growing up :-)
I sort of wanted to get away from the barrage
Of MJ publicity.
And I was that sort of person who’d ask him why his shoes were so darn expensive and if they were really worth it.

I think he would benefit as well,
but I think he’s as ready as any freshmen or sophomore in the country this year. He might as well go when his stock is as high as it is now because he will continue to develop regardless of where he is playing. If he’s projected as the number one pick this year, he’s obviously not going to improve that next year. So the only reason he would stay is if he wanted to enjoy the college game another year and try to win a title if he doesn’t this year.
fast riser
in the major rankings updates in May he’ll be a top 100 probably closer to 50

First off, Glad to hear you're doing better.
I was missin me some Oldboiler. Your thoughts on 2014 are music to my ears. If CMP can keep the momentum going with a strong class in 2014 (another top 25?), I feel confident that we will be a consistent force to be reckoned with for years to come. Painter + talent = FF.

Hope you're doing well
If you need a break from this, well, yeah. We understand.
I had to take a couple days off work but could remote access in etc. Easy to take health for granted.
Hope he can grow another inch or two. Looks like Painter was right about investing in recruiting. 6’7 205 is good size but not awesome for a PF. Is he assumed to be a great target partially because he should grow a bit more?
1 Mcdonald's All-American please?
Thanks for the update oldboiler. I love recruit updates especially after watching how bad we are currently. Anyway, how many total McDonald’s guys have we got since they’ve started it and will we ever get another one? Cody Zeller=McDonalds=INSTANT IU success. What would just 1….ONE…guy who is great do for us?

Hold on just a second
Is that the little brother of Evan Turner?!
I'll take that
But good luck getting him away from OSU

Just happened to go to the same hs and have the same last name. But yes, I know what you mean that they all went to different schools.

He has two older brothers. Nothing about a younger brother.

Must be a coincidence then.
Same last name, basketball player, AND at the same school Evan played at. Maybe he is a cousin or something.
He doesn't even look like Evan...
Facial complexion different than Evan’s
Also Turner is a more common name than Zeller or Teague.
To your call once more we rally...
Where's the BIG out of those players?
I mean they are 3 or small 4 players based on how they describe their games. When I think of a big, I think of Zeller, Hammons, Nix, Sullinger. These guys just sound like another Stephens and Smotherman.
Bates grew 7 inches in one year. He is 6'7" now and may grow even more
Which is why you hear about him having a guard-esque game. I would love a big guy who can run the floor with the ball. Too many big guys these days can’t run and dribble well at all.
Not that they won't grow..
but you remember an Indiana H.S. standout named Greg Oden? I remember him being close to 7’ when he was 15. He looked like a 25 year old man, full facial hair and all, out there with a bunch of H.S. boys.
Yeah Oden is a sad case...
his body was 25 when he was 16… now it’s 45 when he’s 25
To your call once more we rally...
Great to have you back OldBoiler
And I really hope you are doing great!
One thing though, let’s take it easy with all the talk of guys being Purdue leans. It isn’t just you, but I think we should temper ourselves a little bit, especially with these kids being so young.
I’m not saying I know better than anyone whether or not anyone is leaning anywhere (and you could very well be right about Diop) but I think we should hold off on getting our hopes up so early in these recruitments.
Just a thought.
Turn that OK into Great
Get better, there is a need for the old line perspective here and there aren’t enough of us with you out.
Was that "BIG" supposed to also draw attention to the number of tall recruits that we are looking at?

What about Dmitri Thompson?
He seems to really like Purdue. This is based on his Twitter (which isn’t much) but he has said some real pro-Purdue things. Also, Painter has seen him play in person.
by Jackson Brunner on Feb 10, 2012 1:48 AM EST reply actions
Purdue was in on him early
and I don’t know a ton about him, but Purdue and Central Florida are the only reported teams to offer to date. Florida and Florida State have shown a lot of interest too and if they get involved I don’t see him leaving the state. That being said he is supposed to be a fantastic scorer with pretty good handles that could still use improvement.
-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.
Thanks for the info.
Purdue is a rising program…which could actually get him to leave Florida if he really like Coach Painter. You never know. I agree though, Florida and FSU getting interested would make it tough.

Hey
Jackson saw where you tweeted " I could careless about IU" agree ! Why so many others want them to fail is beyond me I care about Purdue not anyone else .
Haha yeah...
I get really fierce about defending Purdue on twitter. Some moron tried to definitively tell me that Purdue won’t do anything in the next 10 years. boilerbryce33 and I just blew him off.

Great to have you back OldBoiler. Priorities: 1. Get Healthy 2. Keep digging up info on these recruits! Get well soon and glad to see you back!
Thank you
Avoided the knife for now one bypass Op. Is plenty put me in hosp. for three days because my wife has good insurance LOL. Now she is mothering me to death.
Who is Ash
I keep hearing him mentioned as a big time Purdue lean, but I’ve never really heard much about him.
He is a 2015 recruit.
And a very, very good point guard who has tons of athleticism. It is really early, but he is a front runner to win Mr Illinois Basketball by his senior year.
haha just a little bit early
saying as it is still about 3/4 of the way through his freshman year

by TimeToPlayHard on Feb 13, 2012 11:54 AM EST up reply actions
Haha I know.
Kinda ridiculous that the places that I have found info on him say things like that. But he is very good, and if he continues to develop the way he has he may very well be a top 50 player and possibly a 5 star recruit by his senior year.
just like when people were stating Lyle was an IU lean
here we are 4 months later and IU is essentially no longer in the picture. Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan State all seem like the heavy hitters in that battle.
-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.
calling him a big time Purdue lean
is a bit hasty. i cringe a little when i hear about “leans” and “favorites”, but he has been around the purdue program a lot. he’s a hell of a talent; if we get him our fanbase should be thrilled.
