Where's the Post??
It is painfully obvious that Purdue has no post presence whatsoever. In the 20 or so games that I've watched, I don't believe I've seen one pass into the post. Our opponents know that there is no threat and can play help defense on our drives to the basket all game long. It's pretty simple to leave your man when you know 99 times out of 100 he isn't getting the ball.
Travis Carrol is a huge disappoinment!! He has no offensesive game at all (I think he might be the only 6'9" person in the country who can't dunk), his defense is below average and I don't see him getting any tough rebounds. I know that players don't get much playing time if they can't play defense, but I would gladly trade poor defense for good rebounding and some sort of offensive production from the paint. That's why I think Lawson should be getting the start and considerably much more playing time then Carrol. Lawson has more athletic ability in his pinky than Carrol does in his whole body. Lawson isn't afraid of jumping and taking the ball to the rim, not to mention his ability to block shots is something that can make players change their shot from time to time. Aren't we all a little sick of watching Carrol miss layups, when there is a guy on the bench that can throw it down? Anyone remember Herb Dove and Justin Jennings? Those types of players give the team a spark when they do something athletic.
Also, with Robbie's struggles to hit any shot outside the paint, why not have him posting up more? If anything, he'll get to the free throw line a few more times and he's our only player that is confident there. Rob has clearly lost a step and driving to the basket isn't happening for him. He needs to be in the paint and do some damage from there. I wonder if Painter is regretting his decision to red shirt Hale and keep Carrol on the team? Don't they need another TE to back up Bade?

So we're back to bashing Carroll?

This would be nice, however this does not support your claim that Lawson should play over Carroll. Carroll averages more rebounds per minute than Lawson and also does a much better job boxing out to help his teammates be able to get the rebound. Offensive production is basically a wash. Lawson averages 0.2 ppg more in 2.7 minutes less, but neither is really a back to the basket player who will get you points in the paint.
I wonder if Painter is regretting his decision to red shirt Hale and keep Carrol on the team? Don’t they need another TE to back up Bade?
I hate comments like this. What good would it do to have Carroll off the team? Support the team we have, not the one you wish we did.
The sky is falling!!!
see www.boiledsports.com today! Sometimes it takes a big man awhile to be successful.
I don't know who you've been watching
But I’ve been okay with Carroll’s play. It’s not his fault he never gets the ball.
Reaction images? I got 'em
Senior All-American Alto Sax
I’d disagree with the last part. If he had an inside game he’d get the ball but he doesn’t. Mix that with him not really trying (it seems) to even get the ball and take it inside.
He’s not horrible but offensively he’s a ghost and since we have no major inside scoring threat it turns our offense into a mix of guards shooting jumpers and three pointers so that is a huge reason why our offense has faced issues with inconsistency.
If we had a big that we could just pitch the ball to and they could do the work inside to score, we’d be doing a lot better. Carroll simply is not that guy right now

That assumption is questionable
If he had an inside game he’d get the ball but he doesn’t.
Not to say that TC has an inside game (he doesn’t – he can crash the board sometimes and putbacks, but his best weapon is actually a jumper), but if you watched the Duke-Miami game you would see that the Miami’s R. Johnson who had 26 pts and 12 rebs or sth like that didn’t get the ball when the game is on the line b/c their stupid guards won’t bother to work on passing him the ball (or pass it so badly that it becomes a TO).
My point is, just b/c there is a low-post guy doesn’t mean the ball go inside, as stupid as that is.
I know exactly who I've been watching
Don’t you think if he showed any kind of offensive ability, Painter would see to it that he got some touches inside? Let’s say he doesn’t have the best post moves, most decent big men can at least pass the ball from down low and that isn’t even an option with him. He is used to screen and rebound, that’s it. Look at what Michigan did to us with the screen and roll. We can only dream of Carroll doing that on day!!
The funny thing tho,
no matter what kind of numbers/stats one comes up with (and I realize numbers/stats are big part of the way alot of fans/students/alumn on here look at or analyze sports/life in general due to the type of student/alumn of Purdue University) but I know what I SEE, and its NOT HARD TO NOTICE that the above poster is correct.
Not “bashing” Carroll, he’s just not B10 material

In my opinion Lawson can actually score inside and create shots, something I don’t expect from Carroll. I’ve also read he’s struggled picking up the offense which is probably why he’s not out there as much.
To be honest, while I like what I’ve seen from Lawson, he honestly reminds me of if Kelsey Barlow was a power forward:
- Can be strong offensively, yet will have games where he does absolutely nothing and just wings it
- Can drive to the rim for the dunk with ease at times and doesn’t seem to even try to do so in other situations
- Can play defense but has an issue with constantly fouling

The only problem I see with this so far in the season...
is that Lawson has had some trouble catching the ball. And most of those struggles have been when he is open, not when he is fighting someone for position in the post.
I think the kid has lots of potential to be everything you’re pointing out here, and I hope that those skills arrive soon, but its going to take a bunch of work.
Lawson is not the answer. He’s way too raw and out of control most of the time. If you are truly gonna hate on someone, hate on Marcius. I don’t care how many injuries or whatever conditions he’s had; this guy wasn’t even good enough to supplant the absolute worst version of Travis Carroll and and 2-fouls-in-a-minute Lawson. There is a serious lack of Marcius hate here!
I'm not bashing Carrol here but
His defense last game was ok. It probably been better if he didn’t have to worry about touching someone and drawing a call. The thing is, Carrol is not a post-player offensively. He has no turn around jumper, no hook shot, etc. That is what we are missing, and it hurts our offense dramatically without an option down in the post.
Carroll is a good player
right now he’s a better option than Lawson. And another thing, Herb didn’t give the team a spark, he treated the ball like it was grenade with the pin pulled, and never dribbled more than four times in a row. Justin Jennings on the other hand was a stud, and I wish we would land a team full of players like him.
BTW, TC was Gatorade Player of the Year for Indiana
(That’s the same award that Tyler and Cody won)
The thing I don’t understand is why no one bothers to bash Sandi? (Not that I approve any bashing) But why bash TC when he is probably playing the best overall among the LCM.
(BTW, for those who were bashing Painter for recruiting, is getting an in-state POY not good enough?)
Because we see TC more often?
Hard to bash someone when you rarely see him. And some people tend to assume what we don’t see is better than what we see. (Hale could be the difference, Painter should bench all the seniors, etc, etc.)
Sandi has been playing basketball for only a handful of years.
He is quite athletic though. The only issue I have with TC (expectations obviously not being as high as someone with tons of potential like JJ) is he doesn’t really have post moves. He is not really a threat to score by posting someone up and that hurts the offense a lot.
Just curious, how long has Perea been playing bball?
Ryan Watson also didn’t play football until 8th grade. Now he’s a 4-star recruit coming to Purdue and we are not giving him a free pass. Sandi has been with our program for the third year now, it’s about time he shows us sth.
I honestly have no idea.
I am fairly confidant that Sandi had only played for a handful of years before college.
How does Gatorade name the state POY?
I’m sure they take factors other than on the court into account, because there’s no way TC was even close to the best player in Indiana that year. It actually was a pretty down year in terms of recruits in Indiana, but Deshaun Thomas was the 3rd highest scorer all-time in the state and was a McDonald’s AA. Terone was also a better recruit than TC.
I dunno how they select
Looking at the NATIONAL POY, the past winners include LBJ, Greg Oden, Brandon Knight, Dwight Howard, Jrue Holiday, Kevin Love – I’d think it is fairly representative of the best high school basketball player, and I’d think that you have to win the state to be considered a national candidate.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatorade_Player_of_the_Year_awards
In any case, it doesn’t really matter what the player won in high school if he doesn’t bring it to college. However, for those who complained about recruiting and that TC is not a D1 talent, that’s just total B.S. and shows either a lack of sports knowledge or a lack of respect (which reflects very negatively to the recruits whom oldBoiler52 said are reading this site).
Carrol might not be a D1 talent but
he is still our best option. Marcius get’s lost too often on the defensive end. Lawson is undersized and a horrible rebounder.
Of course he is D1 talent
Maybe not “elite” D1 talent, but are you seriously telling me that he does not belong on any D1 team? People need to stop saying that our players are not D1 athletes, that is a pretty broad statement. So TC is so bad that he can’t play for a team in the Big Sky Conference or the Mid Continent Conference, give me a break with this.
Well...
Since we have been struggling with the “best” players in the lineup, maybe CMP should put everyone at their natural position as it should be.
TC – C
The Law – PF
Rob – SF
Jackson – PG
Smith – SG
I think that someone else had mentioned this…
TC is not a Center ... he plays face up shooting jumper so more like a stretch 4
Our only true C, unfortunately, is just Sandi.
put in byrd instead of effing Ryne Smith
and I like this lineup

If we put in Hummel and Byrd to defend the perimeter together with LJ
we would probably be in for a disaster…
