+1

TJ should be a key going forward. Lawson, AJ need to play more just to get more experience. In regards to next year, Hammons should be starting after the first few games. Our inside defense is HORRID. Our bigs have no athleticism. How many blow-by layups did IU have, along with put backs?

To your call once more we rally...

by H Dot Jones on Feb 4, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

I have said this so many times this year it is getting ridiculous

You can’t expect a bunch of role players to suddenly contribute so much in one year. I don’t mean to offend a lot of the current players with this comment but only LewJack, Barlow, Hummel, and TJ are playing at a good level every game. Everyone else is hit or miss, and that is a perfect example of a role player. AJ and Lawson don’t have enough experience to put this on their abilities yet.

Going into next year I see Barlow, TJ, and possibly AJ and Lawson being the people from the current roster able to contribute on a good to high level every night. Byrd has flashes, but he is there one game and missing the next. I quite honestly feel like we will be heavily reliant on the 2012 class to be successful next year.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

I'm saying they need to get better in the offseason...

I just don’t know how they will. But yes the players have struggled from being role players to filling into a bigger role…. I dunno. I’ve resigned to the fact we’re looking at an NIT team.. so it’s frustrating…

To your call once more we rally...

by H Dot Jones on Feb 4, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

Same, I don't share the ridiculous optimism of some people here

I knew from the beginning this team would struggle and it would be frustrating to watch. All I had to do was watch games last year and see people stand around as JJ and Moore did all the work.

We are transitioning though. Let’s just be happy football seems to be trending upward and we have some great players coming in over the next two years.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

problem is...

who’s going to stop standing around. Sadly, Marcius and Carroll are busts/liabilities. We can’t win consistently with them being sole post players/starters. Will be interesting to see how Simpson and Hammons will compete. Hale/Lawson/Carroll… have to be a better version of Elston/Pritchard. I’m not sure how they will get that way though… lawson played well honestly. Carroll is just too dang slow… and Hale… he’s probably too weak to bang down low. So I hope he turns out to be poor poor mans DeShaun Thomas.

To your call once more we rally...

by H Dot Jones on Feb 4, 2012 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe our current players....

are sandbagging it so next years group of young recruits can have a better record than this year, causing a massive craze and allowing us to say “We are back!”

Hey we already took it to you in your house!

Haha..

I do think the Bulls are probably better than the Pacers, but not by a whole lot…look at the playoff series last year, and the Pacers have taken a big step forward since then. I think the Pacers are the 3rd best team in the East.

by ruascott on Feb 4, 2012 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

The Bulls had two injured starters last year during the playoffs :P

I really can’t say who is third yet in the East. The Heat and Bulls are 1a and 1b, but after that it is tricky. Not enough games played yet.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

Enough!!!

Take the first half basket down all the way to the floor mounting bolts——-cut all of it up,melt it down and mount the lump of steel in one of the men’s urinals in Mackey. We have already covered the officials of the BIG——-Valentine, Burr and Hightower make up their minds on who is going to win. If you are the ranked team you will get the calls—-all the calls. And last and most painfully; CMP with a week to prepare for this game came up with that first half offense??? CMP’s staff can’t even coach two 6’10" guys to atleast get in the way on defense. The recruiting short fall is the coaching staff. Purdue looked bad in every aspect of this game. Turnovers are low because the tough pass is not attempted———come to think of it the passing is pretty plain/bad. Aw hell this is just a bad year and I hope Rob is not hurt. GOD THAT FELT GOOD!

this is my least favorite to watch. I can’t remember a season that made my blood boil like this one has. It’s so agonizing because I know the potential is there, but for whatever reason they’re unable to achieve consistently. One night they’ll light up the scoreboard, the next they go 21-71. are you serious?

what game were you watching? This game could’ve had an entirely different outcome if had had been officiated fairly. You can point to the final score and say we got blown out, but the reality is if it had been called fair from the start we wouldn’t have had to play from behind, and wouldn’t have had to force so much. Say what you will, you won’t convince me that the officiating didn’t have a MAJOR impact on the outcome of this game.

by AAMB Boiler on Feb 4, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

There were SO SO MANY chances for Purdue to win that game...

To your call once more we rally...

by H Dot Jones on Feb 4, 2012 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

Now I don't deny that at all

Purdue certainly had it’s chances to win this game in spite of the awful calls. I’m just pointing out that had the calls been less one-sided, they wouldn’t have had to mount a second half comeback like they did. The halftime score would’ve been more like a tie instead of an 11 point gap.

by AAMB Boiler on Feb 4, 2012 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

IU is the better team

The refs had nothing to do with this loss. IU has more talented basketball players and it showed. Name one other player on Purdue outside of Hummel that would see playing time on IU?

To your call once more we rally...

by H Dot Jones on Feb 4, 2012 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

by Sportsnut on Feb 4, 2012 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

Jackson is good but

you can defend him if you play 5 feet off and 3 feet to the right of him. I hate Hulls but he can shoot better then Jackson.

by Sportsnut on Feb 4, 2012 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

LewJack

would start for them. IU’s one big hole is their lack of a true PG.

by ruascott on Feb 4, 2012 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

I'm dead fucking serious

What calls can you point to that really changed what the result of the game would have been?

by ruascott on Feb 4, 2012 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

It was pretty much everyones fault

LewJack was 1 of 10. This was a total lack of team effort.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

Look, I HATE blaming the ref

I always believe, especially on the road, you are not gonna get favorable calls. As Painter always says, you have to play 10-15 pts better to ensure a win. No excuse.

And yes, we shot TERRIBLY at FT, shot HORRIBLY in FG, but we were in the game if not of some calls that are head-scratching. TC’s first foul on Zeller? Replay clearly shows it was Zeller bringing down TC. The “blocking foul” on Byrd? Replay against shows that he was outside the box. Also another time Oladipo was driving out of control and lost the ball on his way up – IU ball. I can name a lot more and they were calls when the game was still well within reach.

I understand refs are human and won’t be perfect. I am also well aware of fan bias. That’s why I keep a count on how many times we get lucked out too, and I have maybe once or twice in this game. And we are supposed to be the home team.

In any case, it is true that had we made our FTs, we could have won the game, so I shouldn’t blame the ref. Oh well.

by charlespig on Feb 4, 2012 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

We shot terrible

that is what gave us the loss. The calls wouldn’t have mattered if we even shot 10% better… which isn’t saying much when we barely shot 30%.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I thought it

was Purdue’s game plan to come in and play as physical as possible. It was clear they really wanted to body Zeller and use their fouls against him. The 1st call against Carroll was in my mind a 50/50 call. The first time I saw it I thought it was a good call. When they showed the replay I could see how they were tied up and Zeller pulled him down.

But so what? Do you really think TC playing more minutes would have made a damn bit of difference? I don’t. The Oladipo call was bad. The Byrd blocking call was the right call.

by ruascott on Feb 4, 2012 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

No, it isn't about TC playing more minute

Before you know it, we had 6 team fouls vs 1 for IU. Although, give credit to IU b/c they hit their FTs and we didn’t.

We were down 4 with less than 4 minutes to play. As badly as we were playing and shooting, had a couple of those calls turned in our favor, we could still have led.

But, I do agree that 1) we didn’t shoot well (FG or FT), 2) we didn’t play D (esp in the 2nd half). Had we corrected even one of the two, we could have wont he game and the ref would be a moot point.

by charlespig on Feb 4, 2012 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

Remember when...

the hallmark of a kid that played from an Indiana high school is that they could shoot. We’ve got shooters, we just don’t have any makers. And I thought we were Makers All. I’m telling you what boys and girls, not only is the rest of the year going to be tough to stomach, but unless the freshman next year exceed all expectations, next year ain’t going be much better. So how come Coach Keady can carry a clip board for St. John’s ? I say get him back to West Lafayette.

by buddha58 on Feb 4, 2012 10:13 PM EST reply actions

What shooters?

Hummel and Smith can be considered shooters. Byrd can be considered as a streak shooter. There is not anothe player on our team that can be close to being considered a shooter on any level.

by Sportsnut on Feb 4, 2012 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

I thought AJ had a shot….he’s terribad so far.
TJ has an ugly 3 ball
Barlow can drive

by Boiler219 on Feb 4, 2012 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

AJ and TJ

are extremely undersized at the D1 level and can not shoot from 3 or the free thow line. Barlow can drive and make his layups at a 66% rate but that’s it. Nothing else on offense.

by Sportsnut on Feb 4, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

TJ really isn't undersized

He is built like a tank. AJ is a bit inexperienced; He definitely needs to fill out more though.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

TJ is 6'2" at best and

playing the #3 against guys 6’5" to 6’8" tall. He should be playing the #2 against guys closer to his height so he can take advantage of his strength and power.

AJ will not be successful at the D1 level unless he can shoot something other then his 5’ runners. He was a great high school player but does not have the physcial size and talent to make it happen at this level of competition.

Notice how Painter is now recruiting guard/wings that are 6’5" to 6’7" tall. He has learned from his 2008-2011 recruiting decisions and we will be back in 2 years. I was frustrated with our team but if you think about it, it’s not like we have the talent ande underacheiving. Looking back a the season and our roster, we have really accomplished a lot this year.

by Sportsnut on Feb 4, 2012 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with pretty much everything

I wasn’t really saying TJ is fine for the position he is playing, but he is actually pretty solid for a 2 guard. AJ will need to develop his shot a lot, I agree with that too. Teams with length will simply swat him anytime he drives.

I think a lot of people here had too high of expectations for this team.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

One thing I think next season's team really help

is that we don’t have to play out of position. We don’t need TJ to play #3 or Robbie/Lawson to play #5. When you play your natural position I think it would REALLY help.

by charlespig on Feb 4, 2012 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Couldn't agree more

Players are good playing their position.

by Sportsnut on Feb 5, 2012 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

This team is broke

No identity at all. I’m saying 2-3 years before we contend again and most of these current players are out. Because I don’t know how next years class will gel with the current ones. I think ‘11,’12,’13 will gel very nicely

by Boiler219 on Feb 4, 2012 10:17 PM EST reply actions

biggggggs

Simple their big guys way better than ours. And its not coaching its talent. I’m sorry but TC gave us nothing tnight. Play laswson how much worse could he be. Gonna suck to go to asshall

by clappy the clown on Feb 4, 2012 10:26 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I thought Lawson was doing well.

He is more athletic and stronger than Zeller. I don’t know how many fouls he had or if it was because of the hit to his knee, but I thought he was doing well.

by herby20 on Feb 4, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

TC gave us nothing b/c he was called two quick fouls

First foul, clearly Zeller took him down. Second foul, if the guy wasn’t Cody Zeller it wouldn’t have been called.

by charlespig on Feb 4, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Frustrating Game

Officiating was tough to swallow, but you got shoot better then 20% in half if you expect to compete. Second half was better but then the defense was a tough as it was in the first.

I don’t understand how a team in division never goes to the post. Even for the passing angles, it just doesn’t happen.

Outside of that you could see a difference in the talent in IU last 3 recruiting classes are just better then ours.

Ignorance can be fixed. Stupidity is forever.

not been happy

After a game since at MSU last year. This one is on recruiting misses. Every position we had less talent but hummel on the floor and as we have to hear every game rob is a better complementary player

by clappy the clown on Feb 4, 2012 10:47 PM EST via mobile reply actions

right

remember he was all american candidate several for years. Now he is one of college basketball’s all time best complimentary players.. sad..

by KCBoiler on Feb 4, 2012 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

How are you going to say its all talent....

Look at Butler the last few years. If you don’t’ want a more concrete example that playing hard and good coaching can’t win you games, I don’t know what you want.

by Boiler219 on Feb 4, 2012 11:20 PM EST reply actions

Butler had a lot of talent

They had a flipping lottery pick in GH. Matt Howard was a beast of a big man.

How are they looking this year with those 2 gone?

by ruascott on Feb 4, 2012 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

GH

It’s quite clear GH should never have been a lottery pick. And Howard is playing in Europe.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

He still cashed out at the exact right time

Can you blame him? I’ll take his paycheck the next few years for it.

A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Well yeah, he may be a Rhodes scholar form that choice but Butler did not make their NCAA runs because they had more talent than the teams they beat.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 12:52 AM EST up reply actions

Are you kidding me?

He defended Kobe when they played the Lakers his rookie year. He forced Kobe to go 6-18 with a turnover on the final possession to win the game. He isn’t John Wall good mind you, but Hayward is a great talent and is only going to get better.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

He will never be an all-star.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 12:52 AM EST up reply actions

Right, because only two years in the NBA is so telling.

And being an all-star means you were worthy of a lottery pick. Please, your criticism of NBA players is ridiculous. John Wall and Tyreke Evans aren’t all-stars, so according to you they are wastes of lottery picks too.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 12:57 AM EST up reply actions

Hmm, really?

yes, if you are a lottery pick you should at least be an all-star. GH will never be one.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 1:01 AM EST up reply actions

You realize that there are only about 20 all-stars a season

And there are multiple lottery picks every season, right?. The best players remain all-stars for multiple seasons in a row, so it makes it incredibly hard for new players to become all-stars until those same multi-year all-stars retire.

You don’t need to be an all-star to be worthy of a lottery pick, and thinking you do is just foolish.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

A lottery pick should at least average double figures.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

Well, you can say what you want but it’s my contention that he was drafted way too high simply because Butler went as far as they did. and he has not proven me wrong yet.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 1:09 AM EST up reply actions

And he almost does, he has about a 9.3 or something ppg.

He is playing for an average team and is only in his second year. Now if he still hasn’t done much to increase his production 3 or 4 years from now, you can complain.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

This team goes with the leadership.

Rob Hummel is nowhere near his former self and Lew’s back problems keep him from practicing. There’s a reason we are a bubble team.

by Jackson Brunner on Feb 5, 2012 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

Hummel IS his former self.

Fans seem to have created a Robbie Hummel myth. He was never an incredible scorer who created every one of his shots. That job always belonged to Moore. JJ was the defensive monster (and offensive in his last year). Hummel was the all-around guy who you couldn’t leave open.

He got a lot of looks because Moore and JJ created looks. No one on the team is nearly as much a threat to score as those two were, so now Hummel draws their better defenders and they don’t sag off of him as much.

I love Robbie, but he is trying too hard to carry the team offensively and create every one of his own shots. Unfortunately, the way the rest of the team is playing on offense means he actually does have to.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

Hummel was always streaky – and it was easier to be streaky more often when you had Moore and JJ.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 12:56 AM EST up reply actions

The big thing we missed last year was that when JJ and Smoodge weren’t scoring we had Rob to hit a jumper or two. And he wasn’t afraid to take the shots. Without him, we struggled.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't say we struggled.

Unless you are referring to the VCU game, which Hummel would not have helped there.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

LOL

We struggled to score at numerous points last year. Did you not watch the games?

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

I did.

Do you not realize we were a 3 seed and beat several great teams last year? We obviously would have been better with him, but saying we "struggled’ is ludicrous.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

We did struggle at key times to hit key shots because other teams would focus on stopping JJ and Moore. it was Robbie in previous years that had stepped up in those situations and hit big shots. Without him, we struggled at times to hit big shots.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

Seriously, don’t you remember the 3 by Kramer vs Texas A&M in the NCAA? We had no one else to shoot at that time without Robbie.

by Crunchy on Feb 5, 2012 1:17 AM EST up reply actions

A team with no time to adjust from missing a starter

Is a lot different than a team that played without him the whole season. Purdue did not struggle last season. They had some games were the team collectively shot bad which would not have made a difference if Robbie was there or not.

And the A&M game we struggled because we lacked size and they had a huge front court, not because Robbie wasn’t there to shoot jumpers.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

I see what you're saying, but

IMHO Hummel is not his former self. He has not regained his quickness (yet) and he often does not get enough lift from his legs, which really hurts his shot, especially his pull-up jumper.

And at this point he may lack confidence as well. Call me crazy but I am wondering whether he is worrying too much about his shot. At times it almost seems that his shot looks better when he does not have time to think about it.

by spazio on Feb 5, 2012 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

The last part I kind of mentioned

He probably is worrying about his shot, because he is worrying about having to carry the offense. The rim also seems to be extremely unforgiving in his case as well.

by herby20 on Feb 5, 2012 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

Hummel is the same player as when he left!

He is being asked to play a forward position with absolutely no help down low. He is being asked to be our leading scorer when that is not his natural role. He is being asked to be our leading shot blocker which is crazy. He is being asked to be our best in almost every statistical category which is not fair.

Hummel is a high end complement player. Expectations should be he is 2nd on the team in points, rebounds, blocks, steals, 3-pt shooting, assists, etc…

by Sportsnut on Feb 5, 2012 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Butler put

5 players on the court that were natural at the PG, SG, SF, PF, and C. Purdue runs with 4 SG and 1 PF on the floor. Can’t compare the situations.

by Sportsnut on Feb 5, 2012 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

I am saying of course he is worrying about his shot because there is no one else to step up if he doesn’t. And he wants to win every game. Couldn’t you see it in his eyes when it became apparent that we weren’t gonna win tonight? It kills me to see Robbie go though that but it is what it is.

Though it has been drilled into our heads, and again by Jimmy Jackson tonight, Robbie is a role player. An exceptional role player, but a role player still. And he has always been a steak shooter, it just wasn’t as apparent when JJ and Moore could pick him up.

And it is obvious he hasn’t fully recovered from his injury when he was hobbling around tonight. he has admitted he isn’t fully confident mixing it up around the basket.
