Watched some old school Purdue basketball with my 3 boys tonight...
They are 14, 11, and 10 and although we live in Georgia we get to Mackey for a couple of games a year so they understand.
After the Nebraska win tonight I pulled a videotape out of the closet, yes a videotape, from the 1994 NCAA tournament. Second round, Purdue versus Alabama. Probably the only one I have taped but I suddenly remembered it this morning and decided to try to find it this evening and did.
Big Dog, Ian Stanback, Cuonzo Martin, Herb Dove, Matt Waddell. Anyone remember those names?
Sure was great to see Coach Keady once again stalking the court, Bruce Weber on the bench (with brown hair not silver), and a classic Boilermaker lineup on the floor. I sure wish I would have taped more games back then.

Matt Waddell
Best division 1 player from Tipton, IN of which I can think.
I was 11 years old in 1994
And was just really starting to understand basketball and become a fan of Purdue. Waddell was my favorite player at the time… even more so than Big Dog. Cuonzo, quickly took over that roll though.
Buckeye by birth, but BOILERMAKER by the grace of God!
I was 12...
Waddell came to the D-1 camp I was in a couple years after this to teach some shooting. The guy stood from 5-10’ behind the arc and drained about 5 or 6 in a row. Needless to say, we listened when he taught.
I Remember It Well
I was at that game in Lexington.

I remember Dove's supernasty dunk over Peck-Love (?)
Especially surprising considering how low-key Dove usually was emotionally.
Big Dog had one too I think. Forget on whom.
I also remember how the team had a decisive run where Big Dog actually didn’t score. I really started believing then. In fact, I’d sort of feared getting wiped by Kansas because they were, well, Kansas.
I forget the legality of posting youtube clips, or the ethics of asking on SBNation…but lots of people who didn’t see it would’ve loved it. Even saving one such game is special.
I saw most all of this game as it was nationally televised and the only one at the time, the first of the 2nd round. The one I missed was @Michigan. The end of that one’s on YouTube.

Great Game
at Michigan. Was also at that one as well. Unbelievable finish as Big Dog gets the ball from an outbounds play and clear sails to the hoop for the winning basket. I remember how quiet Crisler was that day as the place was probably 80% full. Students may have been on break I don’t recall.
Herbie Dove was also one of my all-time favorites. Played his role as a defensive stopper to perfection.

Spring Break??
From what I remember, it seems that the end of the Big Ten season for Purdue involved Michigan. Not sure if that is correct- I suppose I could research it- but that seemed to happen multiple years while I was at Purdue.

Oooo...thanks for the memories!
Watched the casual open practice in Rupp on Wednesday, but had to miss the Alabama game for a business trip. Arrived back in Lex on Sat morning just in time to race from the airport to downtown, run to Rupp and climb to my nosebleed seat just in time for the national anthem and a most entertaining beat down of a highly regarded #4 seed Kansas team…and especially that pOSTERizedtag dunk!

ahh yes
I played against Waddell in the 8th grade (he talked some serious trash too lol!!)….he actually went to Western School (Kokomo/Russiaville) and is from Russiaville, not Tipton. He transferred to Tipton his freshman year. His family is well known and respected in western Howard county. He was light years ahead of the rest of his age group. I played for Kokomo (we had three 8th grade teams however) and Western/Waddell smoked us out of the gym. We had to play them twice that day in a round robin tourny. I don’t think a Western 8th grade team has beaten Kokomo since then!!!!
anyhoo, that ’94 team was probably my favorite since I started following them in "78 or so

western 8th grade
My 8th grade team beat Kokomo to win the city county. So it has happened at least one other time haha (I know this because I had a great view from the bench.)
thats hilarious
remember tho, you only beat 1/3rd of the Kokomo “team”

Herb Dove was my favorite player when I was little...
Went to Perry Meridian on the South-Side of Indy
I was a Soph at Southport HS when Perry Meridian opened
Spent my freshman year with those kids – then they got this brand spanking new school with the best of everything.
We kept the tradition, which at the time was pretty strong:
- Jim Krivacs (MVP of the NIT for Univ of Texas)
- Louis Dampier (shared uber-racist Adolph Rupp’s backcourt with Pat Riley on the UK team that lost the ’66 NCAA final to Texas Western.)
BTW – The Southport band was hired to play the “school band” in the movie “Hoosiers”. “Hail to Southport” was an original composition written by SHS’s band director back in the 1930’s or something. The movie producers wanted a unique fight song. If you want to use our song, you have to use our band.
“Hail to Southport” can be found at the end of the music credits a the end of the movie.
Go Cardinals!!
A few years later, one of PM’s hottest babes lived across Lutz Street from me in West Lafayette.
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
Awesome
I have done a lot of sub teaching at Southport in the past.
A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Check the trophy case the next time you're down there.
I was on Southport’s 1976 State Runner-Up Gymnastics team – front row on the right.
No one believes me now – of course I’ve added a few pounds. I need to make sure the proof is still there!
Since you probably know the song, listen for it playing faintly in the background of the halftime locker room scene during the championship game at Hinkle.
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
I remember that lineup well
Being in HS, I didn’t miss too many games back then – esp when the Big Dog and Cuonzo were on the court. What a duo! Those two really tore up the big ten back then. And those games against U of M were epic back then too.
I always thought Stanback looked more like a linebacker than a forward.
>Hoosier by birth, Boilermaker by the grace of God
>Don't cry, MSU - It's just a game...
I wish I had a way to get this from VHS to digital and then TMill could post it if that is legal.
I don’t have the entire game but I do have part of the first half, the halftime show, and the entire second half. Dove’s dunk over Peck-Love in the second half that Beavis Beefcake mentioned was awesome.
IU Sucks.
only thing better was
Watching lewis mitchell stephes mccants. I cried myself to sleep in 5th grade after k state

I was in 8th, same thing
Probably would’ve if I were older too.
I never got to watch em much besides the two games against UM (another exciting win at Crisler—91 to 87) and the home game vs iu.
http://articles.latimes.com/1988-02-08/sports/sp-27837_1_big-ten-championship for the game @UM. It was a nice change from the 104-68 loss the year before that cost me a public titty-twister in gym class. No revenge for me—the guy was taller.

Yep- 7th for me
It was great seeing them out on the court at the IU game. The rivalry was GREAT back then! Glad to see Kendall is being influenced by the Three Amigos to hate IU, just as the rivalry will be heating up…
I was 6
It’s my first Purdue basketball memory. Fitting, somehow.

That was a fun team to watch..........
I miss seeing Cuonzo run down the sidecourt after nailing a three, tongue hanging out and pointing up to the crowd.
Awesome.
Close by the Wabash, In famed Hoosier land, Stands old Purdue, Serene and Grand, Cherished in Memory,By all her sons and daughters true, Fair Alma Mater, All Hail Purdue
I remember that one well. Great game!
Presented by Raycom, I had forgotten all about Raycom.
