Pretty good recruiting situation

We find ourselves in a pretty good recruiting situation I feel like. First let's look at some of the facts:

  • We have locked up a lot of high major talent for the 2012 and 2013 classes.
  • The guys we have locked up seem to have really bought in to the "Purdue system".

Now this will help us out dramatically in recruiting in a variety of ways I think as the program goes forward. How I think it will help:

  1. Painter only has to recruit players for one class, 2014, rather than try and plug holes in a variety of classes.
  2. Our 2012 and 2013 classes seem to have guys with likable personalities. In essence, instead of just the coaches recruiting, we now have 7 more guys putting in a good word for our program.
  3. I think players want to play with other guys they know so this is becoming a big deal in the world of recruiting. If you need an example just look at Zeller and Indiana Elite. The sooner we say who will be here, the sooner their AAU buddies will start to consider us.
  4. We know what type of players we will "need". More than likely big bodies to complement the wings from 2013.
  5. Time. We have plenty of time so Painter has the chance to be the first person in these 2014 guys' ears. We won't get all of them, but we are a program desperate for that one player to push us over the top.

Is CMP still trying for a big for 2013?

I think point #3 might be the biggest. From what you have posted, it sounds like Stephens is helping to get some of the ILL boys here.

When do you think the first 2014 might commit? 2013 seemed to commit pretty early, wondering if 2014 might as well or if it was just a “fad”.

All of your

Points are correct. But the fact kids recruit kids is spot on. All 7 will come in and play . Jay Simpson had a monster game last night on the defensive side he also had 11 points and 9 boards . Kendall is all about Purdue and will be special . But Bryson is the one who will make everyone else better.

by oldboiler52 on Feb 12, 2012 4:32 PM EST reply actions

Oldboiler52, you have seen Simpson play many times and think highly of him.

Does he have the ability to come in and play 20+ minutes per game next year? If no one transfers, we will have 6 players that fit the description of PF or C and only 80 minutes to split up.

by Sportsnut on Feb 12, 2012 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

no

he’s the top candidate to red shirt next year and Painter always seems to use that red shirt.

I disagree

I expect someone to transfer. Maybe that isn’t fair to predict, but from what I’ve heard Hale is doing really really well in practice, and Hammons is going to take minutes. Lawson might transfer to go closer to home and Sandi could transfer to get minutes as well. If that occurs, I think Simpson will play.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 12, 2012 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

if there is roster volatility he’ll definitely play, but still not 20 minutes a game (which is a lot of minutes). He isn’t going to take too many minutes from junior Travis Carroll. If the roster stays in place, I think he red shirts.

Carroll

Unless he improves, I don’t see him factoring too much into the rotation next year. Simpson is bigger, more athletic, and probably a better defender. I get why someone thinks a Junior will play over the Freshman, but Painter has never been one to let that be the only reason someone plays and I think Simpson will be better across the board.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 12, 2012 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

Travis Carroll at the 4 (where he belongs)

is double the player he is at the 5

by JustAJ on Feb 12, 2012 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

Agree to disagree

I get what you are saying, but those are just numbers. I have seen Carroll play BASKETBALL and he is going to be a solid option when it comes to giving 5-10 solid minutes off the bench.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 12, 2012 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

Agree he is not fit as a 5

But unfortunately I think his minutes will come from playing at the 5. We already have Hale, Lawson (and potentially Simpson) at the 4. Sandi doesn’t seem to be able to get minutes and as a frosh Hammons won’t play more than 30 mins (I think Zeller only played 28 mins, right?), so who else besides TC gonna play the 5?

by charlespig on Feb 13, 2012 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

I'd guess Chooch and Hammons split the load at the 5 for the most part

Carroll, Hale and Lawson play the four (in that order) and Simpson red shirts. My guess is there will be points when Painter goes small that Hammons and Chooch both ride the pine for extended length of time and Carroll and Hale get the playing time benefits. Depending on the opponent. I still think Lawson is a non-conference schedule away from being a big impact player. Has the tools and athleticism, but still seems to lose himself out there. Carroll is always in a position to make plays, he just can’t against B1G 5s.

by JustAJ on Feb 13, 2012 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

Good Analysis

I think it would be a good thing if we were able to red-shirt Simpson. I still feel like Chooch has the tools to become an efficient player, but it remains to be seen if he can grasp the mental portion. Spot on about Lawson and Carroll. Too bad we can’t combine Carrol’s fundamentals with Lawson’s athleticism.

by Boiler17 on Feb 13, 2012 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

One of my friend's brother is friends with Sandi

He seems to like it here alot, plus he’s doing pretty well in Chemical Engineering.. I doubt he transfers

by boilergt on Feb 12, 2012 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Lawson better not transfer

I think he will fit so well with the ’12 ’13 classes. We NEED athleticism to compete

by BoilerPackerCub on Feb 12, 2012 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see the huge upside on Lawson

1) He has no shooting skills AT ALL
2) He has absolutely no rebounding instincts. It’s actually impressive how few defensive rebounds he grabs.
3) He has horrible hands
4) He doesn’t have great size

by Sportsnut on Feb 12, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

He is a freakish athlete and kind of being forced to play the 5.

He is also coming off of an achilles injury. I think we aren’t using him to our full advantage either. He is good in the fast-paced transition game. And even though Purdue does much better when we do exactly that, we seem stuck on this notion of setting up the half-court offense every possession.

by herby20 on Feb 12, 2012 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

Funny

…how Jacob Lawson can go from second-coming of JJ (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/995606-purdue-basketball-jacob-lawson-has-emerged-as-the-future-star-of-purdue) to no upside at all.

I personally think the jury is still out on Lawson. He is a thin 6’6 trying to play the #5 in B1G while recovering from an achilles injury last year.

by charlespig on Feb 13, 2012 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

I'd say this has a lot to do with it

the athleticism is there, but he still needs to learn to play within his body and within a system.

-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.

by JustAJ on Feb 13, 2012 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

Yes

He can play 20 but thats about it . He is such a big body he seems to tire out a bit. I really like Jay he is so mobile and a great passer with good hands. Forget the rankings its about how he fits and he fits . But from what I have been hearing Hale is leaps and bounds ahead of our other bigs . If this true then Jay will have to step up to get minutes . AS for the others I will take Jay . Playing with Davis this year has forced him to play harder he and Ray tweet going to the gym get in extra work several times per week . When I talked with Jay he said Lalu was what he needed to just work on his game . Lalu for the last few games have been using him at the five . I don’t know why but he is better facing the basket than in the post.

Should Basil go to LaLu too next year?

Sounds like his current coach aren’t using him much

by charlespig on Feb 12, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

I think he definitely should

Though he would have three coaches in three years. But he isn’t going to develop well if he gets no play time from a coach who wants every person playing every night. He also isn’t gonna develop much if they have a 6’5"ish player (aka Basil) playing the 5 either.

by herby20 on Feb 12, 2012 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

I love the fit of everyone

I really like our recruiting far more than i did when we were getting guys like Barlow, Carroll, Lawson, Marcius, and Hart. I get you never want to have scholarships not being used because in practice you don’t have the bodies you need, but everyone from 2012 and 2013 are going to be pretty good. Smotherman needs to improve, but I think in AAU we will be able to more accurately judge him because he won’t be forced to play out of position. 2014 could make or break us in terms of being a national powerhouse for years to come. I know that is a lot of pressure and hope to put on one class, but the people that will be in place before them are going to push us towards the top, and so it will fall on the 2014 class to push us over it.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 12, 2012 5:47 PM EST reply actions

I think 2015 will matter more.

We will need a great class to replace the production of the ’12 class. That will be their last year, so you want to bring in a bunch of great guys to replace their minutes the following year.

by herby20 on Feb 12, 2012 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

2015

Will replace the freshman class this year.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 12, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

That is why I said it will be important

for them to replace the 2012 class’ minutes the following year. The 2014 class, unless we bring in some absolute studs, will not see much play time. The 2015 class can potentially be the ones stepping up to replace what the 2012 class was giving and take over after the 2013 class leaves.

by herby20 on Feb 12, 2012 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

We need at least one 2014 to be a STUD. That is what will take us to the next level. Not another really good class. We need a great player to go with our really good ones to take us to another level.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 12, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

you need to out of the sheer fact that the state of Indiana is loaded in 2014

gotta bring some of those kids on just for future recruiting’s sake. Can’t go 0-fer in 2014, just like you can’t go 0-fer with the 2012 class.

-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.

by JustAJ on Feb 13, 2012 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

2014 - Indiana

Who are the top talents in the state for 2014? By this time last year we had all of the ’13 kids verballed. It does seem like Painter could be in a good position to land another strong class. Hopefully we can make ’14 count.

by Boiler17 on Feb 13, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

I'd say the top 10 for 2014 in order to date would be

Trey Lyles – Indy (Hoosier commit)
JaQuan Lyle – Evansville
James Blackmon – Ft. Wayne (Hoosier commit, just tore ACL and may fall)
Trevon Blueitt – Indy
Sean Sellers – Greensburg
Tyler Wideman – Merrillville -ish
Perry Poindexter – Indy
PJ Thompson – Indy
Bryant McIntosh – Greensburg
Jermie Tyler – Indy

All ten of those kids are likely to end up in Rivals top 150 when they rank the full class at the end of this coming summer.

-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.

by JustAJ on Feb 13, 2012 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

actually that may be even a little outdated

as Ernie Duncan – Evansville (UE commit)
Johnnie Vasar – LaLu (not sure where he transferred to)
Grant Evans – Wapahani
Troy Spears – Park Tudor (New Mexico commit)

have all come on very strong in their school seasons. In fact I would probably put all four of them right behind Wideman and in front of Poindexter in that order. The point being that 2014 is stacked and has a legit 12-16 players that could be major recruits depending on whether they reach their potential or not.

-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.

by JustAJ on Feb 13, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks

That’s alot of talent. I’ve heard Lyle is probably an out of state recruit (OSU) and I know Painter is going hard after Wideman. Anyone else Purdue is looking at?

by Boiler17 on Feb 13, 2012 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Grant Evans

He is from my area of Muncie. The kid is a STUD. I hope he goes to BSU though. They could use a local guy, and his game is going to only be that of a Major program contributor or a mid-major stud.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 13, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

I've been on the Grant Evans bandwagon for about a month or so now

huge fan and would love to see him in Crimson and Cream.

-Contributing Writer at The Crimson Quarry.

by JustAJ on Feb 13, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

Wow

That seems correct to me all though the top three could be in any order . Blackmon jr that was a bad break great kid and great talent. Bryson tweeted he could be out 15-18 months. Mcintosh went to Michigan and seems to be a lock with them. Vasar is another DSR and will have to go out of state. I would put Wilkins in that list also because of his size but towards the end for now.

by oldboiler52 on Feb 13, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

In good position

I think Purdue has a solid shot at landing some of these top in state guys for 2014. By my count we will have 3 (?) openings for ’14.

I’d personally like to see Tyler Wideman (hopefully he grows to 6’10" +), Trevon Blueitt, and after that I’d take Sellers, Evans, Poindexter, or one of the out of state guys we are targeting.

2014 and 2015 are going to be big years for recruiting if Purdue wants to remain as a top tier B1G team.

Blueitt is going to be an under the radar mega prospect

not quite up to the Trey Burke rated 142 now competing for Frosh of Year prospect, but rated 142 best sixth man in conference as freshman type.

Just out of curiousity, what is IU’s 2014 looking like. I know they have the 2 commits, but is there any more available scholarship spots? Any guys on that list feel like an IU lean to you? Just wondering.

by OldSchoolStyle on Feb 13, 2012 2:06 PM EST reply actions

IU will likely add 2 more to Trey Lyles and James Blackmon

Just having those two right there makes it a top 10 class. Lyles will be a top 10 and Blackmon a top 30. Lyles has been getting a lot of national comparisons to Tim Duncan. Now obviously he’s only a sophomore but a sophomore that regularly puts up 25+ points and 13+ rebounds. Blackmon is a prolific scorer but still has points in his game that need work. He’ll fall in the rankings though, because he won’t be seen this summer evaluation session until likely July.

I’d say there aren’t any other IU leans at the moment that are out there and obvious. Cliff Alexander, Trevon Blueitt and Grant Evans will probably be the top targets in the region for the Hoosiers and probably at the top of my personal wishlist as well. I really like Evans and he is the best shooter in that class (as of today). Blueitt won’t wow you with his athleticism but he just gets it done. Really a lot like Christian Watford or Robbie Hummel in that manner. Not going to do anything that makes your eyes bulge and say that was amazing, but at the end of the night he’ll have a double-double. Cliff Alexander is just an aircraft carrier in the lane. No such thing in too many of those type of players on a roster.

I forgot to add a point

It just occured to me that I had another point I was going to make but forgot to, and I have forgotten until today because of some other comments that were made. Anyway, another big big point that should not be overlooked is it feels like we are recruiting a lot in the region and Northern Illinois. I know I mentioned that our recruits now have been plugging the program to their AAU friends which is SOOOOO valuable, but I think what goes along with that is Weber is probably on his way out. Stephens has been in the ear of his Wolves teammates and the parting of Weber with Illinois could go hand in hand with us grabbing some studs in their back yard.
