New Basketball Ranking System From ESPN
They call it the BPI - Basketball Power Index. Seems like they've applied things they like about other ranking systems (Sagarin, Kenpom, RPI, etc) out there and made their own.

Wanting to see/hear how everyone feels about it. I know how I feel about it with iu being a generous #14. They have us at 55, just ahead of Iona, and 5+ behind Illinois, Minnesota, and Northwestern

Looks about right to me
An espn poll with all the teams they slurp right up top. I’m actually surprised iu is as low as they are. We beat minnesota and northwestern on their court and beat the hell out of illinois, but we are ranked behind all three? espn nailed it again, I’m surprised the SEC isn’t ranked 1-14, or is that just in football?
Basketball rankings never work that way.
It’s what have you done for me lately. If they took who beat who into account for every team, the rankings would be impossible to be accurate. FSU beat Duke on their court, but they’re still ranked behind them in all the polls.
It looks like a better indicator then the RPI but
the diminishing returns for blowouts and scoring margin doesn’t always tell the the story. Exampe for us is we lost to Indiana by 17 but the game was much closer. Reading the description, it appears we would be around 30 if we could have converted 2 of our close losses into a win against a ranked or really higher BPI or RPI team.
The only thing I don’t like is they are measure an average over the entire season. Teams get hot and cool off. When selecting tournament teams, a team peaking later in the season is more valuable then a team that peaked too early and is struggling at the end of the season. I would like to see a weighted scoring of how the team is playing in their last 6 games.

Dead.
Hookers.
if they don’t account for that, then it’s worthless. No way they can accurately rank programs like OSU and Miami
>Hoosier by birth, Boilermaker by the grace of God
>Don't cry, MSU - It's just a game...
This means about as much to me
as the NFL QB rating stat… absolutely worthless. I try to stay away from ESPN as much as possible outside of actual games. The talking heads are getting worse by the week and I absolutely detest how they all but suck off certain schools (Duke, NC, UK, IU, OSU, Cuse, UConn, ND, etc).
Buckeye by birth, but BOILERMAKER by the grace of God!
Pretty much all media does that.
Really, how can you blame them? What is the common theme among all of those schools? They have the biggest fan bases. Why not appeal to them? You try to have a successful sports outlet and cover all schools equally. It won’t work. Do you really think the producers of the shows care that much about all of those schools? No, they care about the money that all of those schools bring to their business. ESPN is going to make a big deal out of what will get the most attention, however annoying it may be.
