Simpson Grabs 10 boards More Recruits
Jay Simpson had 10 rebounds playing limited minutes in a blowout win over Gary Lew Wallace 83-51. Jay also made Scouts top 100 this week joining Aj,Ronnie and Rapheal as all 4 recruits are in the top 100. Rapheal also played limited minutes in the win scoring 27 with 4 boards,4 steals and 4 assist. Kendall had a bit of a off game for him scoring 18 as his team won 66-55. After we had 19 rebounds as a team Jay's 10 gets me the most pumped . Consider the fact that Perea at 6'9 and Aget at 7'0 combined for 11. Jay is Lalu's leading rebounder is saying alot. No redshirt here !

Bryson
Bryson’s team played a tough Columbia City team last night and won 70-56. Typical game for Bryson, went for 28 points, not sure of the rest of the stats as of yet. Also a quick note, Painter was at the game to watch him. A friend talked to Painter for just a little bit and said Painter is really excited for Bryson to get to campus and thinks he is “great”.
OLDBOILER52...
…offered Brenton a scholarship at halftime. Painter revoked it between the 3rd and 4th qtrs.
just don't see Brenton being an impact player at the B1G level
would be a very good mid-major guy, don’t think Purdue burns an oversign on him. Hard nosed and scrappy but lacks the explosiveness of his brother to be the scorer at the next level that he is in high school. Also hear his decision making is suspect. Would be a good kid to have to supplement a recruiting class in a rebuilding sense, but probably not in the context that Purdue would bring in the 2013 class.
To put it this way, Purdue would have loved him in the 08, 09 or the 14 class. But not in the class that he is in. He’s a supplemental player that you bring in on the recruiting off years.

Webber and Donavan don't agree
Brenton went to Florida on an officail visit he hasn’t been offered yet. Weber has asked him to visit as has Michigan and Xavier. I would say he is more than a mid major but I respect your opinion.
What is a recruiting off year? Can u pls elaborate?
He’s a supplemental player that you bring in on the recruiting off years.
Is this something you know in advance? (For example, b/c there is a very strong class coming in, the next class is expected to be “off”?) Or, it is only a recruiting off year if all the great players you are going after commit elsewhere? (which in Purdue case, it has been like that for the last 4 yrs)
I would suspect the latter
An off year would be when you have put a great deal of time and resources into a select few recruits, then some or all of them commit elsewhere. Thus you are forced to quickly scramble to fill in your holes.
like after an 07
when you know the class is going to be strong prominent players that are going to be around for several years. You don’t need world beaters in that class. You take the high level supplemental talent. 2013 is an off year for IU and they’re going to bring in three very solid 4 year players that will never have to put the team on their shoulders and go.
Off years, by my definition, are years that you’re looking to fill around top talent instead of bringing in similar top talent to battle against what you have. 2012 is an on year for IU, 2013 is an off year. They’re bringing in the sand to fill in the spaces between the rocks of 2012.

Why do you need an off year though?
Aren’t O$U, Duke, and the likes never get an off year? (I intentionally leave out UK b/c they operate in a different model)
Duke 2009 is an off year?!?
According to ESPN, they have 4 recruits, one is rated a 98 and the other 97, and both are 6’10 or above. That would be a GRRRRREAT year for Purdue!
Also, I still don’t follow your logic. Why is it has to be on-or-off? Can’t you have a balanced class year after year in which not EVERYONE is a 4 or 5-star, but some are blue chips and some are projects (or role players)? I just don’t understand why you say Brenton is good for an “off year”. If he is good enough to play for Purdue, any year is good (provided that we have a scholarship to give); if he is not good enough to play, any year is bad.
Also, what happened in 2009 for the B1G?
Only Indiana (#12) and Illinois (#23) made it to the Top 25 in terms of recruiting class. That’s incredibly poor for a major basketball conference. Too bad Purdue doesn’t seem to take advantage on the “off” year of MSU and O$U.
You need an off year
Because top recruits don’t want to be buried on the depth chart for a year or more.
I still don't see the "need" part
Need – my understanding is like we “need” oxygen, we “need” food, a basketball team “needs” a coach. These are needs.
Off year in recruiting, if possible, is not needed but to be avoided. Who doesn’t want a stable of good players coming in year-in and year-out? Why do we “need” an off year? Sure, I understand top recruits don’t wanna be buried on the depth chart, but say we got a blue chip big man this year, can’t we go get a blue chip guard next year? (Obviously, in Purdue’s case, we never get any blue chip player…)
I think you are thinking too small in this case.
Just because a player is a blue-chip recruit does not mean they are going to get tons of playing time. Terone was a pretty highly rated recruit, but he still didn’t get much time because Moore was in the lineup as well as some upper classmen. AJ was higher ranked than Smith, yet Smith gets more playing time.
If you can get blue-chip recruits every year at multiple positions, go for it. There are few, and I do mean few, schools that can do that. Kids don’t want to ride the bench for a whole season or more. That is why a lot of places have classes that are good but not great to supplement those great classes with role players or areas you need some more depth. Those kind of kids are fine with playing a moderate role for the team.
Didn't get updated
Sorry but I didn’t get updated in time for Bryson he 28 with 9 boards and 5 assist.
Redshirt; probably not, but it’s too early to say he’s gonna make a difference on the boards. Especially in the B10
Granted, but consider that rebounding is the one skill that transfers best from level to level.
"Hey Jay, what time is it?"
"9:30"
"AND IU STILL SUCKS!"

Redshirt, probably yes
Considering as a high school senior TC won the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Indiana (the same award that Tyler and Cody won too) and he was a red-shirt candidate if not b/c Robbie pulled his ACL, I say chances are high that Jay is red-shirt b/c he will be competing minutes with Hale, Lawson, Byrd/TC at the 4.
Unfortunately, he is like Flash
You only see glimpse of him every now and then for 5 seconds or so when he crashes the board from nowhere or knock down a long jumper. And then you don’t see him.
He does have a tendancy to do that.
Especially the part where he comes flying out of no where to get a rebound.
Just Me saying it !
I have no facts just me saying it doesn’t mean anything but what if someone was leaving the team ? And Painter knows it. Maybe he was taking another look at Brenton . Jay redshirting won’t happen. More pluasable he comes in and plays the most minutes at the 4.I see him and Hale at the 4. Lawson has no outside shot. I like the kid but he needs to change his game to play the 4 in our motion offense. Change is coming count on it. You have to be able to shoot from the outside, pass and dribble at the 4. Simpson and Hale can do this Carrol and Lawson cannot. Byrd will play the 3. Your players have to adapt to the system think about it Charles. Hammons and Simpson 6’10 and 7’0 both block shots and rebound and Donnie Hale is most like Hummel.Jay has been playing the 3 he handles the ball well switches on defense and has an outside shot.Just me saying it but I might be right. Theres a first time for everything.
Honestly, I hope you are right
It means we are LOADED in the frontcourt, which is a luxury we never seem to have. I have no favorites (OK, maybe I slightly, very slightly want Hale to be the breakout player after all the stuff he has to go through and staying loyal to the program), but just may the best man wins the job. If anything,it helps that one player’s injury (Hummel) or transfer (Martin) or foul trouble won’t derail a championship run if we have depth.
You probably see the glass half full and I see half empty. I am always skeptical with high school players, no matter how great they look in H.S. (e.g. TC is the Gatorade POY for Indiana as a senior, a fact that I just find out and couldn’t believe it at all), they can still struggle mightily in college. So I don’t want to get overly excited about a H.S. player until I see him play wearing a Purdue uniform. But given that you see them in person, you probably know better than me and I sincerely hope you are right.
The one great thing is, I think we no longer need players to play out of position, and that should REALLY help. I mean, Hummel is not a 5, but he is forced to play there. Lawson is a 6’6 frosh and not a 5, but he is forced to play there. Byrd was a guard but forced to play the 4. Sure, we have to do that for the team, but it really makes it much more difficult for the players to be effective when they are playing in a position that is not fit for them.
Jacob Lawson
has been puzzling me lately. I can remember watching videos of him playing high school ball and drooling. Problem is, i forgot it was high school ball. He is a high flier, but it’s not as easy to fly in the B10. People are saying he is 6’6" at best when I was lead to believe he was 6’8". Where does he fit into Painter’s plan? How are we going to develop this athlete into the best college bball player he can be? Oldboiler, are you saying you think he’s leaving after this year but just don’t want to say it? Blink twice if you think he is leaving.
Your post is right on
1. High school ball is a lot different than B1G ball. Guys who shine in H.S. can struggle mightily in college. (Again, just remember that TC is the Gatorade POY in IN)
2. I like Lawson. Painter said he wants Lawson to play reckless, to RRD (run, rebound, and defend), and I’ll add another d (dunk) too.
3. I am concerned about Lawson leaving b/c frosh usually have the toughest time to adjust (understandably), especially for out-of-state kids. Even LewJack seriously considered leaving, and that was after he was named in the All-B1G frosh team. And we all know about the Traitor after his frosh season, and he was even in-state.
4. I almost got crucified for repeating an observation that some open-thread folks had on Lawson’s body language after Rob’s GW shot. He sat there motionless with no excitement. Others have said he looked fine after the game (which I am glad to hear).
5. Bottom line, I am concerned but I would think (maybe wishful-thinkingly) that Lawson would remain a Boiler. I like him and I’d like to see him making bigger progress. He can be Dallas Lauderdale and make his contribution in RRDD and I’ll be happy.
I don'i Know
But he needs to change his game to play the 4. Carrol is getting better every game as is Terone and AJ. Painter said that he isn’t going to play players to keep them happy. He wants a 7 or 8 player rotation the rest of the year. But I’ll blink once.
Now you're talking
From the updates and clips of Simpson, it appears he has better size, hands, shooting, and ball handling skills then Carrol/Lawson/Marcius. Those are traits that are driven mostly by talent and physcial limitations which is something players can’t learn.. maybe show incremental improvements. If Simpson can be effective in Painters defense, he has an upper hand on Carrol/Lawson/Marcius as they add little value in the motion offense.
