The Boilers are apparently not completely satisfied with stopping at just 3 players in the 2013 class and are reportedly branching out to give 2013 SG Darryl Baker out of Jeffersonville, IN a look. I'm not sure whether to classify him as a SG or PG but I think I'd settle on SG. Certainly he handles the ball a majority of the time for his Jeff High team but his skill set probably falls more in the category of a wing.
Baker is very good at the drive and kick aspect of basketball. He's super aggressive at getting into the lane and kicking it our to open teammates on the perimeter. That being said he's also great at using his body to absorb contact and get to the rim. Baker went toe to toe with likely McDonald's All-American JaQuan Lyle earlier this year and they defended each other. Reports were that it was an impressive display of punch after punch with neither playing backing down. Baker's Jeffersonville squad knocked off Lyle's Bosse with a jumper with two seconds left from Darryl. Baker finished with 39 pts and 12 rebounds while Lyle also went big for 27pts, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.
Baker's biggest weakness is likely his shooting. Certainly he can knock down pretty much anything if wide open but he struggles with consistency when his shot is contested. Not having seen him live for more than about 10 minutes I can't comment to the truth of this, but ESPN tells me that he gets himself into trouble because of his lack of a jump stop. He gets into the lane but gives up possessions with charging calls. If he can develop a consistent pull up jumper he could be that much more dangerous from the field.
As things stand his recruitment is a little uncertain. Purdue is relatively new to the game and some other strong regional programs have come calling as well. For a time IU was interested before they filled up. Now the main competition appears to be Butler, Xavier and Cincinnati.
