Lately I've been reading some of the articles and blogs about us firing Danny Hope. And the general consensus I get from almost every article/commenter, that isn't a Purdue fan or have much in depth knowledge about our program, thinks we made a mistake firing Hope, and that our expectations were way to high. I honestly don't get how people can think our program is that bad, that we should be grateful to have a 6-6 coach that only beats B1G teams with losing records, FCS, and MAC teams. Most of them just look at the fact the we upset OSU a couple times, went to a bowl(in Detroit), and just assume that we have way to high of expectations for our program to fire a coach after he just recently took us to another bowl game. The fact the people would even think 6-6 is pretty good for us, is exactly why we did need change.
Nobody thinks of Purdue as being a decent football school really at all anymore( not saying we were ever a world beater, but we were respectable). Our days of excellent QB play have been over and long forgotten by everyone but PU fans. It's time our new coach restored some pride to our program and made us relevant again. Even IU has been putting together a pretty decent recruiting class and has shown improvement in their program, when they are statistically one of the worst FB programs of all time. We have sustained periods of success, and there's no reason we can't do that again. I applaud most of our fan base for not accepting the kind of results Hope has delivered. I don't know any fan that expects us to be even annual B1G contenders, we just want competency. I personally would be fine just as long as we don't embarrass ourselves every week and we can put together some decent records here and there.
I know it doesn't matter what other people think and for the most part I don't care because a lot seem to have almost no knowledge of our past success, or the real reasons behind Hope being fired, and it wasn't because he didn't take us to the Rose Bowl every year. Attendance was on a steep decline and we were consistently getting blown out. I'm done ranting now, I just thought it was interesting what most people on the outside seem to think about our football situation, and this was for anyone else who might be reading that thinks Purdue has delusional fans that expect to much.
