Dan Dakich... a hate week special

We've been treated to some stellar commentary from Mr. Dakich at a few of our recent games, which has really helped open my eyes to his true genius. Being IU hate week and all, I thought why not have a hate profile of one the IU alums I hate the most.

How do I hate you Mr. Dakich? Let me count the ways. Be it your condescending opinions, your ignorant observations, or your biased comments, you are a complete package of ass. You played for Indiana, but despite my most sincere attempt to find any statistics from your career, the only record I can find of your playing days is the fact that you barfed when you found out you had to guard Jordan. (Okay, I tried for about 10 minutes, which is probably 9 more than I should have wasted) Your coaching record? You were an assistant under Bobby Knight, one of the greatest coaches ever to live. Instead of learning anything however, you seem to have crafted a knowledge of basketball from "Coaching College Basketball for Dummies". Scratch that. Make that the Cliff's Notes of "Coaching College Basketball for Dummies". If one is to gaze upon the crap-heap that is your list of accomplishments, one will note that nearly all of it comes from your time in the shadows as an assitant. Your big break came in 1997, when you stepped up to become head coach of the Bowling Green Falcons. Your 10 seasons there are a testament to the coaching genius you profess from the commentator's seat: 156-140, 89-89 in the MAC. Wow. Your record is comparable to that of such coaching legends as.... oh wait. That's right, .500 in the MAC is pitiful. Perhaps even more astonishing is your list of postseason accomplishments. In your 10 seasons at Bowling Green, you managed an incredible 2 appearances in the prestigious NIT tournament, where you were promptly dismissed in the first round on both occasions. Bravo good sir. In fact, your only accolade from your coaching career seems to be making the list of 50 sexiest coaches. I'm not sure how that happened, either someone has a very skewed perception of the word "sexy", or you did some favors that are probably best left undiscussed. However I believe your greatest act of coaching excellence occured on February 13, 2007, when you led your team to victory, only to lose the game in the showers.

All joking aside, Dakich is that certain type of bastard with a ridiculously inflated sense of self worth and accomplishment despite having done nothing worthy of admiration. (Okay, he probably gave some money to a charity or held a camp for at-risk youths, but you know what I mean.) He speaks with the authority of a great coach with an extensive knowledge of the game, but when you look at his life's accomplishments, it's plain to see that it's all bravado. If he was even half as great as he thinks he is, he'd be coaching a top tier collegiate program, if not the NBA. But no, all he can do is sit on the sidelines and ridicule the decisions of REAL coaches, just like every other fan. The only difference is that someone in their infinite wisdom decided to give Dakich a microphone.

He is the duke of dumbasses, the sultan of simpletons, the lord of losers, and I don't like him.

Got a beef with Dakich? Let the hate flow.

Can't Stand Him

You posted with me on another thread here on H&R. I can’t stand listening to him…Give me Jimmy Jackson any day of the week over Dan Dakich on the BigTenNetwork. I don’t care that he went to IU or any of that…but he comes off as if he’s the smartest basketball mind ever. Always questioning a coaches call or saying something that the coach should do. Thankfully I didn’t have to listen to him during the NU game cause I was there…but I watched a replay of the game and he said that Hummel needed to get out of the corner, then 1 second later, Hummel buried a three from that very spot. I like guys that give their opinion, but this guys is way too much.

by this logic

you have zero right to criticize Dan Dakich because you’ve never coached anyone before. I hate when people discredit individuals for this line of logic. So he wasn’t a successful college coach, that doesn’t invalidate his opinion. If it did then it sure as hell invalidates everyone’s opinion on here.

If we go by your line of logic on why Dakich should shut the hell up then the blogosphere would/should be a barren wasteland. Hate on the dude’s opinions for being incorrect or inaccurate but don’t hate on the dude’s opinions as being unqualified. He is infinitely more qualified to be discussing college basketball than you or me. So if you use his resume to call him an idiot, you’re calling everyone else’s opinion worthless as well.

You assume I've never coached

Perhaps I’m actually Gene Keady trolling around on blogs in my retirement? Hmm? What about that?

No, you’re right. I’ve never coached a darn thing. I do however like to write sarcastic satire, and in the vein of hate week, couldn’t resist the opportunity to combine my sincere dislike of Dakich with a bit of hate week humor. (Hence the inclusion of the 50 sexiest coaches, and general dripping with sarcasm tone).

But hey, if my humor is getting an IU fan worked up (can’t tell if you’re sincerely pissed or not though), that’s what hate week is all about right? Stirring up a little rivalry? I think I succeeded already.

not getting me worked up

just a general bothersome piece of logic that a lot of fans employ. My biggest pet peeve is when people discredit Jim Caldwell because he had a terrible head coaching career at Wake Forest. Can’t call someone an idiot when they scored higher on the SATs than you. Know what I’m saying?

of course you can still say he's not a very good head coach

but it doesn’t invalidate his know-how of the sport in general

I've been impressed with Dakich's interviews FWIW

I may be reading some gladhanding and bandwagoning into it at times but maybe that’s just the enthusiasm a radio announcer needs—and I’d find it to be something else from a former Purdue assistant/head coach.

An example of what you state on the Purdue side would be Jim Colletto. Smart x’s and o’s man, never quite managed to teach it.

by Beavis Beefcake on Jan 30, 2012 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

One certainly can. Many people do.

It doesn’t get them any brownie points, of course.

Some people love to sit and snipe and say “How could someone THAT smart be THAT dumb” on general principles, or comparing different types of intelligence.

I dislike comparisons between who is dumb and smart and feel fully justified ever since I read about 9 types of intelligence. Yeah, it’s even more complicated than that—but as someone who can do a good bit of math in my head and who needs extra time to process obvious emotional cues, I can see both sides of it. And I see why people like to show off what they know. And yeah, I’ve had to learn to deal with “How’d you miss obvious bit X?” at work.

I think both the Purdue and IU fans understand this.

Correct

I have a modicum of intelligence and actually do a little research.

they usually have some sort of resume for which to have an opinion. I coached 7th grade basketball. Most of them are fantastic from either an X’s and O’s standpoint or good at color commentary. Dan Dakich know’s his X’s and O’s, he pisses people off with his color.

Practice at 10am and if Shaq needs to work on sth, he may show up at 9am. He’ll already find Kobe there shooting at 7am. Shaq thought, “Geez, this kid has been shooting 1930 times! He should relax and settle down. Maybe take a day off coming to the gym!”

I don't really agree with your opinion

but that’s why it’s your opinion. One thing I do think is funny though is that Bob Knight can call a Purdue game with less bias than Dan Dakich, although I think most broadcasters are very biased. Believe it or not, I think Knight is one of the least biased. Now put him on the sidelines at IU to call a game and I’m sure it wouldn’t be the same way.

by clarkaj24 on Jan 30, 2012 3:28 PM EST reply actions

I agree with Knight

Although he is not the most eloquent commentator, I actually appreciate the way he calls a game. He calls it both ways, gets on the refs, doesn’t respect show boating, and generally gives the audience some good knowledge about the game.

I feel like I learn something new about the game of basketball

and how it should be played everytime I listen to him. He may be a bitter enemy, but he sure does know basketball. He just calls it like he sees it and doesn’t care who he offends. That’s ultimately what got him in trouble at IU.

+1

I enjoy Knight as well. His commentating is normally right on and unbiased. I love his admiration for players that use the pump fake. Man, if you hit a pull up after getting your guy out a position with a pump fake, he will be on your jock. ESPN will probably even show a reply or two of it so Bob can comment a few more times. He has an old school appreciation for the game and players that play it the “right” way.

by jeckel543 on Jan 30, 2012 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

Knight is awesome, he’s the professor of basketball. I only wish he would do more games. I have also watched his coaching DVDs, the man is an amazing teacher who probably knows more about the game than anyone alive.

Dakich is cool

Who cares if he’s an ass, he knows what he’s talking about. Takes a lot of shit from both sides and still doesn’t sway him. I think most Purdue fans hate him cause he has a rooting interest. He played and coached at a school, I’m fine with him liking his alma mater more than his alma maters fiercest rival as long as he’s using his basketball IQ to prove points he believes in. And it seems like he likes Painter more than Crean, who knows if that’s true, but just a testament to how much respect he gives Painter in an IU-centric state

by daross9406 on Jan 30, 2012 5:26 PM EST reply actions

Sorry strongly disagree with this

IMO Dakich is very fair and complimentary of Purdue, particularly on his radio show. If anything on his show he hates on IU more than anyone, I think just to get a rise out of the larger IU listnership in Indy.

I think his color work is better than most on TV. He actually provides analysis like a coach would, rather than the bland – and usually very wrong – analysis of some of the other ESPN and BTN guys. He knows the B1G ten teams as good as anyone in the country, IMO, and I really never sense any bias in his commentary.
