Next Season
Next season I am interested to see what starting lineup Painter throws out there. I have a pretty good feeling he is going to start the upperclassmen to start out with and we will see:
PG: RJ
SG: TJ
SF: Barlow
PF: Bird
C: Carroll
But am I the only one that says start the young guys? I am not even saying this because "the grass is greener", but I do think that a large part of the E'Twaun/JJ/Hummel success came from the experience they had. I know they were good. Heck this 2012 class probably has no chance of being as good talent wise, but if we start all 4 freshman I think that by there JR/SR years they could be a top 5 team in the nation. They have the unique opportunity to have a sum larger than the individual parts because their FIT is so good. They will be big, they will be physical, they will have a pass first PG, they will have a guy that can get his own shot, and they will play defense. I say start them from day one. It may make us barely worse in the short term, but could pay off with a final four long term IMO.
Stuff in the FanPosts is entirely at the discretion of those that post them. They do not represent the views of Hammer & Rails, SBNation, or Purdue University in any way.

Earn it
I am as excited as anyone else about the next two classes, but let them show the team they deserve it on the court. Talent and hard work will always rise to the top. Besides you never know, guys like T.J. and Byrd can make this their team before this year is even done.

TJ has already shown that he's ready to take over this team
He’s confident in his play and I’ve seen him giving out instructions on defense.

Carroll might start the first game as C,
but it won’t be long until A.J. Hammons takes over. I’m not saying he’s the second coming of Joe Barry Carroll, but the pieces are there for him to take over easily his freshman year.
I completely agree with the first guy though, you simply have to earn it in Painter’s scheme.
Starting only means so much
Remember Painter let Bade start when JJ was late for the game.
The making people earn the starting spot seems to work well. It provides competition without cutthroat, and coaches can adjust as the game goes on. At least, in theory.

Are you talking about beginning of the season or end of the season?
Here’s my projection -
Beginning of the season: TJ, AJ, Barlow, Byrd, Carroll
End of season: TJ, AJ, Barlow, Byrd, Hammons
I am inclined to start Hale/Lawson at the 4, but then that’ll leave us without any outside shooting (AJ is a 23% 3-pt shooter, and TJ isn’t that great either). We really need them to improve on their shots in the off-season.
While I am excited about the incoming frosh, I am reluctant to put too much expectation on them. Frosh shouldn’t just be given a starting gig b/c they are “talented.” They need to earn it. Plus, while ranking isn’t everything, it may still be good to use as a reference. TJ was ranked around 50-ish coming out of high school but still couldn’t earn a starting gig as a sophomore (until recently), so it may be too much to expect guys ranked anywhere between 70-ish to 120-ish to get a starting gig in their first season. Of course, I’d be happy to be wrong and LOVE to see RJ to become next season’s Trey Burke (ranked 80-ish as a high school senior but is making major contribution).
AJ, huh?
I like the rest of your picks, but something tells me that RJ will be starting at some point year.

Ronnie will likely start immediately.
Painter has discussed this at length before and I think it makes perfect sense. Terone is improving by the game and should start at the 2.

I'm thinking the same.
I think by the end of the year the line up will look something like RJ, TJ, Barlow, Hammons, insert whatever Painter thinks we need more. This position I think will fluctuate between Byrd/Davis and Lawson/Hale.
Beginning of the year I can see it being TJ, Barlow, Byrd, Carrol, and either Lawson or AJ. This matters entirely on how well the recruits come in and play though. The two
Blah post fail.
The two I see having hte best chance of cracking the starting lineup early are Hammons and RJ.
I just want to unleash the hydra
other wise known as the three headed johnson. AJ, TJ, RJ, that shit cray
Larry Clisby will love that one.
Although I will say he has done a fantastic job this year with terone and AJ on the court.

The recruits will get plenty of play time.
Simpson might be redshirted since he would technically be third on the depth chart for his position. RJ and Hammons will put in a lot of meaningful minutes. Davis I can also see getting some quality minutes, but he will have to work his way past a lot of experienced guards to accomplish that.
I don't think Simpson should redshirt
I’ve seen him play, he is much better offensively than Lawson and I’m not sure about Hale. He’s much bigger than both Lawson and Hale at 6’9" or 6’10" and anywhere between 235-250 lbs.. His stats this season aren’t blowing anyone out of the water, but he is playing on a team with six other D1 guys. I think Simpson will earn some good minutes next year. Plus, I don’t like redshirting him because it will affect our already limited number of scholarships for ‘14/’15.

redshirting him won't affect our scholarships for '14/'15
he’ll be on scholarship one way or the other for that season.
i dont think we have anyone coming in who strikes me as an obvious redshirt candidate. obviously that’s a decision that months away regardless.

Good point...
Forgot he’d still be there for ’15. Hale, on the other hand ,could affect that.

That's correct.
Redshirting him would affect the 2016 recruiting class… Which is so far away at this point.
Light years in terms of recruiting
To put into perspective, the 2016 recruiting class is currently in 8th grade…. lol

he just likes to try and dunk it

There is really no effect on scholarships
It’s like John Hart. He was red-shirted, does it mean he screws up the 2012-13 scholarship? No, we were still recruiting Gary Harris. I am sure had we gotten GH and no one leaves the program, Hart will move on elsewhere. As it stands now, it may actually be good to have Hart next year for us since we didn’t get GH.
3 pt. shooting?
I think A. Johnson is going to get more time than some are indicating. He is a sniper that, IMO, will be a 40% 3 pt. shooter before he is through. This year he reminds me of Ryne in his Soph year. You can see he has a good stroke but nothing is falling (got a little glimpse on Sat. though). We’re going to need some guys on the floor who can make you pay if you zone us. That’s why I think Byrd will play solid minutes next year too. Our other wing players are better going to the basket. Hopefully, at PG Ronnie can keep them honest also.

Agree
I absolutely agree that AJ is going to be a big time 3 point shooter for us. He was great in high school and I believe he might even turn it around before the end of the year. I think he’s like 9/35 on the season, which isn’t great but I think he missed something like 12 in a row at one point during the end of the non-conference. Hopefully he takes open looks the rest of the year, as I could see him shoot around 35% the rest of the year.
I can’t believe how many people are already getting off the AJ bandwagon in favor of guys who have yet to suit up. People were talking about AJ averaging 10ppg this year. I think there are too many people on this board who expect way too much out of freshman, and then when they don’t live up to the ridiculous expectations people start saying they aren’t good. Remember AJ will be in his 3rd year with the program next year, and most guys make their biggest improvements between Frosh and Soph year. I think AJ and TJ will be 2 of our top 3 scorers next year.
Go Big or Go Home
Here’s the lineup of the future:
Forward 1: Tacos
Forward 2: Lawson
Forward 3: Simpson
Forward 4: Marcius
Center: Hammons
Am I kidding? Yes, very much so. My point though, we will have size next year my friends. There’s 5 players all over 6’8". I know size isn’t everything, just ask Lewis Jackson. But there is a day on the horizon when opposition will see us on the schedule and say to themselves “How are we going to win the rebounding battle against them?”. Painter has obviously made size a priority in his recruiting (just look at the incoming classes) and I for one am excited.
My actual lineup: TRJ (yes they’re one hybrid person)/Barlow/Byrd/Lawson/Hammons
I hope we turn into a more athletic fast paced team
We could potentially have a great offense if Painter slightly changes his gameplan and approach. We will finally have some athleticism in the coming years, including ’13 class, and I think Painter needs to realize this.
I'm thinking we will start the year small
With TJ/AJ/Barlow/Byrd/Carrol. Towards the end, I’m thinking TJ/Barlow/Byrd/Hale/Hammons (IF TJ and Barlow get better with their outside shots). With AJ-RJ-Davis-Lawson-Carrol being the bench getting significant minutes. Davis will probably get the fewest out of those, simply because of Byrd and Barlow being seniors. I’m tempted to switch Lawson and Hale, and I think that will depend on the game. But think of the defense we would have with those 5 on the floor! We’ve seen TJ progress this year a lot on defense, and we all know Barlow and Byrd are tenacious defenders who can shut down pretty much anyone on a given night. Pair that with an athletic power forward who can block shots and rebound, and a giant in the middle with Hammons….its going to be difficult for teams to score on us with that line-up. That’s personally why I think that will be the starting lineup to end the season with, but of course RJ or AJ could end up starting….I just don’t think their defense will be as good as the trio of TJ-Barlow-Byrd. For an offensive line-up, I would say TJ-AJ-Davis-Byrd-Hammons (really don’t know about the five in that lineup, but again, a late-season lineup) and yes I’ve overthought this by WAY too much.
I Agree
With almost everyone. The good news is we have options. Been awhile since we could match up with a big line up. But we could go in so many directions. But I will never agree to red shirting Simpson there is nothing to be gained. He has the size he has the body and he has the skills . Painter can now lose players in that fifth year. But when you have this much talent there is only so many minutes. Should be fun.
leadership
I think the better question is who will be our leaders on and off the court.
by boilernerd on Jan 30, 2012 7:00 PM EST via Android app reply actions
At some point
we are going to have to roll with a power forward and center. Byrd does a lot of great things, but he is not a power forward and to put him there destroys our chances of rebounding. I like:
TJ
Barlow
Byrd
Hale, Lawson, or Carrol
Hammons
This gives us a chance to rebound, block shots, and defend the post and forward position w/o having to collapse our entire defense and leaving shooters open on the perimeter. We will have potentially 6 scholarship players that are slated for the #4 and #5 positions. Seems odd we would continue to play a guard at the power forward position.
They would be good defensively but.....
On offense, against a good zone, they would struggle mightily. I would play RJ or AJ instead of Barlow.
by Hummel's figurines on Jan 31, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions
huhhh?
I like the fact that rebounding, blocking shots, and defending the post is all cleared up, but what about generating points? how are we going to score with that 5? I mean i know its Purdue basketball which is defense oriented, but You know you wont get much from hammons, he’ll primary be there to play in the middle and block shots and rebound, likewise for lawson and carrol. I think hale has the capability of putting some points up, but we still dont know that for sure. We know that Barlow doesnt have an outside shot, and TJ is very inconsistent from 3. The good thing about TJ is that he still is able to generate points without shooting from beyond the 3 point line likewise for Barlow. in fact, the only way barlow does score is if he drives to the lane and through free throws. Byrd is the only player out there that is somewhat of a 3pt threat. We wouldnt spread teams out at all. Barlow and TJ are gonna have to work a ton on there outside game.
We don't have the offensive talent to generate the traditional scoring so
we have to produce points off our defense.
