Football Signings Gone Wild
Does it seem like we are signing some really good players late in the season, and all of them are decent QB s ? I think it's great if they're all talented. It just seems like we're getting kids out of no where, even scholarship kids that are willing to walk on. Maybe it's just a lot of time and effort paying off for coach Hope, I hope so. But to me it really seems unusual to sign someone each week since the season's been over. I'm not knocking it, it seems pretty cool. Does anyone have insight to the quality and quantity we're signing ?
P.S. What's up with the craziness around Gunner Kiel ? Holy Crap!

short answer
No one knows what these players are capable of except their high school coaches and hopefully the person on our staff who recruited them. Stars, positions, labels coming out of high school are pretty inconsistent after you get past the first 100 or so prospects because there just isn’t enough time for anyone to take it all in. Apparently Hope is looking for athletes first and positional needs second; this is the same approach the Patriots use in the NFL (and to a lessor extent Oregon with their skill positions) but requires a good coaching staff to align everyone seemlessly, so hopefully we can pull it off.
I have loved seeing all the new signees
The QB’s are mostly athletes – I think the QB is just the position they play in h.s. because they’re the best athlete in the school, but they will likely be used at WR, etc.
It's nice to have options
but I worry about a two QB system in the coming years when I hope Appleby is THE guy. Bilal Marshall really wants to play QB and is expecting to earn a starting spot.
Gunner Kiel to ND.
I hope they got out Jimmy Claussen’s old red carpet.
At least IU fans get to cheer for him afterall
A happy ending
IMO
I would bank on Marshall being the QB of the future for us right now. Just a gut feeling.
Really?
why don’t you think Appleby will be the guy? I was really impressed with him on the Elite 11 show.
Why do YOU think Appleby is the guy?
There isn’t much to back up the argument for either. It’s just a gut feeling.

Appleby is a pocket passer
We don’t run that type of offense anymore.
Reaction images? I got 'em

Yeah, I remember Orton’s fantastic ability to beat defenses Purdue with his legs.

well
we haven’t had a qb really capable of running it since elliot. you can’t run an offense you want to without the right guy no matter how badly you want to do it.
Rob Henry would like a word with you.

I think boilerrob meant running it as in a system based on a pocket passer
not running the ball like Henry does. However, I wouldn’t say Elliot was a pocket passer either. Painter was.
Ah. My bad.

correct
I love rob henry, but he’s a dual threat guy at best and needs an offense structured that way. If Tiller was still coaching he probably would have already moved to slot WR.
It's an interesting situation
I can see where you’re coming from, because lately Hope is recruiting speed, and guys that can run well. For some reason, I can see the offense becoming less traditional and more like a spread, but Appleby can’t be overlooked either. They seem like polar opposites in playing styles, kind of like Marve and TerBush. Just no more 2-qb systems please!
From what I’ve seen, both statistically and result wise, Appleby had an ugly senior season.
I know it’s irrelevant if he isn’t surrounded by talent, but some Purdue fans are treating this guy like the savior and a guaranteed lock as our quarterback of the future and there hasn’t been enough to come even close to proving he’s that guy yet.

44% and 8 touchdowns
Heard his school isn’t that good overall, but doesn’t really justify completing 44% of your 237 passes.

I am with you
I love Appleby after seeing the ESPN show. But I am concerned every time we treat someone as the savior, and it is just some expectation that is ridiculous to meet. I mean, Drew Brees came in when no one expects anything from him (or the football team). The first moment a player with hype struggles, he is thrown under the bus mercilessly.
The nice thing is, Appleby gets at least 2 yrs to improve, I think. Next season will be (hopefully) Marve’s, and then (hopefully) Henry in 2013.
It's strange...
but I have the same gut feeling. Appleby could be it, but you really never know.

Could be the walkon
Happened at PSU…could happen at Purdue. Just everything that I’ve heard about both makes me think that Marshall will win out, with Appleby as the backup.
I'd put equal $ in Marshall and Appleby
Appleby impresses me with his mental skill and preparedness, but his physical skill is less to be desired. Marshall seems to have the physical skill, and the type of offense that Hope is running gives him an edge. So I’d say even right now.
The Latest QBs...
have got me more excited than the first couple. The Gregory kid (former Ark commit) might be very good as well as Marshall. I think Hope wants a “Cam Newton” type (who doesn’t ?) vs. a straight drop back guy. I don’t know, maybe it’s like baseball and all you sign are short stops who end up playing center field. We just sign QB’s and tell them they’re the man, and then ask them to do something else when they get here. I’d almost take a chance on a young talent and develop him for the next 4 years vs. replay last year again, that doesn’t interest me. Maybe 1 tough year, for 3 great ones.
Another thing… I can’t understand why we can’t get a stud receiver. For Purdue to not have a receiver reach the next level of the NFL seems incredible with all the talent we’ve had. A great receiver can really help a QB, a RB, and the whole team. Can one of these guys be that receiver ? It seems logical that the Cradle of QBs, should have a Cradle of WRs.
Problem is those cradle of quarterbacks created a system of receivers. Chris Daniels, Vinny Sutherland, John Standeford, Taylor Stubblefield and Dorien Bryant were all beasts at receiver during the Tiller days but none of them did much of anything in the NFL. So while we’ve seen past success, a lot of it was more because of the system instead of the actual talent at wide out.

Defenses adjusted their systems
To stop our system. Especially when ours got popular nationwide.
The bubble screen was way exciting once. That was us. Now, not so much.

I'm sick of everyone complaining about bubble screens
They are an essential part of most spread offenses. Most of the time they are not designed to be the big play, but set up the big play. Yes bubble screens often do not gain more than 4-5 yards and they can lose a few, but without them you cannot set up other things you want to run.
It’s the same idea of using a play-action passing game if the other team doesn’t fear the run you can’t run it, but most run don’t go for longer than 4-5 yards.
Compare the bubble screen in Tiller's years to what we have now
and you may understand the bad rap our current bubble screen has. It is a great tool if used properly.
Three reasons
1. We may have 11 QBs but none get throw deep, or the one who can throw deep is not playing within the system.
2. Our WRs don’t have good history in the NFL. Bryan covered that already.
3. We are talking about Danny Hope. He only knew to get his QB to read-option run and bubble screen.
Junk in, junk out; good stuff in, good stuff out
I remember at the luncheon Hope spoke at that he talked about having a person dedicated to recruiting this year. Before there was one person that spend 25% of his time coordinating recruiting; and that this year they have one person that 100% of their job is coordinating the recruiting. Probably the most important thing this person would do was do a better job of identifying folks who wanted to go to Purdue and who Purdue wanted to play football.
Note to the AD: Investing in a program can work.
Gunner Madness
Reversible jacket sales are going to go through the roof! The jacket companies must be paying Gunner off to go to ND.
Little-known fact, it was actually IU bball fans that sold Gunner on IU.
He just didn’t realize until now that all of them watch their football in SB.
