Robert Marve Granted 6th Year Of Eligibility
You can take this as either a good thing or a bad thing. Robert Marve will return to the Purdue Boilermakers next year. The quarterback was granted his sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Marve has been bit by the injury bug both of his seasons at Purdue, but he should be healthy next season.
That raises an even more interesting question. Who exactly is going to play QB next season? We bring back Marve, Terbush and a healthy Rob Henry. Throw in Sean Robinson and we can play a quarterback each quarter of the game. Opponents will never see it coming!
I think that that Henry should win the job if he's healthy. I also wouldn't mind a possible transition to tight end for him, just to get his athleticism on the field. Either way, he's going to be a factor.
All in all, I want us to decide on one quarterback for the season. Keep it simple and keep it fun. Naming one guy as the go to QB allows chemistry to build for the entire offense. It's going to be an interesting off-season as we look to keep the progress from this season moving.

Four QB system
Rob Henry will be back and Sean Robinson comes off of redshirt. Well, with four guys having starting experience we’ll at least have some depth

I can just see the Thursday presser now...
“Well, we had a drawing to see which QB would play each quarter. Sean is gonna play the first quarter, then Robert is gonna take care of the second, Rob Henry will play the third, and we’re gonna have Caleb play the fourth.”
Well, I think the Hopester goes one step further
“We have four excellent QBs and we are going to take advantage of that. To keep the opponents off balance and keep them guessing, we’ve asked our engineers to develop a randomizer to be used on the sideline to decide which QB plays which quarter. This way, we can always get the opposing defense on their heels.”

I can't wait
to hear Hope justify his QB rotation plan.
Hope and Nord can’t even manage a play clock! How are they supposed to manage 4 QB’s. I find those two are at their best in simple situations where fewer options are available and difficult decisions do not have to be made.
Four QBs?
I thought we have 8 if you include the incoming frosh.
Honestly, the incoming quarterbacks that stay at position will all redshirt, Parker is a buried walk-on and Robinson won’t see any playing time so it should be three QBs.

Have we not all learned to stop saying "Robinson won't see any playing time?"
Why don’t you just take a claw hammer to the knees of everyone on the depth chart ahead of him?

The bigger question is
why the hell didn’t Keith Smith get a 6th year?
Now THAT's a Damn Good Quesiton
Maybe Marve got his 6th as a reward for singing to NCAA Enforcement about the Shapiro Shenanigans in Coral Gables.
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
That was my first thought when seeing the news. Smith tore his ACL a week or two before Marve, so he had even less of a 2010 season. More than any other organization I’ve ever seen, the NCAA seems to make stuff up as it goes.

I think the difference lies in their redshirt years
Smith, if I recall, played as a true freshman, then redshirted for personal reasons the next year. Marve redshirted his first season at Miami because of injuries sustained in a car accident. By definition, it is a medical hardship waiver, so that is why Smith was denied I think.

Something's got to give
Barring further injuries (no small task), it creates a log jam with four game-ready guys. That is assuming Robinson progressed in his RS year. It is nice insurance to not rush Henry back, and allows Appleby to RS as well. Not sure who would consider a position change, but if someone wants to play, they might jump at the chance. I really hope one guy will distance himself so we don’t go back and forth, but they all seem to have different skill sets with strengths and weaknesses. I would love to see Terbush be able to throw deep and still keep his low INT rate. His bottom line was that he didn’t turn it over, but who knows what the Hopester is thinking. Can’t wait for us to have flawless spring practices.

Yes, it's definitely good news
Two yrs ago Hope was gushing how Marve is the best QB he has ever seen. Last summer his health didn’t allow him to win the QB job, but I fully expect him to do so this time (barring an injury, of course).
All I want is competition in training camp and may the best QB win the job. Be it Henry, Marve, CTB, or even Robinson. Now in an ideal world, I’d like to see Marve be the starting QB, CTB as his backup, Henry became a Siller-type wildcat QB, and Robinson to move to safety.
And let the 5 or 6 incoming QBs be either walk-on, red-shirt (Appleby), or move to WR or other posn.
Yeah, the Henry/Siller replacement is what we're liable to see next year...
…and probably a lot more wildcat formations.
Anything that involves CTB not running the ball I support.

BTW, any of the incoming QBs also play basketball?
I love basketball players who have QB experience. Like Chris Kramer or Aaron Craft are both former QB. They provide leadership and toughness. Since we have so many QBs on the football team, if one of them also play good bball maybe he can walk-on to the basketball team. After all, they are not going to get PT on the football team next season anyway.
Unless then can
rebound, make free throws, and have any sort of post game….

Henry won't be ready
ACL’s take a min of 14 months maybe 18 months. Marve should start with Applebee in waiting
Marve returned in less than a year.
If rehab goes well Henry should be “ready” around the beginning of the season. I use the word in quotations because that won’t factor in him missing the spring and missing a ton of practice time to the point where if Marve wasn’t back I more or less was assuming TerBush would be for sure starting next season before Henry got worked in a la Marve this year. Except at least the two QB system would make more sense with those two, as there’s a night and day difference between TerBush and Henry unlike the TerBush-Marve duo.

Henry may "return" in less than a year
But I doubt he can overtake Marve as the #1 QB in the camp. In any case, it doesn’t matter what I think. I just want there to be a fair competition and whoever wins gets to play unless in blow outs or injuries.
It will be tought for Henry
He’s basically a running back that throws the ball here and there.
Well, that describes Tebow too
If he wins like Tebow then I don’t mind.
I just don't think that's correct
ACL’s vary tremendously from person to person, and Rob Henry seems to be one that deals with it extremely well. The missed practice time etc, will have a much bigger impact than physically being able to perform.
Only if
you’re a pessimist. I’m willing to give Marve one last shot…I hope he wins the battle outright.
Not necessarily pessimist
He could be a realist. If he is a Marve hater or a CTB lover and he knows a healthy Marve would realistically beat CTB outright then it is really, really bad news.
Jackson just hates Marve....

Play-call fail
It’s obviously a situation for the read option up the gut for 2 yards.
Here is how I see it
The Marve-Henry rotation was working better, and I can see Marve winning the job with Henry as a wildcat/slot/superback type. TerBush will be the primary backup, with Robinson 3rd string and the others redshirting.
In 2013 we will have Robinson/Henry/Appleby vie for the starting job.

I like the Henry idea
If he is healthy and ready to go for 2012, I like the idea of using him in the “Wild Siller” or a slot receiver. I think Marve should be the guy with TerBush as the main backup. Robinson at 3rd string or if he wants to play now put him in at safety or WR. He played a little WR in high school and has good size (6’3" 210) to be a Siller-like receiver. All freshman redshirt with Robinson, Henry, and Appleby as the guys in 2013.

Did you watch NW this year?
I envision Marve starting with Henry in a Kain Colter type role. I hope Hope watched the tape this year of NW….they didn’t have the best season, but I think that kind of system could work really well.
I think Henry should win if healthy
Our team plays its best when we run the ball a lot over the last 2 years. Henry gives us our best chance to do that because he forces Nord and Hope to run the ball instead of messing around with slants and bubble screens.
How about some support?
Marve brings leadership: plain and simple. I like CTB, and Henry has proven himself an amazing athlete, but this team needs leadership more than anything. Marve has unquestioned command over this offense – even if he isn’t the most talented of the QBs (which is a question, not a declaration). I don’t like the 2 QB system any more than anybody else; but…a 6th year, proven talent is our best option. CTB should see some action, and Henry is just too athletic to ignore, but Marve is our starting QB. I’m all on board until Marve proves me wrong. This may run contrary to popular opinion, but I think that Marve is our best option for the 12’-13’ season. It’s time to go “all in” and put our support behind Marve for one year. After this year: let the debates begin. Until then, let’s rally behind a mature, proven leader with a knack for winning the big game. It’s Marve time in W.L. Boiler UP!
I'll have a hard time enjoying "Marve time"
since it likely involves countless interceptions in important moments of games. Rob Henry is the guy before we move into Austin Appleby’s era.

I referred to him a tease to my friends because he’ll come in, start moving the ball and then the drive stalls every time just out of field goal range. That and the abundance of interceptions.
proven leader with a knack for winning the big game
Just out of curiosity, where did he get that knack for winning the big game? In 2008 he played in two games where Miami beat teams with a winning record (by 8 points), 16-10 (Wake Forest) and 16-14 (VT) where he went 18-36-274-0-0.
The only big game he’s actually ‘won’ was the Ohio State game, and that was a home game versus a 6-7 team without most of their stars in the midst of turmoil and a new coach. Trust me, I HATE Ohio State (I’m from Ohio), but that’s the best win he’s had in his entire career…and only happened after he threw a pick after we could have gotten a potential field goal (and would have clinched the game had we not blocked an extra point).
While TerBush was the better option in ‘11, Marve has the potential to be the guy in ’12. That’s true, we’re all aware. And will he finally get it right? Possibly so and I’ll be all for it.
Support Marve if you want but don’t make up credentials for him. Personally I kind of wanted to see a (if healthy) set-up with Henry, maybe with TerBush because it could actually work. At the very least, let’s see how Henry can throw the ball when he’s not trying to play with a lacerated finger.

Terbush
And Terbush didn’t make awful decsions? How about shitting his pants everytime a defender gets close to him? How about awful interceptions like the Notre Dame throw?
Most of Marve’s picks have been on the receiver.
I think now that Marve knows he has more time to play, he won’t rush things as much.
And Terbush
Is prone to holding on to the ball too long and taking sacks that crush drives as well.
TerBush had six interceptions in 13 games…including one that was also the fault of the WR, one that was just throwing it up there (fourth down) and one that was because of a horrendous no-call PI. Another came well after the fact in the Wisconsin game and one in the season opener (his first start). His only ‘awful’ decision was the ND throw, which I feel was a bit forced because they wanted to come out slinging it for some reason and he stuck with the gameplan when he shouldn’t of forced the ball.
The only Marve INT that could be blamed on the WR was in the Michigan game and will it did pop off of Siller it didn’t help Marve threw a laser off Siller’s shoulder on a quick screen instead of hitting him in the numbers.
Like I already said, Marve may very well start and play pretty good in 2012 but there’s no reason to try to spin or change what happened in 2011. TerBush managed the game, didn’t make many mistakes. Marve was prone to making to many mistakes when he came in, hence why even though he played in almost every game since September, he never started or saw all that much of an increase in playing time (outside of the Iowa game where he had three turnovers). The fact that they kept going to him showed they wanted him to be the guy, the fact that they kept starting TerBush showed that they thought he was committing to many mistakes to hand him the starting role.

Mistakes
I think the conservative nature of Terbush and the mistake prone nature of Marve was a direct result of the two QB system. My opinion is that Terbush played conservatively because he figured if he didn’t turn the ball over he wouldn’t get yanked from the game. Conversely, Marve knew he only had a few reps each game to make an impact so sometimes he took unnecessary risks to hopefully spark the offense, thus making it more difficult to pull him from the game. I’m fine with a two QB system when it is two drastically different styles of play (Marve or Terbush & Henry), as you force the defense to prepare for different offensive looks. When the QB’s are virtually the same in terms of style (Terbush & Marve), the defense doesn’t have to prepare for anything different. I think we need to pick between Terbush and Marve and work Henry back into the fold, much like we did at the start of the season last year. Bring Henry in for a change of pace but let the other QB take the majority of the snaps. There is just something about Marve’s moxie that I like and I hope he wins the starting job.
Marve all the way
I’m sure this has been said already but there is no way with a full spring and summer to get ready that Marve doesn’t start. IMO he is our best option. Yes he can be a lil wild sometimes but he is the most composed and showed some of the most heart this past season and can’t forget having the best arm.
Questions
We all know each of our 3 primary QBs have their own flaws. It is unfair to assume Marve or Henry will be the savior, nor assume CTB couldn’t contribute whatsoever. So here are some questions to consider:
1) We know Marve is prone to INT but may give us big plays. CTB plays it safe but don’t expect much with him running the offense. So do you think it is more correctable for Marve to cut down his mistakes or more likely for CTB to develop some accurate deep throws?
2) We know both Henry and Marve suffered ACL tear. Marve’s first tear is July 2009 and his second tear is Sep 2010. Henry’s tear is Aug 2011. If we look at Marve in Sep 2010 (14 months after first tear) and Sep 2011 (12 months after second tear), he was underwhelming and wasn’t sharp at all in his games. Do you think Henry will recover faster than Marve?
3) We know Henry is not a good passer, not even as good as CTB. So are you willing to completely give up the passing game completely to put a more athletic to run read-options, or do you want to have a QB who can throw some to keep the defense off balance?
4a) At the end of the day, which of these do you want most: 1) ability for big-play, 2) ability to play mistake-free, or 3) a strong running threat from the QB posn?
4b) Or from another perspective, which of these flaws are you most willing to live with: 1) gamble throw that doesn’t pay off (might result in INT), 2) no big-play ability, or 3) no passing ability?
I was interested in seeing how TerBush progressed in 2012 since I figured Marve was gone and TerBush was going to at least start the season thanks to the ACL injury for Henry. TerBush didn’t throw the long ball in 2011 but he was never really given the opportunity. On the two throws I remember from the WMU game, the refs probably should have called a PI on one and Bush lost the ball on the other, so they were both decent enough throws. I honestly felt (or hoped) that they’d get more invested throughout the entire season in the running game so as long as TerBush progressed in the off-season I had a feeling he could of surprised people a bit. Now that Marve’s back I think he’ll probably get the spot. If TerBush wins it I think everyone will be overly critical of him regardless of how he plays to the point where he won’t get any credit whatsoever.
I think if Marve is the starter he’ll be up and down throughout the season. I’m hoping he’ll become more consistent in actually scoring the ball, but I can definitely see him committing far to many turnovers that would hurt us in a handful of games. If we want to have a more ‘explosive’ offense at the expense of increased turnovers, then people will want Marve. If we can’t drop down our penalties, those added turnovers could really be costly though.
We know Henry is not a good passer, not even as good as CTB. So are you willing to completely give up the passing game completely to put a more athletic to run read-options, or do you want to have a QB who can throw some to keep the defense off balance?
At times it’s hard to truly judge Henry’s throwing ability as a freshman because of his injury to his finger on his throwing hand. Hard to be as accurate as you can be with that kind of injury. I was hoping to see improvement on it this season, but as we know he didn’t play. That’s why an inevitable Henry/TerBush system if Marve didn’t come back could have made sense, but that’s most likely not gonna happen now.

I like Marve but...
Nord/Hope are such horrible play callers and decision makers, they might not know how to call appropriate plays for Marve. Marve can move well for a QB, can make the big play, and is an emotional leader on the field. There are a ton of plays you can run through a QB with his talents.
Henry is more of a runner. Playing Henry will shrink the playbook and make it easier for Nord/Hope to call the appropriate plays. I don’t like it, but you might have to consider putting players on the field our coaches can manage versus the traditional best choice.
2012-2013 QB
No matter who starts next year for Purdue, to continue to move forward the next starting QB will have to be/have:
1.The backing of his entire team/Leadership and support of the fans
2. Be consistent!
3. Be Effective
4. Limit Mistakes/Plays that absolutely kill Purdue/Interceptions at the worst time
5. Decision Making/which ties into above
6. Know when to roll them and when to fold them!
All the weapons are in place if the right plays are called, and Purdue executes. Consecutive Bowl games will be the reward.
Nothing from last season or the previous season has made me think any of this can happen. They can all happen during the 2012-2013 season, but never will at the same time.
Sure DH is here for at least 1 more year but none of this can happen with him as coach. Maybe DH saw how Wisky’s 1 year QB could vault them to the Rose Bowl and is trying for one last 1 year shot with Marve? I just really hope that DH is not compiling a scheme for Purdue football to have a 2 QB system (CTB for 1.5 QTR, Marve for 1, and CTB for the rest), some teams have used it (wildcat) to deal with specific situations but it has not been successfully implemented as a teams full offensive game plan.
Overall, I would rate him one or two stair steps above Painter. He has the same physicals (just little faster on his feet) and just a good edge mentally. However, I struggle on his reading of the defense and without DH/Nord’s designed roll outs, Marve would be out in trouble. The big question is can DH keep Marve “plaing in the system?”
This is probably a smart move for Marve because he would have no future in the NFL after this past year and needs 2012 to get some buzz created, if he ever wants a shot.
Marve has matured
Marve has matured a lot since his Miami wild nights and now as a 6th year QB he will be the same age as some NFL QB’s. He’s got the arm and now has the mindset- I think he will have a great season throwing the ball to Henry
Add a 5th
Does Curtis Painter have any eligibility left?
