Curtis Painter
I'm sure most of you have heard by now, but Jim Irsay announced today that the Colts don't expect Manning back this season. We've seen Kerry Collins come out of retirement and slowly get better every week, but I don't think many Colts fans are convinced that he can keep starting.
How about CP last night? The first few posessions showed an inexperienced quarterback learning on the fly. The fumble return for a TD came from his inexperience and not realizing what it means when "The Hair" is coming in on a blitz. That last drive, however, showed me something. Painter clearly knows the offense better than Collins, and he made some solid throws. He led the Colts to a tying touchdown against the Steelers D. That's impressive.
Thoughts from Purdue fans on where the Colts should go from here at QB?

Go Painter
Collins hasn’t shown anything over the last several weeks and I don’t think Painter has had a fair chance at starting QB yet. He may not be good or great but he still has room to grow.
AAAAAAAMEN
I’ve said for so long now that Painter has never really been given a decent opportunity to play. Anytime he’s thrown the ball up until last night, it was either at the end of a pointless game or to a second/third string receiver in the preseason. Having the full and true starting O-line has a huge impact, and I think the guy really needed and got the chance last night to finally loosen up on the field and get comfortable. I just am too underwhelmed at Collins’ play at this point to favor him over Curtis.

Would love to see Painter keep playing
Being a Purdue fan also I might be a little biased, but I really feel like the Colts at least have a chance to win or at least score with Painter at QB. Since Collins’ first possesion against Houston, he has never seemed in control of the situation, and has never made defenses feel like we could actually score on them.
Basically, at least with Painter at QB there is hope for the Colts, and as a Purdue fan it is much more fun to watch.
Curtis Painter sucks.
Horrible pocket presence, continues to throw balls short of his receivers, fumbles almost every time he’s hit…
He hasn’t progressed since his sophomore year at Purdue.
He may be a better option than Collins at this point for the Colts, but Painter is not a pro QB.
Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team
I have to agree
Painter has been above average but not a winner since his time with the Vincennes Lincoln Alices. How can someone on the team for three years be considered inexperienced? Isn’t three years in when Rogers replace Farve?
I guess the Colts are going the ‘Suck for Luck’ route.
You do realize that...
Manning takes all of the snaps in practice each and every week when healthy? Therefore it’s almost next to impossible for Indy’s backup QBs to get pretty much any sort of practice at all.

I have a hard time believing the Colts give no snaps to their back up QB during practices...

sorry wrong button
supposed to say snaps yes but they are almost always running the scout team offense and their plays so he gets no practice at running the colts offense with anything other than practice squad players

Yet no major playing time...
in any meaningful situations or much time at all with the starters. As well as less chance to develop than any standard backup.

Concussion
Last night, reports said Collins was being treated for a concussion. If that’s the case, the chances of Painter starting next week are pretty good. At Collins’ age, you don’t rush right back in after a head injury.
Holding a clipboard for several years and not getting many practice snaps does not sharpen your craft. Painter may get better, he may not. However, to expect him to come in and look anything but rusty and nervous is unrealistic.

Go with Painter
I don’t think he has much more to offer than Collins. But at least Painter has to play for a backup position next year. Collins will be gone no matter what. Let Painter swim or drown.

hell yeah
He’s not great – but then again, great is not an option right now. Great was in the booth wearing street clothes.
Painter is either your backup or he’s not. Indy should have been prepping him a long time ago.

Painter
This is really the lesser of 2 evils but I think you go with Painter just to evaluate his worth to the team in the future. No Curtis will never be a quality starter in the NFL but lets find out if he is a serviceable backup or if he needs to hit the road. I have never been a fan of Painter’s play even during his days as a Boiler
At least give Painter a chance, even though he's not the answer
1. Start Painter over Collins. It’s a lost season anyway, and the Colts may as well give Painter a chance to see what he can do. Evaluate whether to keep him or drop him going forward. Decide whether or not to spend a high pick on QB. All these can only be answered if they keep playing Painter.
2. While I agree Painter hasn’t been getting the opportunities for the last several years b/c Peyton is getting all the snaps (real game or practice), but at some point we need to cut that excuse. What about Matt Cassel, who steps in nicely when Brady is out? (The Pats even made a good return on Cassel when they trade him after Brady comes back healthy) I am not even using the Aaron Rogers’ card (given Rogers is a first-round pick). As a starting college QB in a pass-happy offense, Painter should have all the advantage over Cassel who never started a game at USC.
3. I’d love to see Painter successful and prove the critics wrong. The kid is really due for a break after all the beating he has taken for “ruining” the Colts’ “perfect” season a couple yrs ago (not really his fault). However, he really hasn’t improved much since his first start at Purdue. And even at Purdue, he just dumped it to Dorient Bryant every time and hope Bryant makes a play. He also gets lucky to have Dustin Keller as his safety bailout, and I can’t count how many times Keller turns a 2-yard gain into a 80-yard TD (or at least a first down).

No fucking way.
Emphasis on no. Kerry wasn’t enough of an example that retirees aren’t the way to go?

No, no, no, no, no
we haven’t watched enough teams make that mistake?

Give Painter a chance
The kid has had a cup of coffee so far. He can throw the deep sideline on the OUTSIDE shoulder and the deep out before the break. Even the pro’s make some bad decisions.
I guess we know why some colleges keep two guys ready for Saturday. The Colts weren’t ready.
Dan Orlovsky
They brought him back, looks like he might be the new starter.
Not the new starter
But at least a backup if Collins can’t play and Painter is the starter.
