SB Nation Indiana Editor's Pick
Some good (and bad) I've been reading about Purdue bball (and football) players
The good:
1. Painter on Hummel, "He looked like he had good lateral movement and good spring..."
2. Anthony Johnson (avg 9 ppg on his European trip) seems to be embracing the Purdue basketball concept, "My No. 1 thing was to represent Purdue well...Every possession, I played hard. I wasn't worried about offense. I did attack the rim if my shot wasn't falling like I wanted it to."
3. Travis Carroll (avg 8-and-5 on his European trip) and Ryne Smith: "Each morning this summer, Carroll and Smith worked on fundamentals: Smith feeding Carroll in the post, and Carroll screening for shooting guard Smith."
Lastly, with football:
4. Appleby: His surgical knee has been test by doctors and it's actually stronger than his non-surgical knee
The bad:
1. Painter on Lawson, "He didn't look like he had the same spring to him as when I watched him in high school..."
Thankfully, only one bad, and Painter tried to spin it by saying that it's actually good considering Lawson's only be cleared to play a month ago. But at this point, I have to wonder if it is better for Lawson to redshirt this year, considering his skill is still raw, and his once mighty athletic ability is not back to full strength?
Lastly, just hope that we can go through an entire year without another torn ACLs or season-ending injury. Pleeeeaaase, it's about time these bad breaks revert to the mean.

I would love
Lawson to continue to gain strength and be an incredible athlete on the floor. We really need someone like that on the boards, and defensive end, especially after losing JJ.

I don't think he'll redshirt...
I’ve seen a lot of people overreact to those comments, but in reality it’s stating the obvious. He’s only been cleared for 1 month, which is not very long to expect a torn Achilles injury to completely heal.
Additionally, I think Painter will want the depth in the front court at his disposal. By the time he’ll potentially be needed (BT Season), he should be in much further along.

With an Achilles Injury....
how much leg conditioning can one possibly have during the healing process? These injuries take time.

Not much at all...
They are nasty little injuries. The impact is definitely not as bad as an ACL, but you are completely out of commission for an extended period of time. I think the fact that he’s cleared to play full contact is telling enough that he is in adequate health, he just needs to continue to practice and get back to where he was.
Everytime Painter gives a blunt comment like this, I immediately get the fear that the lynch mob might be eying their next victim…

The only way I see Lawson redshirting
Is if Painter has so much confidence in Hummel, Sandi, Carroll, Hale, and maybe Byrd to be able to effectively play the paint that he doesn’t see Lawson being able to get on the floor. I don’t see it happening with the lack of a proven 5. Once he gets back to full strength (which I assume at the very least will be before B1G play starts) he could really be a weapon with his athleticism, even if he is raw offensively.
Sounds more positive in full context though
"He didn’t look like he had the same spring to him that he did when I watched him in high school," Painter says, "but for somebody who tore his Achilles and has only been going here for about a month in terms of being released for everything, I thought he was great. He did some good things and worked really hard in the individual workout."
Maybe I just see it half-empty
Sounds to me the first sentence is more the reality and the latter stuff just Painter’s way of spinning it to sound more positive. After all, after an injury, any improvement is great and deserves encouragment, even if the athelete is just a shadow of his former self.
I'm surprised all the attention is on Lawson
…when there are four positive things (and only one negative). In particular I am somewhat excited about Anthony Johnson. It seems like he really embraces Painter’s coaching philosophy. He can be a more athletic version of Ryne Smith, and in a couple yrs, hopefully a more offensively-skilled Kramer!
