Stefan Jankovic: A New 2012 Target?

Stay connected for news and updates

It's been a popular assumption that A.J. Hammons and Gary Harris are Matt Painter's only outstanding targets for the class of 2012.

But if 6'10 Stefan Jankovic's final list is any indication, Matt Painter might be casting a wider net than we all expected.

Purdue has made Jankovic's final list along with Wake Forest, Georgetown, Florida State, and Missouri.

Looking at his highlights, it's easy to see why Painter would pursue the Huntington Prep (West Virginia) standout. He has athleticism similar to Donnie Hale, but plays a more European style of basketball. (And he's 3 inches taller.)

At 6'10/225 lbs,  he would be a great addition to the front court - especially with the Derek Willis vacancy. He can stretch the defense with his range, but also seems to have a rugged side down low.

The W.Va. Dispatch has some good things to say about the senior power forward:

Meanwhile, Jankovic has gained nearly 20 pounds in the last year and is now a hot commodity as a 6-10, 225-pound power forward that can stretch a defense and hit the 3-point shot consistently. With the bulk increase, Jankovic's scope has also increased in national recruiting circles.

For those of you overly concerned with his rankings, you should know that he has spent the entire evaluation period on the injured list with a stress fracture to his foot. His highlight reel, along with his recent 20 lb weight gain should prove that he's elite talent.

It's also worth noting the Huntington Prep's basketball team is one of the top in the nation. Like Jacob Lawson, he has to share the basketball with other high major talent.

I can't say I know much about Purdue's chances against these other schools, but I can say that Matt Painter has done very well with players of his skill set.

We'll stay on top of this new development.
