World Cup Open Thread, Anyone?
Hey Everyone!
So, if you're like me, recently you've been completely starved for any type of competitive sport (and don't start talking to me about baseball, because I am under 50 and don't really care).
And so, like me, since the NHL/NBA finals, you may have found yourself drifting aimlessly on the cruel summer sports tides. But wait - what's that shape on the horizon? It can't be NFL preseason!
Why, it's a ship! A ship filled with ladies! Attractive ladies. Talented, attractive ladies. Talented, attractive ladies who like to show off when defeating foreign nations.
My God - we're saved! It's the US Women's National Team! And they're heading to the World Cup finals on Sunday at 2:30 pm EST!
Quick! Someone wake up T-Mill, there's competitive sport happening! And the Good Girls are winning! They just defeated an evil, Ohio-State-Like team of talented, but somewhat tarnished stars. And they followed that up by beating France.
And now they're playing Japan! And they need our help! They need to know America is behind them! They need an H&R open thread to channel support. They need us to hang out and make lame jokes online on a Sunday afternoon!
What do you think?

Really not the reaction I was going for
And she kinda scares me. If you watch her in the games, she gets SUPER pissed. Like “I’m gonna break all your shit and torch your car” pissed. Goalkeepers are generally crazy, glad she’s one of ours.
Can't scare anyone as much
As the Brazil team… some of them seriously went against my mental image of Brazilians

she’s def got a touch of crazy…sex would be great, break up might kill you.

Can you imagine if she and Tim Howard got together?
The child would be either the greatest keeper ever….or an axe murderer.

FOOTBALL
Love it!
Premier on ESPN is great.
WORLD CUP…..took me a while to get into it with the girls…….
Summed up my opinion of baseball exactly
I would rather watch paint dry than watch those “athletes” for 6 hours.
However, I plan to be way too drunk to type into an open thread. LA will be shut down for the weekend which presents a perfect opportunity to imbibe some beverages and get sloppily patriotic for the game.
On a related note, my doctor told me today that 10 drinks in one night is “well over binge drinking” and that I should never drink that much or more consecutively.
He graduated from Minnesota.
I have a better idea of what to do with your time this weekend:
You could just fly back and forth from long beach to burbank for cheap with this article my cousin found: JetBlue “car-mageddon” flyovers

When's the match?
I feel compelled to watch both because we’re playing, and to relearn what a World Cup match is like without those damned vuvuzelas.

2:30 Sunday. Reading skills, I lack 'em.

I'm in! err... hopefully.
In-laws are in town this weekend. So, pencil me in. But I’m last on the priority list with the wife when they are in town. Still though – glad to have them. Just don’t know what I’ll be doing or when. I’ll hope to be here on Sunday though with the game up live on TV instead of watching it later on my DVR.
Yesterday though, when my students arrived to their class we had the game on all 3 projectors in the lecture hall from ESPN3… we started watching it from the beginning before class, but then had to take it down when we actually started class. but I sat in the back monitoring the game on my laptop with 2 of the other TAs and we duly informed the class each time a goal was scored. Possibly the best class we’ve had all summer.

Not to get personal
But my job has been extremely shitty lately, and I’ve been fantasizing about “pulling a Rapinoe” and walking out the door. Best quitting ever!
This is an excellent idea.
I am going to abuse my editorial powers and front-page this Sunday. But I think I have to make it myself to do that…not that I’m trying to steal your thunder.

The young Bandsman has the Power
And it will be up on Sunday.

When do I get the power?
Danny Hope calling Pia Sundhage for practice advice isn’t gonna write itself…..
Actually – it very well might.

Dude - I've been researching all morning.
I have a whole catalog lined up for tomorrow – it’s gonna be epic.
The thing I like most about this one is that no one fixed the flag after she did that – they left it torn off the rest of the game.
That's a lot of Rapinoe's...Pretty soon you'll have a whole team!

She's by far my favorite - absolutely cracks me up.
I will be fielding a whole legion of Pinoe’s tomorrow. I am so psyched!

Definitely will be watching
Hope the U.S. wins it, but if there was any country I wouldn’t be unhappy losing to, it would be the Japanese team. They’re all playing for their country in the wake of the tsunami catastrophe, showcasing phenomenal resolve, heart and determination – much like our own U.S. squad.
I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 14 years – a wonderful time in my life….so there’s that too.
Rapinoe coming into the game vs Brazil was the turning point for the U.S. She really started feeding some good passes (some off-target too) and was hussling all over the place during that 2nd half/ extra time. She was sensational, as was Waumbach & Hope.
Should be a great game with either side very deserving, but GO USA !
