For those of you interested in such things Scout's updated Top 100 players list came out.
Derek Willis #42 #13 Power Forward
Kendall Stephens #44 #11 Shooting Guard
Bryson Scott #57 #9 Point Guard
I'd like to point out that Willis and Stephens weren't on the radar much when they committed to Purdue but now they have risen fast up the rankings. Some coaches are kicking themselves for not offering Willis before. Painter gets slack for not getting the five star kids but his future classes are looking mighty good. Did he deserve that big raise? I don't know but he should definitely get a free gym membership or something.

With this class, I’m not even going to worry about the rankings as long as they keep playing well. They are all in ‘crapshoot’ territory where movement is pretty much determined on how they play when they are being watched and where other sites are ranking them. Furthmore, what we know about their character and mentality seemingly give them the intangibles that the baby boilers had. Each of them seem to want to be Boilermakers and are willing to work hard.
Whether they are 96-98 or 10-14, they will make a huge impact at Purdue assuming their commitments stand firm. And there is no reason to think that they won’t. (Yes, that includes the baseless ‘Derek Willis lives in Kentucky and no one can resist their call’ claim. I’d like to petition we retire that comment. A few, among many, reasons include: 1.) If he wanted to go to Kentucky, he could have just waited a few weeks. They were just starting to get interested. 2.) We worry so much about the “big boys” coming but with the talent we have we aren’t that far off. and 3.) Willis dad was pretty adament about making the point, which was volunteered, not fished for, that Derek’s commitment is firm.
Sorry, I started commenting on the rankings it and turned into a rant. My bad.

I am also getting tired of 1) rankings, and 2) talk about UK (or other big name schools) stealing Willis.
For one, ranking is just sooooooooo overrated. People unfairly knocked down on guys like RJ or small dog (Big Dog’s son) or even Willis b/c they weren’t ranked in the Top 100, only to be surprised to see them several months later high up there. They are obsessed with whether the guy is 5-star (say #22) or 4-star (say #28). Really, a lot of these ranking is crapshoot, as Purdue_Pete says. Basil Smotherman went from #26 to #76 in ESPN all of a sudden while Mitch McGary went from #92 to #5 on Rivals. Exactly, crapshoot.
Plus, Derrick Williams is not ranked in the Top 100 and then two years later become the #2 NBA overall pick. Coincidentally, Evan Turner wasn’t as highly rated as Demitri McCamey (they played on the same team) coming into college and guess who is the national POY and #2 NBA overall pick and who went undrafted?
As for Willis, I hate the mentality that the big boy (read: UK) is gonna steal him. It’s like you have a hot girlfriend who all of a sudden becomes the darling in the school, and you start worry about the schools’ QB making a move on her. What an inferior mindset! It is an insult to the girl, and it speaks how low self-confidence you have in yourself. Sure, some girls will go for the popular hot shot, but many won’t. If you are so insecure about your own self then it’s a fault on your own. To the extent that you have that loser mentality it’s no wonder why you can’t hold on to the hot chick in the first place.
Damn, sorry about the ranting. Purdue_Pete just rubs it off on me too ;-)

Surprises
1. #15 and #24 are both four-star players, even though as low as #25 is a five-star.
2. Neither Smotherman nor Alex Foster is in the Top 100
3. Neither Hartman nor Davis (who both decline our scholarship offers and chose IU) is in the Top 100.
I remember at one point seeing both Smotherman and Hartman in the 20s according to ESPN/Rival. Again, this is just showing how fickle these rankings (or stars) could be.
yeah I think this is still kinda wonky
of course they’re going to change a lot but after this July I think they’ll reflect actual talent ranking a little better. Hell, the recent 2012 rankings they put are about the closest thing to what I consider accurate since they started tracking them. 2013 rankings are fun to talk about but until a year and a half from now I wouldn’t put too much into them as valid.
Personally I don’t think there are 41 players better than Willis in the country and I am certain there aren’t 100+ better than Hartman, Davis or Foster. (Smotherman is in the 100 region IMO)
