Notes from Father/Son PURDUE practice.
1. Players and coaches are 100% class.
2. AJ looks like the best athlete on the team. MP said he needs to work on his jumper because he shoots it different every time.
3. TJ working hard.....not chatting with his brother recently. MP says he will play 8 hours a day in pick-up games but needs to shoot 500+ jumpers to be more consistent.
4. RS can flat out stroke it......no kidding! MP, he had almost ZERO TO's in BIG TEN play because he moves the ball quickly and doesn't try to do too much.
5. Sandi was back home in Europe. MP says, he probably won't pick up a ball the entire time he is there. Another player said he DOMINATES all the drills and looks ALL BIG TEN then when 5 on 5 starts he goes into a shell.
6. Bade, this was last weekend so the news had not broken yet. Probably the nicest kid there.
7. Hale/Lawson. MP says they need to gain some weight but will challenge for playing time right away.
8. DJ, MP says he has to hit shots to play this year.
9. MP could not comment on unsigned recruits but was clearly happy with the way things are going.........I would love to read something about Harris into this.........
10. MP says picj and roll is gone.....back to 100% motion offense.
11. MP talked about his recruiting philosophy. Recruit kids who will work hard........in class and on court.
12. MP discussed players leaving. "When i got here we had a bunch of ASSHOLES..........if you are gonna get me 20 & 10 you can be a prick.......but if you get me 6 & 4 you gotta go........

I wasn’t there. Brother and Nephew were there. Not sure how they got invite.
Family has been JP Gold Coats for decades…..6 seats for men and 2 for women.
They did the same drills as the team. A bunch of players were there. MP chatted with the group( I can’t remember if it was 40 total or 40 dads and 40-50 kids).
Just thought some of it was interesting enough to post.
Don't need invite
The father/son camp is every summer:

I’ve heard it’s outstanding, one day I’ll take my son…
Thx for the post
“4. RS can flat out stroke it……no kidding! MP, he had almost ZERO TO’s in BIG TEN play because he moves the ball quickly and doesn’t try to do too much.”
Is MP a typo there?
MP said that, about Ryno
paraphrased, that is

MP really said this?
“……….if you are gonna get me 20 & 10 you can be a prick”
This doesn't sound good
“MP says, he (Sandi) probably won’t pick up a ball the entire time he is there. "
not everybody can be Dirk, I guess

Barlow
I hear it is going well with Kelsey…….his family is totally on board with what MP asking him to do.
Smith/MP. My brother was really impressed with his shooting in comparison to TJ and AJ. I was told Painter commented on Smith and his lack of turnovers.
Sandi…..good to hear him dominate drills……..sad to think he has that kind of talent but isn’t a basketball junky………
MP and the 20/10 prick……….I was told this word for word……..I asked if he mentioned Spates or Minnoy…..but was told he didn’t say a specific player.
I have heard the story of Spates and MP having it out in practice. This is first hand……..will check for details and report back.
Cool, thx
Everything sounds great – except I am still disappointed with Sandi, who should really kick up a notch now that Bade is gone but he is not even touching the basketball for the summer?! What happens to MP’s recruiting philosophy to get players who WORK HARD??
Sandi
I’m with you on being disappointed with Sandi’s development. Physically he is as athletic a big man as there is in the Big Ten but he just can’t seem to be able to translate his athletic ability to the basketball court. He moves really well for a big man so if he could figure out how to use that to his advantage he could be a quality player. The coaching staff needs to figure out a way to make him feel more confident about his game. He could be a big piece of the puzzle this year.
Summer Vacation
Trying to remember the exact quote. I think he is home for 2 weeks……….not the entire summer.
MP said there are kids like JJ who are in the gym constantly working on his game……then there is Sandi, who won’t pick up a ball the entire time he is home.
I still hold out hope he it will CLICK for him.
As far as MP recruiting him and being a non hard worker. He was a last second big that was rated pretty high…..15th best C in the nation? This is why I am excited going forward…….we are recruiting from a position of strength…..not desperation.
haha. ok. that makes a lot more sense.
If he was going to be in Europe the entire summer and not do anything, then he wouldn’t be worthy of a scholarship. but if it’s just a couple weeks… that’s ok. not great, but acceptable.
