Mildly interesting tidbit...

I'm in the process of writing a piece evaluating the different school options for Gary Harris. Instead of evaluating the established criteria myself, I am engaging bloggers from each team to help so that I have a more accurate (and subjectively objective) overview from "experts" themselves.

I started with just getting overall thoughts on their team's recruitment of Harris. Here is a paraphrase of what I have gathered thus far.

IU - Feels confident if they had the room they should be able to land him, but it's likely they won't have any attrition by the time Harris will decide.

MSU - While the wings shouldn't be top priority, Harris is a talent MSU has been lacking. But feels IU and Louisville are in the best shape with ND & Purdue behind the top 3.

Kentucky - GH has been speaking with different assistant coaches, but he's currently 3rd priority (behind Archie Goodwin and Recardo Ledo). DSR and Terry Henderson are also targets but have not been offered.

I am still anxiously waiting to hear Louisville and ND's perspective, although I am not sure there are any legitimate ND bloggers out there.

But on a side note, as I survey the experts of various schools it's becoming more and more abundant that a.) no one feels confident that they'll land him and b.) no one really knows anything.

Just thought it was interesting and worth sharing...

So consider this a teaser to a big collaborative post on Gary Harris and his options. It might be a ways out since I have to work around other blogger's schedules and if Harris is in no hurry, why should I?

The only reason I have confidence is when we had no spots. GH was still publicly saying Purdue was still a frontrunner. Now, we have the room and my confidence continues to increase. Especially with his mother’s influence leaning towards what i can assume is Purdue.

If I'm Gary Harris.....

I figure I got one, maybe two years of college ball before I move on to the NBA. If everything else is basically equal, I want to make sure that I choose the program that has the best chance of reaching FF’s or possibly an NC while I’m there. That’s why I don’t believe IU is a player here. ND either. Based on that criterion, IMO, his list in order is: MSU, Louisville, Purdue. The one wildcard here is his parents affiliation with Purdue. I know they have said all along that this will not play a factor in his decision, but, at the end of the day, it has to play a role. I still think we’re the underdog but there is an opportunity to make up ground before his decision.

by Hummel's figurines on Jun 30, 2011 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

To believe that IU isn’t a player is simply to ignore reporting that displeases you. That’s fine. We all do it at times. To be clear, I don’t expect Harris to go to IU because I don’t think he’s willing to be the oversign and I don’t see how IU will end up with an open scholarship within the next four months. But it’s pretty obvious that IU is a factor and that Harris likes IU and Crean.

I think Painter is a really good coach and that Purdue’s future is very bright, but I don’t think someone who isn’t heavily invested in the program would think that Final Fours and national titles are inevitable at Purdue. Izzo has a title and 6 Final Fours; Pitino has a title and 5 Final Fours; Painter has a couple of Sweet 16s. As I said, I like and respect Painter, and further believe that the jury is still out on Crean. That said, Crean has been to the Final Four as a head coach and coaches at a school with a long history of Final Four appearances and NCAA titles, so the line with MSU/UL/Purdue on one side and IU/ND on the other side may not be as clear to others as it is to you.

Yeah....

Until Crean proves that he can win on the road in the Big Ten, IU won’t even be making the dance.

Unless you're wearing edible panties?

That might be hard to swallow. Listen, anything said concerning GH’s final destination is pure speculation. Nobody knows jack. Hell, I don’t think he knows yet. I was simple stating an opinion that a large factor in his decision may be his perceived potential success of the programs he’s considering. If you accept that premise (and you don’t have to), a ranked order of MSU, Louisville, PU, IU & ND makes sense to me based on recent success and rosters going into 2012. That’s today. A lot can change between now and decision time.

If Final Fours aren't inevitable

I guess we shouldn’t try. Painter is going into season 7 at Purdue, and if not for the Hummel injury it is very possible he has a Final Four or even two by now.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I said. I’m not sure how I could have been more complimentary to Painter in that comment. I would be surprised if he doesn’t get to one or more Final Fours before he’s done, but clearly he doesn’t rank with Pitino and Izzo right now.

TMill I love Hammer & Rails and your excellent coverage of all things Purdue is a service to the University and its alums (myself included). However….

We need to retire the whole “If Hummel hadn’t gotten hurt, we would have <Made at least one Final Four | Won at least one National Championship | Exploded into pure energy from our own awesomeness>” meme. We need to judge our program based on what we’ve accomplished and where the program is headed, irrespective of these fuzzy hypotheticals. Because the fact is that we have a lot to be proud of already, and the goal never changes (National Championship). But despite the fact that we haven’t reached it yet we can clearly see that MP has built this program to the point where we can say that it’s a realistic one.

I hate excuses (i.e. the “Robbie card”). This year’s Kansas is as good a team as we would have with two lottery NBA draft picks and a supposedly #1-ranked frosh coming in – did they go to FF? Heck, they were even in the same region as us in the NCAA Tournament. My point is, while with Robbie everything looks GREAT (on paper), we could have just as easily crap out like Kansas. (Some says it right, as Purdue fans, we’ve just seen TOO MANY times we lost the “should’ve” games.) So stop giving ourselves any excuses. Look forward!

by charlespig on Jun 30, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing is inevitable

Gene Keady never goes to a FF, but can we say he might have as well stopped trying?

Just appreciate the hard work and effort that the coaches and players put in, and accept whatever outcomes there is, can we? Painter always says, you can only worry what you can control, and you can always control your attitude and effort. Nothing is certain and nothing is inevitable.

I picked MSU

but I sure hope he picks the Boilers. I know people at IU always say how much Etherington (?) was a big ‘recruiter’ for them, and I’m wondering if RJ or anyone else is trying to ‘recruit’ Harris. (I’m not one to go follow tweets and get on facebook pages of these kids, etc…)

by jffiv on Jun 30, 2011 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

Harris is at a Purdue camp right now...

according to Brian Neubert on the GoldandBlack Twitter feed.

Basil Smotherman tweeted this to G.H.: “Go ahead and verbal while ur down there!!”

Can’t hurt to have other players pushing him to commit. Don’t know how much it will help but you never know.

And yes, I have too much free time at the moment.

by Boylemaker88 on Jun 30, 2011 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

x2, Amen to that!

I want him to come here b/c he wants to come here, b/c he wants to play hard, b/c he wants to learn from a great coach who’s gonna push him to become a better player. Exactly, grow up, and make a decision for himself and take the responsibillity of whatever outcomes.

but it helps to know you have teammates that want you as well… I want him to feel wanted so that he wants to be here!

Yeah

I didn’t mean I want him to commit because he felt pressure from other players. I just meant that it can’t hurt having guys he plays with pulling for him to go to Purdue. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Tweet action going on between GH and RJ

I follow both of them and recently they’ve been tweeting back and forth specifically about being at the Purdue camp. Harris and RJ have played together before and are friends from what I understand. Hopefully, RJ can help the Boilers land Harris.

Actually, any time there's a 5-star recruit...

…where both Purdue and MSU fight for, you’ll hear it. Sad but true. The “every 4-year-MSU player will have gone to at least one FF” is a really sweet sell to those guys.

by charlespig on Jul 5, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Hummel's figurines already list the reasons above

He says the frontrunners are MSU, PU, IU, Louisville, and ND. I think we can drop ND for him. There is just no room at IU, so let’s drop that.

Now among MSU, PU and Louisville, MSU seems to be the best fit. They have very solid frontcourt recruits, whereas Purdue has a bunch of guards/wings but no bigs. At MSU, he will be playing big minutes at the backcourt, whereas at PU, he doesn’t have a big to take the pressure off him. Look, he pairs up with a solid big in the Nike camp and their team won the championship, I am guessing he’ll notice how much more fun it is when someone on your team will rebound your miss to give you another chance.

Lastly, I think the Dawson experience just hits us so bad that we are now fearful of Izzo on every recruit we love that has not verbally committed to us.

by charlespig on Jun 30, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see MSU's bigs being much better than ours

To me, MSU doesn’t seem like such a desirable place with all of the drama they’ve had in the past year.

I don’t think there’s enough evidence to say “he’s definitely going to MSU”

by Danulas on Jun 30, 2011 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

You kidding me about MSU bigs?

Izzo knows the pick-up game rule: always pick the guy who can grab a lot of rebounds.

2011: Dawson
2012: A 6-9 C (score 95), 6-7 PF (score 94) and 6-5 SF (score 93) according to ESPN, and adding a SG like GH will be an awesome foursome class

Now compared that to us: a 6-9 PF (score 91), a 5-10 PG (score 92) and a 6-4 SG (score 93), don’t you think we have an excess of 6-5 and under while he’ll be the perfect piece to the MSU’s puzzle?

by charlespig on Jul 5, 2011 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

No room? I would be shocked, SHOCKED

if lack of a spot ends of having anything to do with Harris not picking Indiana. Crean has already seemed absolutely willing to be over-committed, even pushing things by taking Remy Abell. None of this has appeared to dissuade GH yet at all. I would bet you that there is an available place for Gary Harris at IU in 2012 if he wants it. Indiana will have attrition, one way or another.

It is possible that picking IU pushes Harris into the late signing period if Indiana is still over by two. As a matter of fact, I think Harris’ ambiguous statements about the lack of urgency in his timetable and possibility of deciding late suggests that he might be thinking of doing exactly that. I voted Indiana.

he's the one guy that if he wants to be in Bloomington

he will be in Bloomington. Currently we can sign everyone that is committed. If Harris wants in he’d have to wait to see how things hash out. The willingness of guys like Jordan Hulls to pay their own way for their last year makes it plausible to make room if it is needed. Also if Watford has a semi-decent year I can see him trying out the draft waters. He has a very projectable body and style for the NBA (not saying he’s that caliber yet) but his skill set would make him a viable early flight risk.

Is that even legal?

Isn’t there some kind of rule about going off scholarship and still playing the same year?

by JFranchise on Jul 6, 2011 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

nope happens all the time

there is a rule against switching scholarships. You can’t have a football scholly and then get a basketball scholly and still play football that year. You are however more than welcome to try and walk on.

Another example would be walk-ons who get a scholarship for a year and then lose it the next.

That’s because we have underlings to do data entry for us. Kidding, of course. I’m no better than AJ. On the rare occasions I have to make a spreadsheet, I generally have to find an existing one and delete all of the data. Still, the fact that I know what Excel is actually puts me ahead of most members of my profession.

MISSED FF

With #4 healthy you can argue we reach 1 or 2 FF. I know we are a 1 seed his junior year and BIG 10 CO-CHAMPS this year at least and another 1 seed.

As a long time PURDUE fan here are the top 10 FF misses.

1. Hummel 2010 INDY……..BUTLER V PURDUE?
2. Hummel 2011 HOUSTON HELLO!
3. 1988 Scheffler is so freaked out he can’t even play! Mitch Richmond banks in 3 from top of key………….sorry I passed out from stress/anger………
4. Cornell rolls ankle……thanks Lewis(IU). PURDUE was crushing teams……..Brad Miller, Brian Cardinal, Mike Robinson, Chad Austin………Cornell never came back and the BOILERS lost to a pretty good STANFORD team.
5. 1979 FU PURDUE BIG TEN TRI-CHAMPS don’t get a ticket to the dance. Fellow BIG TEN CHAMP SPARTY wins it all….PURDUE plays IU in NIT FINAL.
6. 1984 Congrats on BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP……your reward……..you play MEMPHIS STATE at MEMPHIS STATE!
7. 1980 For once the NCAA hooked us up with 2 home games…….now we lose in FF to CHEATERS UCLA!
8. 1986? Play at LSU and lose in 3 OT to eventual FF team.
9. 1990? Lose to TEXAS and Penders…….still hard to say. It was like playing in BLOOMINGTON…….Mayes from HORNS sets an NCAA REGIONAL record for FT’s 22 I think. Makes 2 with seconds on the clock on a PHANTOM FOUL. Tony Jones gets blocked at the rim as the buzzer sounds…..pretty clean…..but more contact than Mayes play……which isn’t saying much.
10. 1969 PURDUE 7 footer Chuck Bavis hurts shoulder. Lew Alcinder goes off…..

BOOK IT!

by charlespig on Jun 30, 2011 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

you are right.....

BIG DOG has a bad back and PURDUE loses to hated DUKE!

Cardinal run was awesome……sucked to lose to Badgers when we couldn’t their white SG off screens.

by PURDUE7 on Jul 1, 2011 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Well done 7....

the ’69 and ’80 teams should have nailed down a title….just no excuse for losing the ’80 title IMO. The injury to Bavis was truly the deciding factor in ’69, but also the fact that Rick Mount had one of his worst shooting games of all time.

The ‘88 team should have at least been in the FF, but believe they thought they’d steamroll a K-State team they had pounded earlier in the year….but, like you say,…Mitch had everything falling for him in that game.

That loss was not quite as bitter (to me) as the 2000 loss to Wisky, which I think just absolutely crushed Gene and really led to his downward spiral IMO. I remember that almost ALL the national media were making a huge deal of Gene finally looking like he’d make his first FF….and then ………..poof.

Gene 2000

I had heard from a few insiders connected up to Burke that he was looking to push/ease Keady out until that magical run in 2000.

K STATE: They actually had a pretty solid team. Henson at PG was a soph I think……played in the NBA. Mitch….HOF. I think they had a big named McCoy who was solid and a SG named Willy Scott? Whoever Lewis guarded had a big game…I think it was Scott. PURDUE jumps out 10 ZIP and you start thinking FF!

1980 I was at that game…….Edmonson, Walker, Hallman, Scearce……JBC……..Drake Morris?

by PURDUE7 on Jul 4, 2011 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

You're probably right about Gene

Perhaps he was planning on leaving after that Final Four IF he had made it with that team.

And yeah, KState had a solid team – but we still should’ve beat them IMO. Our mistakes late in the game, combined with their shooting % really did us in. After that 10-0 start, I think the team started thinking FF as well. Ooops.

As the the 1980 squad, the Walker brothers were on that team ( I just couldn’t stand Steve – he always seemed to lose the ball at critical moments) with Brian and Rosey Barnes at guard. Kevin Stallings was on the team, as was Jon Kitchel.

I think if we had Sichting one more year (after ’79) it would have made a huge difference in that Final Four run – he was a solid PG. Scooby Scearce and Hallman were fun to watch, as was Drake and Keith.

I went to every home game that year except the Michigan St game ( of course ! ) and remember the crowd being the loudest I’ve ever heard it for the Sunday game of the week against Syracuse. Dick Enberg, Al McGuire and Billy Packer could hardly talk the first couple of minutes they were on live because the crowd was deafening.

I was sure it was going to be a Syracuse-Purdue rematch for the championship that year, but Iowa actually knocked out the Orangemen on their way to the FF. Sure was fun watching us knock off Duke and IU in the Regionals.
