Ronnie Johnson ranked #93 by Scout (4 Stars)

I guess people are starting to take notice?

Good to see

Simpson nowhere on that list though?

by Boylemaker88 on May 4, 2011 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

Simpson got hosed

He’s having the best AAU season of his life and he is not ranked? I don’t like scout rankings, he should move up in the rivals ones.

Recruits tend to drop in ratings a bit after they have commited

the rankings system is still a business that has to generate discussion and interest. Notice that only 5 of the top 25 are committed anywhere. I think at the end of the summer after the AAU season has come to a close and the Scout/Rivals/ESPN people get a chance to see mostly everyone, you’ll get a more accurate list.

Their cases are different.

Simpson has been known about for a while and he committed in 2009, so his ranking hasn’t changed much. He never received any other offers because he’s wanted to play at Purdue for a long time. Ronnie, on the other hand, didn’t start performing at this level until the 2011 playoffs.

the rankings came out a day after the commitment

doubt they changed anything.

they also list him at 5'9"

i guess the other outlets list him at 5’10" – but damn that’s short

But taller than LewJack, right?

by bresch on May 4, 2011 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

RJ

I think we got a steal!

He is at least as quick as Lewjack and taller and longer.
He has a decent 3 point shot that he can pump fake……….like he needs a half step to get into the lane in HS.
He has quick hands……..in the few games I watched he stripped player going up for jumpers multiple times.
He is left handed……always makes it tougher to guard.
He is almost all left hand when he drives, but is so quick it doesn’t matter.

If he can get stronger like his brother, work on his right hand…….and refine his stroke he is a threat to start as a freshman.

ILLINI fans seem to think he is a bench player for PURDUE and would have had more playing time there.

I agree with most of this...

But don’t expect RJ to put on the type of weight that TJ carries. Terone has a different body type and was very developed even as a sophomore.

RJ Body type

Yea, I totally agree. I am hoping he can put on 10 pounds of muscle. Terone is a strong Safety and Ronnie is a WR.

#63 on the list - Wannah Bail

Coaches should consider any committment by this young man to be ‘soft’.

C’mon mom and dad – what the hell?

Richard Chew

was a small college national champ in track for Indiana Central (now U of Indy) in the late 70’s. A true ‘boy named Sue’, he took crap from no one.

BTW, Indiana is listed as one of Bail’s target schools.

I assume Jurkin is prononuced with a phonetic “J” like the act, rather than “G” like the pickle. You’re right – pretty horrible.

Actually, I’m told it is pronounced as a phonetic “Y” (“Yerkin”). Jurkin was born in Sudan, so I would guess that his parents didn’t consider the implications of American slang when they named him.

OK - Jurkin's folks are off the hook

Do you have any background regarding the naming of Wannah Bail?

Makes sense - I'm sure the Paint Crew will totally understand

Great article about Bryson

Check out this article on GBI: http://purdue.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1219500
I really like how Bryson sounds in this article. Also, anyone know anything about Rapheal’s knee surgery? That makes three commits that aren’t playing right now due to injuries (Davis, Stephens, Molock)

legacy?
Harris, after his first game at Spiece, reiterated that his recruitment is open.

The 6-4 blue-chipper and Purdue legacy said the Boilermaker coaching staff continues to recruit him heavily.

Hadn’t heard this before? Was this common knowledge? Anyone have an inside source at Twin City Dodge with more info?

His mom played basketball

It’s fairly common knowledge that his mom was a standout on the women’s basketball team. What might not be quite so common knowledge was how good she was, but a simple google search of Joy Holmes provides some pretty good details. She played in the late 80s and early 90s, eventually earning All-American honors, Big Ten Player of the year honors, and induction into the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame.

You could argue......

….she is a top 5 all time player at PURDUE.

Her and Machelle Joseph got the program rolling.

Pretty sure she ended career as all time steals leader.

Rivals

Rivals had a nice review of some future Boilers from the AAU tournament this past weekend in Ft. Wayne. Here is what they had to say:

Ronnie Johnson, PG, Eric Gordon Central Stars- It was a wise move by Matt Painter and Purdue to lock Johnson up. The 5-foot-10 lefty is tough, makes plays and is steady on each end of the floor. It’s one thing to be fast, but it’s another to be fast and under control and Johnson is. His shooting isn’t bad either. Will certainly be in the discussion for the soon to be updated 2012 Rivals150.

Purdue commitment Jay Simpson is a big and strong kid. The power forward is also pretty good facing the hoop and setting himself up to score. His game will really open up as he uses his strength to more advantage around the rim.

This was all I could read for free but I like what I am reading. Now that Smith-Rivera is gone I think Ronnie will really have an opportunity to be a leader and key contributor at North Central next year. Looks like Ronnie is starting to get some love from the recruiting services. Jay Simpson seems to be coming into his own and should be a nice player for us in the future. Does anybody actually have access to the insider articles? There is an article about Gary Harris and all the early commits in Indiana and I’d be curious what it had to say.
