UPDATED ESPN 2012, 2013 rankings

Espn updated their rankings for basketball today and some boilers made some very big moves. For 2012 Rapheal Davis comes in at 72 and Ronnie Johnson at 89. Jay Simpson who is ranked in the top 100 of scout's and rivals is still ranked a 4 star by espn but fell out of the top 100.

2013 class starts with Derek Willis jumping all the way up to 20 just falling short of a 5 star ranking. Kendall stephens jumped to 35, Bryson Scott is at 53 and Basil Smotherman is 61. All of 4 star guys.

Hopefully everyone keeps working to get better.

Also of note IU recruits for 2012/13 generally fell in the rankings.

No doubt!

If Smotherman is our worst recruit for 2013 we are in fabulous shape! Basil is deff. a top 100 guy and he is a great player. He’s the only one Ive seen play in person and he was awesome and the other guys in 2013 are ranked ahead of him! Bright future for boilers basketball!

Only 8 in the Super 60 are committed

3 of the 8 are coming to Purdue. Very very cool to see. I still say Willis could be a top 5 guy when it’s all said and done, but he could also drop some too there is no way to know. But his ceiling…. geez….

Willis's

ceiling is incredible! He’ll get bigger and he has good ball handling skills and can knock down NBA threes.

Also...

IU has 2 top 25 guys for 2014 including Lyles who got moved up to 5th. We are going to see some good basketball between these two teams pretty soon.

recruits

I realize IU has tons of talent on the way……..and this might worry some PURDUE fans.

I am still waiting to see TC coach em up……..waiting to see a player improve(don’t give me Hulls……he would improve on his own) .
Now that MP has the recruiting turned around after some heart breakers……he can go after kids he knows will buy into the PURDUE WAY.
Hard work, academics, team play……

He also seems to have issues evaluating talent

Crean’s players for 2012 and 2013 are falling in the rankings (both Yogi and Hanner were 5 star, now 4 stars), and the 2 kids from 2013 are now unranked. The Purdue players are moving up the board. IMO Clappy the Clown gets the rankings report and recruits those guys. I mean, he can’t coach so what makes us think he can evaluate players?!? Matt and his staff assess the talent on their own then makes them offers. Then the experts take notice and recognize, DAMN these guys are good. BOOK IT!!!

Player Attitude

I’m not saying this is the reason why IUs guys fell, but I think the reason our recruits are on the rise (in most cases) is the type or mentality that Painter goes after. They are all kids who are going to work their butts off on and off the court.

You're absolutely right.

RJ quickly went from being relatively unknown to a top-100 guy.

Also, the fact that Derek Willis made such a huge jump already gives me a lot of hope for this guy.

The one downside to this

Derek did go from unknown to breakout player based upon just one AAU tournament. I know some of the IU guys were ranked high early, but the more exposure the less impressive they became. Same could happen as we are talking about sophomores.

good point

Hanner Perea was 15 at one point and he’s settled in at 49 in the new ESPN rankings. I don’t think Willis is quite as good as currently advertised but he’s still a top 50 guy from the videos I’ve seen.

That's just it

People on blogs go by videos yet act like they know if a kid is ranked too high or too low. Wouldn’t surprise me if the guys at Scout, Rivals, etc., get little exposure to each kid except the alpha dogs. Everyone else is just ranked to promote conversations and website page views to sell ad space. I know Matt PAinter has had one 4 start recruit in the last 3 classes (2008-2011) and they were still pretty good. The 2012-2013 classes have seven 4 star recruits. I can’t image what he could do with “great recruits”.

Trust in Painter

He knew what was possible with him before anyone else apparently, and Derek has progressed as he envisioned, maybe better. You can only hope he continues to work his a@@ off, but I don’t see him slipping because of his family.

bad thing is

matt will have keep recruiting the guys already committed. You knoe calipari wld have no prob pulling an iu & recruit guys who have committ elsewhere

2013 is a long ways away.

If it was just one kid (i.e. Brandon Dawson) I'd be worried,

but these guys are probably talking to each other now, and getting excited about being part of something special.

I would hope so

this should be one bad-ass group – especially considering they’ll be playing with upperclassmen like Hale, Lawson, Davis, Johnson, Johnson….. Would also hope that the guys Matt P targets aren’t the type of guys who are interested in Calipari’s river of dirty money

Feeling good about 2013

Stephens: Gotta be a near lock. Everette has stayed close to program. Kay is a PURDUE grad and local girl who still has relatives in town.

Willis: Judging by comments from him and parents. They didn’t like arrogant coaches from UK, UL, IU…….. I have no inside info on this just guessing.
1. Asst Coaches trashed PURDUE instead of selling their school.
2. Asst Coaches bragged about 1 and done players.
3. Asst Coaches did small things to disrespect family…….showed up late…..didn’t return calls……forgot someone name…..
4. Asst Coaches: Acted like they were doing Derek a favor by recruiting him.
5. Asst Coaches promised things the parents knew they couldn’t deliver. Both parents played college hoops so they know the truth about recruiting.

Scott. No inside info but does a healthy Mollock and the now BLOWING UP RJ affect him? Does someone get to him like SPARTY did Dawson? I still can’t believe Dawson was worried about having to play inside at PURDUE! Did they show him Scheffler videos? Where do JJ and Robbie play? Where do most of their shots come from? MP runs a motion/passing offense. In this offense a player/scorer like Scott can play any guard spot.

Smotherman: His dad got pushed out at his old school. NC and RJ here they come! He has slid down the rankings……which you hope will motivate him to work even harder.

by PURDUE7 on May 25, 2011 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

Scott, Molock, RJ

RJ is the pure point guard here, the LewJack of the future but taller and a better shooter.
Scott is more like Steve Francis, shoots and drives real well. Can play the 2
Molock is a combo of the two.

Any 2 of these kids can play on the court at the same time, and I think that is fantastic news.

PS: Scott comitted verbally, Dawson never did. And Dawson wanted to be a swingman, and not as much a post presence like Painter said he would be here.

Also, what is with the Willis guessing? He comitted because he liked the coaching staff and the academics. It doesn’t always need to be about someone else f*cking it up.
