New Cheers for Purdue (anybody in the Paint Crew please respond)

I know this is off topic from the anti Jim Burr slaughter fest but this was something that popped into my mind.  I'm a big fan of the college sports atmosphere and the various cheers that each school comes up with.  I think it's more of the fact that when EVERYBODY participates in a cheer the whole arena and electricity is much more hostile. Not that I think Mackey isn't hostile, but I do think it's cool that there is a nice connect between fans (students, alumni, and sub-alums) where they say one phrase and another fan can finish the phrase.  From Penn State (We are Penn State), to OSU (OH-IO), to MSU (Go Green, Go White) to  Illinois  (ILL-INI; my gf, ex gf was an Illini fan, I thought the cheer was cool and I still do) to Missouri (MIZ-ZOU) to Kansas ("Rock Chalk Jayhawk, KU")... I think it adds a special "goosebump" factor to the game.  I look at Purdue and I feel like all our cheers are clapping cheers and it's Paint Crew dominated ("Boiler up! clap clap", "Let's go Boilers" clap clap, clap clap clap).  It just feels like it has  a very high school sense to it and the whole crowd doesn't really get into it. I think to add some mystique to your university and program, you need something a phrase that connects fans together like the afore mentioned. After the jump here are some cheers that I think that would work wonderfully at Purdue.

Star-divide

"Time To Play Hard": First off this pays homage to Coach Keady and former Boilers along with the clock that hangs above the tunnel with the words "Time to Play Hard "over it.    Heck, even the players' practice shorts has the phrase "Play Hard" on them. I'm surprised we haven't incorporated that chant before.  Just think if we had this going before starting lineups or before the 2nd half began with one side of Mackey was chanting "Time to..." and the other side was chanting " Play Hard". Please tell me that wouldn't get you fired up.

"Defense Lives Here": Pays homage to the sign that the paint crew has.  Purdue prides itself on defense, that's what everybody says that we are relentless and in your face and are tough on D.  Not that we usually need to be hyped up on defense but seriously how bad would that be again if one side of Mackey was chanting "Defense" and the other side was chanting "lives here".  That would be our calling card, and I think that would be an amazing chant.

"Boiler Up, Hammer Down": I've seen this on some of the readers taglines while reading their comments.  I think this is an intriguing cheer because I think it brings two generations of Boiler fans together (PreTiller and Post Tiller).  I assume "Hammer Down" was a cheer used back in the day and we all know "Boiler Up!" has been the main cheer on campus since the late 90's. This is a cheer that could be used at Ross-Ade.  I'm not sure how good this chant would be... but it's a shot.

"Boiler-makers":  Simple yet awesome. This could be used to scream before the teams run out of the tunnels or just to get hyped.  I was at Lucas Oil Stadium for the FF open shoot around and I loved when Sparty was practicing and their fans were screaming "Go Green, Go White".  I was jealous, not only because they were at the FF but because it seemed like it had an awesome sense of fan pride.  "Boilermakers" would be a fun cry to shout whenever we do make the Final Four open practices and night football games as well.  Same thought process as before with one side screams "Boiler" other side screams "Makers" and repeat.

So there you have it, some more cheer options that I feel like Purdue can use to make our environment have "chill factors".  Thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.  Later days

Another tradition I think would be cool to add:

One of my favorite sports traditions of all time is the Blackhawks national anthem. If you’ve never seen it, the entire arena cheers as loudly as possible for the entire anthem. It dates back to the first gulf war, when it began spontaneously the night combat operations began.

"Hey Jay, what time is it?"
"9:30"
"AND IU STILL SUCKS!"

yeah I've seen that before...it's really awesome

I would like to see that happen, I dunno if that would ever happen because many people may think it’s disrespectful… although I think it’s awesome it shows love to the song (it also lowers the pressure of the singer while performing….)

Love this idea and think it would be perfect at Purdue

Another consideration is doing “I Am An American” at basketball games – that would be huge!

if you look at the demographics of Mackey arena, there isn’t much hope for something like the Blackhawks

I'm sold

I agree, these cheers. Now its on the students to implement them; as far as one side yelling to the other at games, it will be easier when the students are split up like it will be starting next year

I agree...

although splitting up the Paint Crew will take away from the noise factor… it does allow for these chants to be more effective. Hopefully the other fans will get into it as well…but I think if more alumni keep coming back with these cheers implemented… it will likely become a common thing.

Just for the record, I HATE WITH A BURNING PASSION the idea of splitting the Paint Crew.

It’s going to destroy the energy that the mass of students brings, all so Burke can sell a few more lower bowl seats. What a whore.

gotta make the best of it

yeah I’m not a fan of it…and I think the only other student section in the big ten that will be split up will be IU… (not sure about Nebraska’s student section; but fancy that… we’re with IU in that way). But still I believe there are some fans that would get rowdy with the split paint crew and go wild! However I do think Burke sold out… yet again

Whose House? Our House!

That will be bad ass with the split Paint Crew at least.

Also on the positive side of it...

there will be students on both sides of the court distracting the opponents, not just the second half.

I have always loved the Utah State I believe that we will win cheer,

it really brings the crowd into the game and it would be awesome to see the Paint Crew do it.. heres the link if you don’t know what it is.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44YUnOoye58

yeah I saw that too

I know the Naval academy does that too when it comes to football. Some High schools do that as well. It’s a cool chant though I agree.

Cool but,

it’s pretty generic. I’d prefer a chant that was uniquely Purdue.

Understandable

Nobody says that these cheers will replace Boiler Up (or Cowboy Up revised)… but even you have to admit that only the students use those phrases… I’m just trying to see if there was a way to get all the fans all into it. I do appreciate your opinion though… I figured it wouldn’t jive well with everybody. Maybe in 20 years this will be moot because the new JPC members will be people who grew up only with the Boiler Up! chant. But i just think it’s like a plain generic chant right now. I dunno. oh well. Thanks for your opinion again PurdueMatt…

by H Dot Jones on Feb 6, 2011 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

how would you implement it?

in order to get the entire crowd in on it, you’d need to give the cheerleaders signs, sorta like the football games.

by sammyboilermakr on Feb 6, 2011 10:02 AM EST reply actions

Yeah... that's what I've been trying to think of

That’s part of it… and it seems like the cheerleaders don’t really have that much of an impact when it comes to the cheers. It’s pretty much solely on the fans to make the cheers legendary though. Just a thought…

To your call once more we rally...

by H Dot Jones on Feb 6, 2011 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know...

I really don’t care for the 2 sided cheers. I’ve been to several NC State sporting events, and they have a “Wolf”…“Pack” cheer and I think it’s just tacky. They also become muddled and off a lot more easily if you don’t have a single coordinator. At a football field I think they work, but not for basketball

by aclockwo on Feb 6, 2011 11:53 AM EST reply actions

thanks for your comment

and you may be right…I think all I want is for EVERYBODY to cheer at a game

To your call once more we rally...

by H Dot Jones on Feb 6, 2011 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Do we really?

Do we really need to become like every other program and steal then adapt their cheers? Just like Shout during football games….I find it very lame. If we are going to steal anything, it should be Wisconsin’s Jump Around. And if we start any chants in which we spell words I will start shooting.

by teneeley on Feb 6, 2011 1:01 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I, too, hate the spelling cheers...

But I hate all the clapping cheers as well (especially when it is just in this formula, two – two syllable words + clap clap, clap clap clap.) I want more original cheers.

I like the Boiler Up! Hammer Down! I’ve been saying this for at least two years now. I’m also a Bears fan, though, so that is why I incorporated “Hammer Down”!

2010 Big Ten Champs, Baby!

by JuJuan some Moore? on Feb 6, 2011 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

I'd be also fine with just "Go Boilers"

If everybody did it… but even “Boiler Up” wasn’t original in the sense of the chant. I don’t like spelling chants for Purdue… because it doesn’t fit us… but I do think there can be more added to the atmosphere. I just thought it was worth investigating

They are splitting up the Paint Crew next year

We’ll be on both ends of the court after the renovations are done (though we do end up losing seats in the lower bowl thanks to the new tunnel). Boiler Up is a great cheer, especially at the football games. Case in point: Ohio State game last year when OSU got a 4th down when Pryor was sacked right at the end of the game and right before he threw up a Hail Mary that got knocked down by Pender to practically seal the upset (the face mask committed by OSU ultimately sealed the deal, yay karma!).

I remember everyone in Black and Purdue’s 10,000 shades of gold did the Boiler Up chant after that 4th down, it still gives me the chills to this day reliving the moment in my head.

I think the one chant you forgot to mention is the “WHOSE HOUSE? OUR HOUSE!” chant. Purdue is officially famous for it thanks to College GameDay. That chant is going to be BAD ASS when they split the Paint Crew next year. I can hear more people are chanting it along with the Paint Crew during the intro video and right before the team comes out on the court.

Also

Just sent this to the Paint Crew President, just an FYI

by btfu_crespo on Feb 6, 2011 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

thanks crespo

I never have heard “Whose House Our house” in person (it does sound like Duke’s “our house” cheer) only on TV… so I’ll take your word on it that it’s pretty awesome

If everybody screamed Boiler Up! like that Ohio State game… I probably wouldn’t have written this post… lol.

So maybe I’m just saying… EVERYBODY GET LOUD…add the chill factor to Purdue…lol

Whose house is more for those at the game.

It’s not a TV cheer. It’s for the team and for the Paint Crew to get hyped up. And it is epic, believe me.

"Hey Jay, what time is it?"

At GameDay

The crew asked the Paint Crew to chant it during the opening of the show, they preferred it over “Boiler Up!” (and IU Sucks, Digger’s 2nd favorite behind “Tear it Up”, case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F_g4u_oQao Big Daddy in the House), so we are know for it.

I keep kind of going back to football and the Ohio State game, but last year at the Ohio State game during the 3rd down song that the band does (theme from Jaws), we started chanting “KILL!” every fist pump/boiler up motion we do. It has caught on (thanks to our signs at some of the games and the people around us passing it on). I watched a replay of the Minnesota game and you can hear it on TV, though you can’t make it out unless you know it. I hope it catches on and becomes something permanent for football season.

Or incorporate the Train

I sent a message off to the Paint Crew president before Gameday (to no avail, I’ve heard nothing back) about a potentially epic cheer. While it would probably be limited to the Paint Crew and splitting us will kill it off, I still like it enough to comment it here.

Here’s the idea: As Boilermakers, we have the largest and more unique mascot in college sports – the Boilermaker Special (anyone else have a mascot that drives itself to road games? That’s what I thought). So why don’t we utilize the uniqueness of the train? Imagine if we got the entire student section to mimic an oncoming train. Not only that, but time it to where it starts up top and spreads down, making the noise literally attack the court. Once 1700 people have simulated the train (and the band could do the train whistles, since they have an actual director to keep them all together), whoever we are playing couldn’t possibly keep their bearings. I think if done correctly, it could rival the “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” as the premier unique college basketball cheer. It sets us apart, pays homage to our mascot and would definitely get under the skin of the opposition.

how about

just simply using Hammer Down. Ham-mer Down pause, Ham-mer Down pause. and you could do this with boiler up, slow it down and remove the claps.

During Chicago Fire games...

… we’d sing “Goodbye Ruby Tuesday, who could hang a name on you” over and over when an opposing player got a red card. This was always really funny to me for some reason. I feel like this would be a good thing for a student section to do during a foul out as opposed to the now cliched “left right left right” routine… Don’t know of any other student section that does it. Just a thought…
