Keith Smith Denied 6th Year

http://www.purduesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/022811aaa.html

It's official now...and its a travesty. He missed ALL of 2007 and only played 2 games in 2010. Players in better situations than Smith got a sixth year...way to stay consistent, NCAA. Hopefully one of our younger receivers can fill the void.

I don't know what to think. The NCAA gets things wrong all the time. The $cam Newton case is probably the best example...but there's also the OSU 5, the Bruce Pearl situation, and the Jim Calhoun suspension. This blows, people. It really does.

Bummer.

He’s a great athlete and student. His presence would have been huge. Hopefully he can get an opportunity at the next level. He has the talent. I wish him the best of luck!

Way to screw this up NCAA

He missed the Combine waiting for your ruling and now he cant come back to school. Such a joke.

by HawkeyeBoiler on Feb 28, 2011 4:51 PM EST reply actions

He was invited to the combine....

supposedly he wasn't recovered for it anyway

still, this ncaa ruling totally blows

I would sue the NCAA.

It shouldn’t be too hard to prove that by dragging their feet they potentially cost Smith significant earning power. Throw in pain and suffering for having to wait on this news, as well.

this doesn't do much to change my opinion

that the NCAA is composed of circus clowns who make decisions by using a random number generator.

by GreenBayBoilermaker on Feb 28, 2011 6:24 PM EST reply actions

That random number generator

is really just a goal seek trying to maximize the NCAA’s payday. Considering some of the other athletes that have gotten a 6th year, they royally dicked over Keith Smith. If he had been wearing an O$U jersey, you better believe he’d be back next year. Get a room full of 2nd graders together and they would have gotten this one right. Fairness clearly plays no part in their subjective decisions.

You deserved better Keith. We were all short changed by not getting to see you back for one more season in the old gold and black. Best of luck at the next level.

Lord, jager me strength.

If he was wearing an O$U jersey

he’d be able to get free tattoos and sell everything he’s ever worn at Purdue while still being allowed to play.

It's time for someone to break the NCAA.

Whether the power conferences rebel or Congress comes down on them for the BCS bullshit, the governing body as a whole needs a serious reality check. This is fucking ridiculous in light of O$U’s suspended-AFTER-the-$ugar-Bowl-revunues-are-in farce last season.

The only thing off the top of my head more retarded than this ruling

is using dollar signs in words.

Maybe he can be a John Standeford type fringe 4th or 5th receiver, more realistically probably a practice squad free agent drifter like Dorien Bryant, but at least it’s still a living doing what you love. I feel bad for him. Good luck to him in the future, and hopefully missing the combine won’t end his chances in the free agent field.

Oh yeah, and I rec'd this

Not because it’s awesome, but because it needs to be seen.

What a load of shit

Wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors…

Fuck you NCAA

Per Rittenberg:
one thing to remember is Smith applied for a sixth year, not a medical hardship waiver, so it’s slightly different. The NCAA doesn’t provide much of an explanation for its ruling, and Smith as of earlier today hadn’t received one. I think the issue with Smith has more to do with the 2007 season than the 2010 campaign. He redshirted in 2007 for more reasons than just injury. He left school in the spring because of a family situation and fell behind academically. He also had an ankle injury that limited him during in-season practices. My guess is that if serious injury had been the sole reason Smith took the redshirt in 2007, he would have received the sixth year. In the cases of Purdue players Jason Werner and Torri Williams, injuries fully wiped out two seasons for both men, and both received sixth years from the NCAA.

Full mailbag here. It sucks for Purdue

still

regardless of their reasons, when they aren’t clear and consistent, it stinks. It’s one thing to have a rule people disagree with and be clear about why you made it and enforce it equally, but quite another to pick and choose which rule should be applied and when. The NCAA is so illogical in creating rules and inconsistent in enforcing them, it’s ridiculous. To quote the Bible, the NCAA strains at gnats while swallowing camels.

by boilerg on Mar 3, 2011 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

True

But there is also something to be said for looking at each case as a unique circumstance where mitigating factors are taken into consideration.

I don’t agree with the NCAA on this particular ruling and they should disclose their process more, but to make blanket rules that don’t take into account all facts is not the way to go.

as far as inconsistency goes...

perhaps the NCAA has been taking lessons from B1G referees?

I think its a fair question

to look at this current team and think about which receivers can fill the void. I have a friend who has classes with multiple players on the team and knows them because he tried to walk on (and didn’t make it). From all accounts I’ve heard it seems like O.J. Ross might have some issues. There were transfer rumors…and it sounds like his grades aren’t outstanding.
Receivers that I look at and see potential:
Shane Mikesky
Charles Turwudzo
Frankie Williams
Raheem Mostert

(Shane, Frankie, and Raheem are all freshmen this fall. Raheem was recruited as a return specialist but could have WR potential…but I look at Shane and Frankie and see serious hope.)
Charles, on the other hand, has been on the team for 1 or 2 years now…he deserves a shot.

I actually feel good about our WR's

I’d feel better with Keith Smith in the line up but I actually think there is plenty of talent. Antavian Edison finished the year well and has a chance to be really good this year. Gary Bush has under-performed his first two years but I expect him to contribute this year. I actually thought he’d be the better of the two but Edison has been better so far. The biggest question mark will be who is throwing these guys the ball. I hope OJ gets his shit together if what you are saying is true because I thought he could be a special player for us. Edison, Bush, and Ross is a decent group of WR’s.

This is a terrible ruling by the NCAA

It ruins his draft stock so much considering he is still rehabbing. He will still get a flier to be on a practice squad as an undrafted rookie, but with the lockout in plain view, free agent rookies can not be contacted by teams following the draft.

Without a labor agreement, Keith Smith’s pro chances will be ruined. That is really sad considering he is such a standout captain with a great team attitude.

I just hope some team remembers him and takes a flier on him after the draft. He would fit nicely into the Bears roster :)
