What to do with Hart?

Since returning from his foot injury, John Hart has been a non-factor. Are we going to leave him out of the scorebook against Illinois and hope he goes apesnot again? He got a few minutes against aOSU, pulled down a rebound, picked up a foul and took an out of rhythm 3 where he took one dribble and fired. I think Painter is struggling to get him plugged back in. Hopefully the potential trap game against IU will give him a chance to log a few more minutes, find his shot and get back in the offensive flow.

keep doing what we are doing

Don’t change a thing right now. If we get way up in a game then get bench guys some minutes but we have no room for error if we want a #2 or possibly (gulp) #1 seed. We have looked great so keep going with what is working.

Work him in

Agreed that Hart has not really gotten back into the flow of the game. I was feeling very good about him watching him shoot around pre-game. He was knocking his shoots down. but then in the actual game missed an open three bad. i also liked his defense but he seems to pick up cheep fouls. I’m still confident in him, and I think the IU game will be a good time to get him some minutes. He really just needs a confidence game now.

transfer

maybe he’ll transfer and free up an offer for someone else. The SG spot is crowed, Smith will be a Sr next year and AJ will be off his redshirt, TJ is still there and gets minutes over Hart.

give it a rest

you know what i’m tired of reading? these posts saying " so and so needs to transfer, kick him out of the program, we don’t want that kid anymore."
Last year it was kelsey barlow, this year it’s patrick bade, now john hart?
Clearly, Matt Painter saw something in these kids that he liked, that he thought fit the program. They’re young. They’re developing. So for the love of all that is black and gold, put a cork in it.

relaz Arizz

it’s just an opinion. If your tired of reading the posts, then stop reading them. I’m not saying he needs to transfer, I just saying he may if he doesn’t like the minutes he is getting. He seems frustrated. That’s it. Cork it!

by boilerbacker31 on Feb 21, 2011 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

frustrated

“When frustrated, give up and transfer.” I bet that’s exactly what Matt Painter is teaching his players. The key to his success as a head coach.

by Arizz on Feb 21, 2011 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you Arizz

I think we should support every player who wears a Purdue uniform with pride and willing to play hard. Just b/c a person is going through a slump and then we try to get rid of him? I understand the scholarship situation, and sure in theory it’ll be nice if we can get rid of some “non-producing” players and sign a top-recruit instead. But that is just like the guy who dumps his girlfriend the very moment that there’s a hotter one in sight. That’s just not right, and I bet no decent girl would want a guy like that. You can play that game forever and keep wishing to have that “other girl”. Instead, why not focus on what you have? When Painter goes on a recruiting trip, how do you think is a better sell:

1) We are a proud program so the moment you struggle we don’t want you in our team b/c there are many other players who would want to play for us, or

2) We are a family and we stand by you even when you are struggling because we believe in you and we stand by you in good times and bad.

And you can sweet-talk all you want but action speaks louder than words.

Another man/woman relationship metaphor!

Clearly, recruiting and dating are similar things.

Too bad you can’t propose to players in basketball. I’m sure we would have put a ring on E’Twaun and JJ’s fingers by now.

If John Hart is frustrated at his minutes,

then I hope Matt Painter says this to him, “John, I understand you are frustrated at your minutes. I’d love to play you more but I need you to defend hard without picking up cheap fouls. I’d like you to channel your frustration into energy and use that to motivate yourself to work harder in practice. Coz I believe in you, and I always remember the lesson you’ve taught every one of us last year at Illinois where the only limiting factor to how well we play is just how big our heart is.”

Matt Painter? Or Lou Holtz?

“I believe in you, Peggy”

We are bringing in 2 PF's and no SG's

If you don’t count A. Johnson, we are not bringing in any guards and we are graduating one. One who plays a lot of minutes at that. Hart still should have some big minutes left to be played for the Boilers. Let’s not forget he was our 3rd scorer before the injury.

I'd like to see him re-discover his role

Not that I can tell you what that is…. Let him hone his skills and vie for playing time next season. We know he’s talented, maybe not completely confident post injury?

I don't think he'll be much of a scorer for the rest of the season

but watch out next November.

He’s still capable of playing hard defense and pretty much not screwing things up badly, so his minutes are still worth having.

You never know with Hart ...

As long as he can avoid picking up cheap fouls, I feel optimistic that he can have a breakout game where he scores 15+ and be the “third scorer” that pushes us to victory. Everyone writes him off (literally) in the Illinois game last year, and let’s not forget he wins that game for us to a certain extent. You just never know with Hart. I still think he can be a contributor.

by charlespig on Feb 21, 2011 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

I am calling a big "Hart" moment in the Tourney

Just saying, I think there will be a point where we are struggling on offense and he comes in and gives us a boost. I like Hart I just wish he was taller so it would work better next year to play him at the 3 and have TJ and Smith split time at the 2. I’d rather have him switching in and out with Barlow.

by lift26 on Feb 22, 2011 1:29 AM EST reply actions

John john would probably be the 3rd person to transfer, if any transfer.

I see two big guys transferring before Hart. Unless he wants to star at Wabash.

by TMILL#2FAN on Feb 22, 2011 7:40 AM EST reply actions

I’d be curious to know what the conversations between Painter and Hart were like during the recruiting period and what they are like now. Did Painter recruit Hart to be a role player or did he honestly think he could be a starter and big time contributor. I think that will impact what John Hart is feeling like right now. If he thought he would always be a role player than perhaps he is happy with his current situation. If he thought he would be a starter by his junior year than perhaps he will be upset and decide to transfer. I don’t really have a strong feeling one way or the other. I hope he stays as I don’t want to see guys leaving the program on a regular basis, but if it allows us to improve than it is probably worth it. At the end of the day it is a business and winning games is what is important.

I believe he was a walk-on for his freshmen year and then was rewarded a scholarship for this year. I don’t see anything wrong with taking away something that was never guaranteed to your for 4 years anyway.

by jwjeffri on Feb 22, 2011 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

No, he's always been a scholarship player

He redshirted his first year, and played sparingly last year during his redshirt freshman year, but he’s always been a scholarship player. It would be terrible form to remove his scholarship. If he decided to leave on his own, that’s another story, but forcing him out would be an awful decision for multiple reasons. For one, I really like his game and think that in a lot of ways, he can be a poor man’s E’Twaun next year.

by wassaw on Feb 22, 2011 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

I really like Harts potential alot

but I also thought he came in as a walkon. I know he redshirted his freshman year, but I was thinking he was a walk on (coming into Purdue espn had his grade at a 40 (outta 100)). But I’ve been wrong before

by ZMack on Feb 22, 2011 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

Nope. Full scholly from day one

Very late signee in the 08’ class. He wasn’t on anyone’s radar but Painter watched him work out, made the offer and that was that.

by Hummel's figurines on Feb 22, 2011 5:50 PM EST reply actions

Well I apologize for my incorrect information. I tend to connect “walk-on” with no scholarship. I think we can all say that Purdue basketball has came a long way that we will not be giving scholarships to guys that have no other offers and would have walked on anyway!

I know he has potential but I saw Jeremy Hollowell (sp?) from Lawrence Central play last night and that is a kid with real potential!

by jwjeffri on Feb 23, 2011 8:25 AM EST up reply actions

get him more minutes

Since Ryne Smith has gone cold I’d like to see Hart play more and Smith less. Hart is a better all around player and can add more to the game. He was playing pretty well before the injury.

by jackrider on Feb 22, 2011 8:15 PM EST reply actions

I think Smith is still the better defender though

and that is king in Painter’s system

At the last Illinois game

Even though his offense was way off, I thought his defense made up for it big time. I remember he made the Illinois offense miserable for the few minutes that he was in and even caused one of their players (I think it was Demetri McCamey) to just throw the ball out of bounds and turning the ball over.

I’m sure what ever is wrong with him will get worked on over the summer and fall before November. Maybe he might go bananas tomorrow at IU.

by btfu_crespo on Feb 22, 2011 10:24 PM EST reply actions

I'd be thrilled to see that

But he needs to not foul as soon as he touches the floor if he wants a look.
