A crazy proposal to solve our problem at the 5
I think it is obvious that our basketball team is not getting enough production from the center position, and even Painter admitted so after the Xavier game. Lawson has the most upside and plays hard, but I can't get over the fact that he played 21 minutes last game and has 0 rebounds, when even little Louie got 4 rebounds on a bad back. (And I haven't mentioned he averages 8 fouls a game) Sandi has flashes of brilliance and long periods of bench-warming. And Carroll is more like a 6'9 jump-shooter who has been getting mercilessly trashed that all I can say is hopefully he can regain his confidence.
So what to do now as we are less than a month from the grueling B1G season? Here's my proposal to Painter: Walk over to Danny Hope's office, and tell him that since we gave him Bade earlier, he should give us Kawaan Short to walk-on when he finishes playing the bowl game. Kawaan was a teammate of E'Twaun in high school, and he is no doubt a BIG presence down low at 300 lbs. There should be no doubt on Kawaan's size, athleticism and bad-assery, which are all very much needed for our basketball team. We don't need him to be a scorer, but we need a big presence to patrol the lane, dunk, and rebound, and I think Kawaan can do a great job. Anyone sees him play? Can he fit? Don't you think he'll be at least an upgrade? If Painter can pull it off it's a great trade for him.
And if I remember correctly, it has been done before. Charles Davis was a TE but he has also walked on to Keady's team, no?

That would be sweeeeet!
I watched him in High School a few times and I must say, he was very very good at basketball. He could play at Purdue and in the B1G once he knocked the rust off.
I wonder about that too
But then the 6’8" Bade was 6’6 on the football team, so I figure a 6’3" Kawaan could be 6’6" on the basketball team. Charles Barkley was generously listed at 6’6" and was a leading rebounder in the NBA b/c he was unmoveable down low. Just box out with the big body. All I am asking Kawaan to do is to rebound, defend, and run.
Athleticism, check. Size, check. Defensive mind, check. Bad-ass, check. Team player, check. I’d love to see how he bodies up on Sullinger.
I thought of it too
Unfortunately, I asked Danny hope at Media days and he gave it a flat out no
A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Hopefully, before too much longer
it won’t be DH’s call to make.
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
That's on media day
This is now. And if Kawaan wants to play bball and Painter wants him, I think that trumps Hope any time.
Anyhow, don’t see this actually happening despite it makes a lot of sense to me – which is why it is not happening, just like a college football playoff.
Anyone remember Julius Peppers?
He was great for UNC hoops. Pulling a freak athlete from the football team is a good idea.

I remember Peppers being ten times the athlete that short is.
I remember Charles Davis. Seems a more apt comparison.

not saying peppers isnt
but short is one hell of an athlete, dude has a crazy vertical and 40 time for someone who is 300 pounds.

Perhaps, but you could make a fairly good argument that Julius Peppers is the greatest natural athlete in the world, given his combination of size, strength, and speed.

I love the idea, BUT...
It’ll never happen. If it does, I’ll be shocked. The “We gave you Bade, so give us Short” argument doesn’t have legs. That won’t make any difference. It’s one of those things that sounds crazy enough it might actually work, especially when you point out Charles Barkley as a model. I’d be in favor of it happening, but this is the definition of “longshot.”

No doubt it is a long shot
It’s crazy; it’s wild; it’s insane. And really, even if it were to happen it won’t be Painter going to Hope’s office, but more so that Painter has a talk with Kawaan and Kawaan decides to walk-on. But hey, you can’t fault me for not thinking outside the box ;-)
Anything would help the bball team at the five but...
From Kawann’s perspective I would think it would be a bad idea. He is a junior now and is definately considered a strong NFL prospect. Is it worth the risk(ACL or other leg injury) to play some hoops. His moneymaker will be his future in football, I wouldn’t think he would want to risk that.
All that being said, if he could show some freak athleticism on the BBall court and not get hurt it definately wouldn’t hurt his draft stock ala Julius Peppers.
Ignorance can be fixed. Stupidity is forever.
Here's a Novel Idea
maybe the three bigs, really two as Lawson is exceeding expectations, need to grow a pair and learn to play their position. Same goes for DJ Byrd, who has apparently gone south for the winter ever since it was determined Donnie Hale wasn’t going to cut into his minutes as a back up to Hummel.
Sure, it is crazy and it is unlikely to happen
But 1) never cease to think outside the box, at one point the Miami Heat trinity was also a ridiculous idea; 2) if you have better idea, pls share; 3) one of the perks as a fan is to speculate, like who the team is recruiting (or drafting, or trading for, if it’s a pro team), and you are missing the fun of it.
I am sure if at the beginning of the season after Henry’s out and someone suggested we should play a 2-QB system, I’d say that would be a ridiculous dumb idea too. Well, it is still dumb, but Hope makes it sounds like it’s absolutely reasonable b/c – according to him, we have two great QBs, so we should play both.
Why didnt we try to get a Juco center?
We had a scholly open. Do you think Painter had faith in tc and chooch that they would produce?

ask IU how their juco centers have been working out for them

Boiler up!

Well, I think we didn't want to tie up our scholly
If we offered a juco 2 yrs, then we wouldn’t have a chance to get Gary Harris. If we get a juco for 1 yr, if he is any good he’d have been taken already, and if he isn’t that good but has “potential”, then it probably doesn’t justify the time needed to get him to speed in our system.
I think this kind of thing rarely ever happens anymore. Must be a fear of injury.
Charlie Ward – FSU
Ronald Curry – UNC
Chris Kramer (oh wait, we all salivated over that idea too)
I honestly had this idea as well
Personally my thought is you just bring in short to defend Sullinger for 2(or 3) games this year. Sullinger is going to move anyone we put on him down low, but with Short Sullinger wouldn’t at least be able to do anything he wants down there.
So short could never chase down a qb whenever the qb started to scramble
think he’s going to be able to run up and down the court and be effective? also that dunk that was shown was at least a good 60lbs ago. He’s also 6’4. Think people
To your call once more we rally...
