Hammons looks good

I don’t like it when big men aren’t active and he needs to be more active moving his arms and feet quicker. He does look savvy although he needs to post up more and box out more. 2 quick fouls so if he does start next year he’ll probably have issues staying in the game.

Hammons looks like a stud

I have only seen one game of Hammons in my life and it is this one, but I think he looks like a stud. His guards are so selfish it is unbelievable, but that is what you get at a school like that. I think he is going to be a really really good center in the Big Ten with NBA ability. It is just some little things I notice.

I think he looks like he could be a stud

I watched a short bit of this game and part of the game a few weeks ago against that highly ranked team. I think he has serious potential. He’s huge and pretty athletic. He gets more bad reviews than good. I noticed tonight he doesn’t get in best position to rebound and that shouldn’t be too hard for someone his size. I think with the coaching he will get at Purdue he could be very good.

I notice his attitude doesn’t appear to be the best but I think once he gets back to Indiana and has more of a purpose when he plays at Purdue he could turn out to be a serious stud. He definitely will need to learn how to stay out of foul trouble. I can’t even imagine him and Lawson or even Simpson in the lineup together.

Starting Lineup in two years:

PG – Bryson Scott
SG – Anthony Johnson / Terone Johnson
SF – Raphael Davis
PF – Jacob Lawson / Donnie Hale
C – AJ Hammons

2nd unit:

Ronnie Johnson
Terone Johnson
Kendall Stephans / Basil Smotherman
Jay Simpson
Sandi Marcius

Damn that a lot of talent and a lot of logjams! Picking that starting lineup will be quite the challenge. I could see Simpson being redshirted and then probably Smotherman.

Iffy on lineup; agree on redshirt

I am not sure on the starting lineup (not that it’s bad, but I think RJ and TJ can also make a case to be starters). But I like the idea that we can go big (Hammons – Lawson – Hale – Davis – Scott) or quick (Lawson – Hale – Smotherman – Scott – RJ). If everyone comes on board and no transfers, this is one heck of a group!

I do agree with your prediction on red-shirting Simpson and Smotherman, based on what I’ve been reading about their progress and the fact that Painter has redshirted a player every year (from Hart, to Sandi, to AJ, to Hale). And it really makes sense. If we can’t compete on getting the 5*, we may as well take a 3/4* with HUGE potential but some glaring weakness (e.g. weight, defense). If we can get him to fix the weakness during the redshirt year, not only will he get a better understanding of our system, but also that by the time he plays he can contribute right away (see AJ, or even Cardinal). Of course not every red-shirt will pan out so perfectly. But given the fact that we have depth in almost all positions (except C), red-shirting a player each year makes perfect sense to me. It’ll be hard to sell to recruits though.

Not sure about redshirt

From what I got, CMP redshirted the last few years mostly because of minutes. Playing behind JJ, Moore & Rob, rookies arent going to get many minutes and is a waste of a season. That being said, I don’t see any forward who is guaranteed 30+ minutes next year that would warrant a redshirt. I would guess also that if we were to redshirt a player every year so they can develop more, that would really turn off most recruits.

Just don't see the minutes for Simpson

Hammons, Sandi, Lawson, Hale, TC will share the 4th and 5th spot, that’s 80 minutes among 5 players already (about 16 mins each). Unless some significant injury to a player (pls don’t) or we do some kind of full-court press and keep subbing players (just don’t see it with Painter) I just don’t see the PT for Simpson.

by charlespig on Dec 31, 2011 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe

I would think the 5 would be between Hammons, Sandi & TC… with Hammons getting most of the minutes. That would leave Lawson, Hale & Simpson. Lawson should get a good chunk of those minutes. That would leave Simpson vs Hale.

Who do you think will be better: Hale or Simpson? Simpson is more of a power forward than Hale. Simpson has 25lbs on him and 35lbs on Lawson. Do either Hale or Simpson shoot well, because Lawson doesn’t have a jumpshot? I think there might be too many issues for CMP to narrow it down before the season starts.

I could see Basil redshirting though.

What about Hale at 3?

I mean he seems to have an outside shot and from the videos I’ve seen, is pretty athletic. If he is quick enough, why can’t we go long and play a Hammons/Sandi/TC…Lawson/Simpson…Hale ?

Yes

I like the big lineup of putting Hale at the 3. We can’t just keep playing small ball!
