Robert Marve's Chances for Sixth Year?

Marve redshirted his first season at Miami because of a car accident. He also re-injured his knee last season during our 4th game. Additionally, he missed a year by sitting out as a result of transfer rules and tore his ACL the same year (of course, I don't think this plays a role in his chances). I think that if he is able to come back, he is going to show up with something to prove. I think his return could be great for the team. As is, our QB situation is shaky, and we know CTB isn't exactly the answer. I know there are some of you who don't want to see Marve come back, but I really hope he does. If he has a full season of play, I don't see why we couldn't win at least 8 games. What do you guys think his chances are?

I'd say 25%

Mostly because Case Keenum got a 6th year while playing quite a bit before injuring his knee

A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

This isn't anything against Marve...

but I hope he doesn’t get it. This program needs some good continuity at QB. Hopefully Henry can take the reigns back next season.

I was saying...

That Appleby will eventually be our future QB. He wants continuity, so who is there? CTB and Henry? With CTB, expect another 6-6 season or worse, and he only has another year left, same as Marve. Rob Henry is extremely athletic, but I don’t consider him a starting QB, he serves best as a change of pace QB or line him up somewhere else.

12 months is too short a time to get back in top form for football players

As much as I want to be proven otherwise, Henry likely won’t be in top shape (and he wasn’t even a good passer to begin with).

So if your wish comes true that Marve doesn’t come back, then our only option is really CTB all the way. Is that what you want?

At least then we don’t have to deal with the stupid 2-qb system anymore.

I'm more optimistic about Henry

ACL injuries aren’t the same for everyone and Henry seems to be dealing with his very well. Just watching him on the sidelines and in warmups he was not on crutches very long, and after his surgery he was out there throwing and things and he looked pretty good.

I believe 12 months will be enough for him to be back to 100% physically at least, although it still might take some real games to get back mentally.

I really want it to happen

But with the Keith Smith ruling, I just don’t know about the NCAA anymore. Marve seems to have had more “bad luck” during his career, but I don’t know if the Miami cloud tarnishes him in any way.

by Mattdsm on Dec 29, 2011 11:53 PM EST reply actions

I have a hard time seeing it.

But if Henry isn’t back 100% and ready to play with CTB, I hope Marve gets it. I don’t see Robinson as a legitimate starter and Appleby most likely will redshirt.

Very Slim

I’m not very optimistic about his chance. Especially when Keith Smith was previously denied by the NCAA. I’d like to see him come back, but I know we have other QBs who want to prove something. Henry, Robinson, Appleby, etc.

by DatDude556 on Dec 30, 2011 7:19 AM EST reply actions

maybe he struck up a deal

for them to grant the 6th year along with that amnesty in the Miami scandel. Maybe not. Anyway, poor kid. He started out at Miami with what seemed like a big ego (naturally if you’re breaking Tebow’s records and being treated to the Miami nightlife as a kid) and now I really think he has his head on straight. He’s really been through a lot. The car accident preventing him from playing a whole season and suspended twice (once for vandalism and once for grades). Now he’s stayed out of trouble and got his grades up. Torn ACL twice. He’s only played 2 and a half seasons. They better grant it.

One thing I noticed is he really cares about the program and the other players. The way he basically consoled Akeem Hunt on the sideline after that fumble is what I want to see in our QB/Leader.

I hope he gets it too

So that he gets another shot at being a great QB, which he deserves to have. Any time I see him on the sideline he is always enthusiastic, which might not be easy for a former blue chip now backing up a 2* guy like CTB.

I don’t understand why some folks don’t want him back. I mean, at the minimum, let NCAA decide. Henry is unlikely to be 100%; we know CTB is a capable backup but that’s his ceiling; everything I’ve heard about Sean Robinson is that he is more suited for safety. Do you wanna start a true frosh? Ppl keep saying Appleby but he’s raw and even his high school team struggled this yr, so it is absurd to put him in fire when there are 3 or 4 QBs with more experience ahead of him.

by charlespig on Dec 30, 2011 9:07 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly

yeah, what I was trying to say is his attitude has been great. You can’t really ask for much better after two ACL tears and not getting a chance to start his senior year. Maybe he picked that up from watching Keith Smith on the sidelines his last year with such a great attitude. I think he commands the team and is the much better leader between he and CTB. Henry does about as good of a job leading the team but he is better suited for a Siller type roll. And more of and end of the year Siller role where we used more wildcat with him.

I hope next year it’s Marve with CTB as the backup and Henry eased back as a wildcat QB. Appleby redshirt and Robinson move to safety. I don’t know what Bilal Marshall is going to do. He said he wants to start multiple years. I really like that we have him as a dual threat option in the future but I want to see 4 quality years from Appleby as I think he is the next great QB in the cradle. I’m a believer after watching the Elite 11 competition.

by Boiler00 on Dec 30, 2011 9:38 AM EST up reply actions

dream scenario right there

If Henry could play as a 3rd or 4th receiver too we could have a true wildcat look that teams wouldn’t know what he was doing until he lined up.

by boilerrob on Dec 30, 2011 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

The idea that Henry would be one of the top 3 or 4 receivers on the team next year seems dubious to me. Has he ever played receiver? Can he catch?

Also, I hate keeping the quarterback on the field when going to a “wildcat” formation. It puts you at a disadvantage for a very mild surprise. The defense knows what to do when they see that package, they’ve practiced against it. As a defensive coach, I’d much rather see Caleb TerBush split out wide against my base defense than sub in a run defender to match up against a team with 11 useful guys out there. Either take him off, or just hand it to a running back.

x2
I hope next year it’s Marve with CTB as the backup and Henry eased back as a wildcat QB. Appleby redshirt and Robinson move to safety.

But unless he wins Hope’s trust, I just don’t see Hope deviating from his genius 2-qb system. It is not impossible though.

In any case, it is out of our hands. Let NCAA decide and we just sit back and wait. At least it isn’t like end of the world if he doesn’t get a sixth year.
