Welcome to the Fold: Ryan Watson
Things are looking up Boiler fans. We got ourselves a nice shiny 4-star recruit. Ryan Watson is his name and rushing the passer is his game. The man from Olney, Maryland picked us over Pittsburgh.
He had offers from a lot of other schools and is a solid 4-star. He's the 17th ranked defensive end in the nation and at 6'3 and 270 pounds, he's ready to play right away. Our pass rush struggled this season but Ryan Russell had a great bowl game and he and Watson could give us a great push off the edge.
The curse of the 4-star is well-known to us fans. We haven't a player that has truly lived up to the 4-star status in God knows how long. For as goofy as Danny Hope can be during practice and on game day, he is a heck of a recruiter. This will give our class a MAJOR bump. Top 5 in the Big 10 anyone? I'm gonna say so.
I found junior year highlights and I was impressed. First team all state as a junior is not too shabby. He put some VICIOUS hits on the quarterback and running back. He has a nose for the ball. This is a great get for Purdue and a great overall week. Little Caesar Bowl win on Tuesday, win the Big 10 opener on Wednesday and get Watson into the fold on Thursday.
Great end to 2011!

Hope is a heck of a recruiter?
What planet do you live on? To be happy with the fifth best recruiting class in the conference is the definition of accepting mediocrity.
Considering how we've complained about a lack of talent
I’d say 5th best if not higher is a step up from where we’ve been.

We're not going to beat OSU and Michigan right now
But that doesn’t meant we should just accept it. There was a time when Purdue was positioning itself to become that kind of football program under Joe Tiller. Remember when there was talk of an upper deck on Ross Ade and Tiller was landing a handful of four-star kids a season?
I want Big Ten championships and national championships. I want the program and the Boiler community to reflect that mindset.

You don’t go from losing seasons to landing top 10 classes right away. You have to start somewhere and by improving the talent of the guys coming in you give yourself a much better chance of getting those championship level classes later.

I'm certainly no Hope acolyte, but I give him his due here.
He has improved recruiting every year and is now recruiting above our current level, ie 5th or so when the current team finishes around 8-9th. At this stage, that’s a success. His next class is almost entirely 3-star guys with a couple 4s thrown in. That is a HUGE step up from what he started with, with at best half a class of threes and on down to unranked players.
He’s done well in this area. There are legitimate beefs with his game-planning and decision-making, but his recruiting has been what I’d call good but not great. For a currently mediocre program, getting good recruits is, well, a good job.

How fast can he take a police boot off a car?
Glad to see our other tradition for Def ends continue since our cradle of quarterbacks has an empty cradle
Posted this in the fanpost so forgive me if this is annoying to repost it here:
Scout.com has him as a OG and the #7 rated guard prospect in the country. I wonder if Hope wants him to play on offense because he has a history of converting defensive linemen to offensive lineman.
If that is true we could have alot of talent to work with on the offensive line for next year and the next several years.
LT: Foy (Jr)
LG: Schmeig (Sr)
C: Drey (Sr)
RG: Snapp (Jr)
RT: De Boef (RS-So)
With Jason King and potentailly Watson to push the OG/C for spots and Devin Smith, Jordan Roos and Cameron Cermin to push for time at OT – with King and Smith looking the most ready for playing time.
Hope looks like he has something going in the offensive line recruiting game and his development of Purdue from a Tiller passing offense to a run first team behind a big offensive line.

I think the question is whether he plays DE or DL.

That’s certainly possible, if those dimensions are correct, I’d suspect he’d be more of a tackle prospect than an end prospect if he stays on defense. He certainly doesn’t run like an end.

They describe him as:
An offensive tackle for this Good Counsel team, Watson projects inside on the next level because of his size. He is a punishing, technically sound, tenacious drive blocker. He is a good athlete who can make a turn upfield on a pull block to pick drive a linebacker. Very good change of direction for an offensive lineman, adept at getting to the second level and quick off the line of scrimmage – Scott Kennedy, Scout.com
Its not crazy to think if they give him some time and on the right program he could be in that 6-3 to 6-4 and 290 to 310 sweet spot for guards. He and Jason King seem to be very similar type of OG, athletic and powerful but not 6-8 360 pound monsters.
He also seems a bit big for what we usually have at DE right? Aren’t our DEs usually an inch or two taller and twenty pounds or so lighter?

Yeah, I’d have a hard time seeing him as an end. Magee played some there when we were stacked at tackle with Baker, Guynn and Neal, but I don’t see him playing there at that size. DT or G are most likely.

Jalani Phillips
I don’t see Watson playing end, the guy I expect to pair with Russell is Phillips. I think in a couple of years, we’re going to have a pretty good set of rush ends with those two.
I doubt it.
Shaun is from the northeast, Jalani is from Georgia.

4 Star Recruits
Using Rivals’s stats, the only 4-star recruit who has panned out (performed on the field, wasn’t a cancer in the locker room) since the 2002 class is Dorian Bryant. The jury is still out on recent recruits, but the underperformance of 4-star recruits is just remarkable.
I wouldnt call Dorian Bryant a non-cancer either
Whoever lives past today and comes home safely will rouse himself each year on this day, show his neighbors his scars, and tell embellished stories of all their great feats of battle.
The OLineman we just had a verbal from....
….Texas, James Prince, should become a solid “get” in time. One of my partners at Drafttek.com is extremely knowledgeable of the Texas high school football circuit and sent me this report on him in an email:
on to Mr. Prince . . . HS program of the games I attended had him listed at 275, which I doubted . . . looked lean even with pads on. I saw 268 on one of the recruiting sites, but kids can add and drop weight like crazy. Good footwork on pass blocking, as SLC runs the spread offense and maintains fairly good leverage on run-blocking, can get a little high at times (as all kids do at that age) but really gets to the second level effectively. The one concern most scouts have with SLC prospects is it’s a “school of affluence” and some (not all) of the kids come out of there with an attitude of entitlement and don’t have the proper work ethic — I haven’t heard this trait attached to Prince specifically, just speaking in general. All in all, I’d say you got yourself a “dandy” as I had heard Wisconsin had their hooks on him (and when Wisconsin is interested in an OL prospect, they’re bound to be pretty good and end up going there 90% of the time).
FWIW…..but I’ve always said Hope doesn’t do all that bad in recruiting (though I think we need to have that coach that can take it to the next level) and is getting some kids to come in from Texas and Florida, which is good.
BTFU !!
Movin on up...
Looks like we have two 4-Star guys now in this class… Carlos Carvajal just moved up to 4-Star on rivals…

Good instincts and nack for finding the ball
He looks pretty good in that JR year video. He seems to just have that trait that lets him get to ball and accurately predict where its going to be. Can’t wait to see him on the field. And I give credit where credit is due, and Hope is recruiting fairly well.
Olney, MD - DC Area
I wonder if watching the Skin’s rookie OLB this year influenced his decision at all. Did Superman stop by one game night with a handshake and a Boiler UP? “You say you were a 2star before 4 years in WLaf, Mr Kerrigan?”
DH is not the only recruiting asset we have at Purdue. Who knows, the kid may want to be an astronaut one day.
