More bad news for the football team
First it is OJ Ross. Then Dwayne Beckford b/c of DUI, and now Gerald Gooden (a senior no less!) and Will Lucas are also arrested b/c of suspicion of theft!?!?!? Every news coming out from the football team has been disappointing lately.
To me, that just shows a lack of discipline. Danny Hope talks a good talk, but he is not walking the walk. The result speaks louder than his words. I know ultimately it is the players' responsibility to behave, but I think this also reflects the coach's failure in getting the msg across to the players. Good coaches help the players not just on the field, but more importantly, build their character off the field.
I am not optimistic about the Western Michigan's game at all!!

Well....
I’m sure this latest episode of bad behavior will be a part of Morgan Burke’s evaluation of Hope. It will not help and quite frankly could raise enough flags to justify removing him…

According to the article: theft isn’t really the logical or proper term for what they did but it is the legal
the boot was the property of the police, they had the boot...that's not theft?
Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

Who hasn't tried to remove a boot from their car?
Knew a army buddy from VA Tech that almost lost his comission because they “arrested” him for theft for removing the boot…this is a college kid being a college kid…DUI unacceptable however…
Just b/c u r young doesn't give u a free pass to be dumb
…esp when you are representing your university, you need to be even extra careful, esp right before a bowl game which we haven’t been in for 3 yrs.
Who hasn’t tried to remove a boot from their car?
I haven’t.
Me niether.
Although I would have to figure out a way to remove a boot from my ass if my parents ever found out I tried something like this.

Here's a newsflash.
That has nothing to do with Hope…and I know how popular it is around here to blame everything on him. This goes squarely on the players….Hope comes in by making sure that they’re punished. These players are adults. They aren’t kids that need adult supervision 24/7.

Your mentioning of OJ Ross seems more like a knee jerk reaction…
If you’ve read everything on Ross, his issue was with grades. From what Hope has said and what’s been reported he got his grades to the level they needed to be but his focus/time spent doing schoolwork kept him away from the field and since he missed too much practice Hope won’t play him. I’m pretty sure we all know people that have had issues with academics for one reason or another.
The Gooden/Lucas issue just sounds like something a lot of people would try, but usually fail in doing so.
And while not excusing it at all, the DUI for Beckford is bad but that’s something independent of the football team and goes on far more than people get cited for.
However…if you’ve noticed Hope has quickly disciplined his players for any violations. So how is he “not walking the walk” when he steps in and actually does something and punishes the players for when they make mistakes? If he wasn’t “walking the walk” he just try to sweep the issue aside and avoid/ignore it, which he has not done once so far

There seems to be some confusion
1. I actually think Hope does the right thing in suspending Ross and I give him a thumb up. All the players mentioned deserved to be suspended, even if it is a bowl game (unlike OSU which allows their players to play in the bowl game). That’s NOT what I am complaining.
2. Yes, at the end of the day, the ultimate responsibility goes to the players to maintain good grades and don’t get into legal trouble. I already said that. However, I believe the coaches share some responsibility too. It isn’t enough just to say you have to maintain a 2.0 GPA at the beginning of the semester and expect the players will undoubtedly follow through. If the players deem the coaching staff as not serious about what they say, they tend to slack off, and the coaches bear some responsibility too.
People keep giving excuses to the players (they are just being college kids and who haven’t done that), then precisely b/c of that, the coaches should pay more attention and work more with the kids, like giving them enough warning and help when their grades start to suffer – not when it is too late and have to be suspended. Likewise, Beckford has a history of running into the law. Obviously the DUI is Beckford’s fault, but I’d think that if the coaching staff do their job and really get the msg across to Beckford, it could have been avoided.
3. Normally, I’d give the benefit of doubt to the coaching staff (b/c as I keep saying, it’s ultimately the players’ bad decision). But if time and time again we see players running into trouble, I can’t help but think that the coaching staff is not doing good enough a job. Yes, they hand out the discipline action like they say they would, but they didn’t do a good job in getting the players to understand the msg across in the first place. Prevention is better than cure. Being proactive is better than handing out suspensions after the fact. That’s the difference between good coaches and bad coaches.
4. If you listen to players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Bill Walton, they praise John Wooden not only for the basketball lessons, but for Coach to make them a better person, on and off the court. The same can be said for Dean Smith (ask MJ), Coach K (as guys like Battier and Grant Hill who show up on his record-breaking win this year testify) – the coach helps them grow from boys to men. That is what separates the “good” coach and “great” coach. And that is what separates the truly great coach like John Wooden and the “great only in the win column” coach like Bobby Knight. If coaches are getting credit for the players’ good decision, then we can’t just say “it’s the players’ stupid decision” that has absolutely nothing to do with the coaching staff.
1. cool
2. college kids make mistakes especially when you have a group of 100 kids. If it’s just misdemeanors and not repeat offenders then hey maybe they learned. Everyone does something wrong at some point.
3. believe me our program seems to be on the low end of trouble (look at unc, O$U, forida, USC) we all just watch Purdue A LOT more closely so we hear when one of our guys shows up 5 min late to class.
4. I hate to play the generation card but times have changed, I’m not saying it’s good or bad I’m just saying the world works differently now. Some players are going to get in trouble and this is a pretty minor offense.
Fair enough
I guess just the continuous bad news coming out from the football program these days make me kinda in a pissed mood. Hopefully they don’t get embarrassed in the bowl game next week. After all, it’s kinda a “road” game and our record on the road hasn’t been good.
As for O$U, USC and FL players getting into more trouble, I guess that’s probably true. On the other hand, as Painter once joked, until you are a 20ppg guy, he is not gonna put up with you. I guess there is some truth to that, and those players at O$U and USC are all bluest of the blue chips, so they kinda “earned” to be the trouble maker. (For example, the Reggie Bush or Cam Newton problem would NEVER happen to Purdue players, but that is not b/c they are better disciplined)
I'm happy with the way Hope handled this
He suspended Beckford for the game, and isn’t even allowing him to travel with the team (that means he misses all the nice bowl gear and party). This is great discipline for players who usually get slaps on the wrist at O$U, Florida, and many others.
It says the guys are paying the full value of the parking tickets and will probably get some form of non conviction for the offense. Seems like it’s being handled well. Seems like so far the punishments have fit the crimes starters or not.
Let me Clarify...
I didn’t mean to make light of the removal of the boot…yes it was dumb, and yes it is illegal…but my great point which I failed to express was that 25-30 years ago the coach finds out about this screams at the kids, makes them go apologize to the chief of police, makes them pay the tickets, and makes them promise to wash squad cars for a month and then makes the kids run suicides till they puke and maybe sit for a quarter…now it’s on twitter and message boards before anyone can take care of the problem…yes it was dumb…yes it reflects poorly on purdue athletics…yes athletes should be held to a higher standard…but i don’t think the boot situation is anywhere near as stupid as failing out or even close to the DUI
