The 2012 Quarterback Situation
I don't think anyone outside of Danny Hope was happy with the quarterback situation this year. The rotating quarterback situation seemed to work for a few games, specifically the Ohio State game where Caleb TerBush orchestrated a nice opening touchdown drive, but Robert Marve finished the job. More often than not it was a confusing battle where at times Marve looked superior, then TerBush would avoid the dumb interception that seemed to plague Marve. The offense never seemed to be truly in sync and the passing game was a series of screens and short routes. The big play never seemed to be a threat.
TerBush started all 12 games, but only took every snap in two of them. Sean Robinson came on for a single series against Middle Tennessee State, took three snaps, and was never seen again as he was able to hold on to his redshirt. Against Rice and Illinois TerBush played the entire game. By the end of the year we technically had three quarterbacks playing with Justin Siller in for the Wild Siller plays, but he never threw (even though we knew he could).
The old saying is that if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks. Well, next year could be even worse. We could see three quarterbacks battling for playing time with multiple starts under their belts. The return of Rob Henry complicates matters, and with Marve possibly returning for a sixth year there will be a true battle for the position. Part of me wishes that Marve does not get granted the sixth year so it makes it an easier decision, but part of me wishes the kid does get a sixth year so he can earn the job and get one last shot to do something with his vast potential.
It's not an easy call, either. Each player has his strengths that makes the decision even tougher. Let's break down the candidates one by one.
Rob Henry - Jr. - The coaching staff has been very quiet on where Henry is at in his rehab, but he can't be too far along yet considering he is only about three months after his surgery. With Henry, we have a natural leader and an excellent runner, but how much will his running ability be affected by the knee injury? He's probably 50/50 at best for spring ball, meaning he could be out a full year before he can even practice again. Let's face it, I think we also have zero confidence that his knee won't snap again given what we've gone through with Robbie Hummel, Marve, and Ralph Bolden. That's why it is good we have a ton of experience behind him if he does win the starting job. still, his leadership is something that has been missing from the offense.
Henry's throwing ability has also been a question mark. We didn't have a chance to see what improvements he made before this season, and half of last season he could barely throw a football at all after nearly having his finger ripped off.
I could see Henry making a move to wide receiver if he ended up third in the quarterback derby. We need his athleticism on the field. He is one of our few weapons that can do a lot with the football in his hands. It might be nice to turn him into a tight end or an outside receiver with his size and speed. His throwing is a concern, so if we eliminate that part of the equation and Siller-ize him, I think it could work out.
Caleb TerBush - Sr. - People have ripped on him a lot, but I have been pleased with what Caleb has done. In the first two starts of his career he led game-winning drives in the final minutes (at least he would have had we blocked better on the field goal attempt at Rice). He was pretty solid at the start of games in terms of taking us down the field for a score. His numbers tell a pretty good tale: He threw for over 1,800 yards with a 61% completion percentage and a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio. That was done while only playing about half or less of many games.
I hate the term, but Game Manager is apt when describing TerBush. He has a keen sense of when to tuck the ball and run and he doesn't make a ton of mistakes. He's not going to bomb away for 450 yards and five scores like the Brees-Orton-Painter (MAC only) teams, but he'll at least keep you in the game. I don't think he was awful for a guy that had barely played in the past three years. The down side is that the offense feels severely limited with him. His longest pass was 50 yards on a route at Penn State that Justin Siller broke for about 42 after the catch.
With Caleb at the helm next year we have a poor man's version of Joey Elliott.
Robert Marve - Sr. (6) - Marve is pretty much a wild card at this point. He came to Purdue with high hopes, but in the end we may only get less than 10 games out of him by the time you figure in his limited playing time this year. In fact, for such a highly touted quarterback, Marve could possibly finish his career having only played three complete games. Those came last year against Notre Dame, Ball State, and Western Illinois. Even then, we still saw Henry for a few snaps.
Poor Marve has never had the chance to be THE guy in his career. At Miami, he had to split time with Jacory Harris. At Purdue he split time with Henry until hurting his knee again, then with TerBush all year. This year in limited action he gave us 557 yards passing and three TD's against five interceptions. I can't imagine his frustration, as it seemed like he could do the most with the offense, but it was often scaled back for him to limited handoffs.
If Marve is granted a sixth year I think he needs to really dedicate himself to winning the job above TerBush and Henry and leaving no doubt he is THE MAN. He has the arm and all the physical tools, but he has yet to put it together. One could argue that he has never really been given the chance to prove himself. If he earns it, I'd love to see him get a shot.
Sean Robinson - So. (RS) - Robinson seems to be the forgotten man in this derby, but he does have one start and extensive playing time from last season. He was able to get a much-needed redshirt this year after playing three plays in the opener against MTSU. When he was forced to play last season it was obvious that he needed that redshirt.
Entering his third year in the program and with multiple quarterbacks coming in behind him, the time is now for Robinson to make his mark. He's probably fourth right now, but if Marve does not get a 6th year and Henry makes a position switch it could come down to TerBush and Robinson. Sean ran the ball very well in high school and had a few good runs in 2010. He still only has 301 yards passing and a 1:3 touchdown to interception ratio.
Austin Appleby - Fr. - Ideally, Appleby redshirts next year to ease the transition from high school to college. It is always difficult to make that leap and be immediately effective. We have the players in place to allow it, too. Everyone seems to think Appleby be is the real deal. It would be nice for him to have some time to cultivate that talent so he is more ready to take over in 2013 or 2014.
Bilal Marshall - Fr. - Purdue's most recent recruit is an intriguing dual-threat quarterback that makes me think the two-quarterback system could be here as long as Hope is here. In this recruiting class alone you have a dual-threat guy and a more traditional pocket passer in Appleby. Marshall is still pretty raw. He had 675 yards rushing and 8 TDs this past season and 1,296 passing yards with 17 TDs and five picks. He's a possible position switch guy, but he wants to play quarterback. Honestly, we're probably looking at another disaster injury scenario if we see him play quarterback next season.
Final Thoughts:
What we have is three guys for the immediate future and three guys for 2013 and beyond. We have the luxury of playing a guy with experience and having an experienced backup while we take the time to develop players like Marshall and Appleby. Much depends on what the NCAA decides in Marve's case, however. I don't think Henry makes a position switch is Marve is unable to return, but another year for Marve gives us the luxury of putting Henry on the field at receiver, playing TerBush or Marve, having a solid No. 3 in Robinson, and stashing both Marshall and Appleby away for the future.
If Marve does not return, I think Henry wins the starting job with TerBush as the solid backup. With a mobile quarterback like Henry a solid backup is always needed since injury is a major risk. We also could still have Robinson at the No. 3 with Appleby and Marshall redshirting. If it was my choice (and it isn't), I'd rank them as follows:
1. Marve (if he returns)
2. Henry
3. TerBush
4. Robinson (based on experience in the system)
5. Appleby
6. Marshall

This is an incredibly easy problem to fix
Day 1 of spring practice Hope makes it clear that the position is up for grabs. A couple weeks before the season opener, Hope clearly names #1, #2 QB and so on. Doesn’t matter who’s healthy, or how close it, or what kind of ‘system’ he is trying to run. If we are gonna actually be successful next year (sorry, but 6-6 and playing in the Hot-n-Ready Bowl isn’t a success), we need a clear #1 and #2
Agreed
Just put it up for grabs and whoever shows the most promise, make him your man. No more of this 2 QB system. We need a consistent starter out there for the best results.

Easy to fix, yes; will Hope do it, no
Didn’t you hear so many times this season Hope keeps saying, “We have two GREAT quarterbacks, so we are going to play them both.” ?
For him, if there is no clear-cut favorite, then both should play. I don’t expect a clear-cut favorite next year (unless Marve gets 6th year and is completely healthy and living to his potential), so ALL would get to play.
I agree your method makes absolutely the most sense, but if anything I’ve learned from 3 yrs of Hope is that he doesn’t do things that makes sense, and the result is usually less than desired.
A big question
Does anybody want Marve back? At this point, it’s obvious to me…and should be obvious to everyone else…that Marve simply isn’t the guy. He’s had chances and has thrown pick after pick when it mattered. TerBush, while having thrown some errant passes himself, is nowhere near as turnover prone. Numbers speak for themselves.
There are so many quarterbacks on this roster that it would be better for the program to move past Marve. Henry will be back…and because of the likelihood of a second tear, it’s really good that TerBush will be ready to go if something happens. I think the reason that we had a 2-QB system is because the coaches felt like they had to have Marve play…while TerBush had to play in the beginning of the season due to Marve’s rehab. Appleby and Marshall should both redshirt next year.

I want Marve back
And I would love to see him get the chance to start a game, rather than being sent out in the 2nd or 3rd when we’re down by 7 or 10 points. As T-Mill said, I think he’s had a string of rotten luck and I feel very bad for him. As a fan, I am more optimistic about the offense when he’s in the game. He will at least attempt downfield throws, something CTB and the coaching staff seem afraid of trying.
To be cliche, you can never have too many QBs with experience. Even if he gets his NCAA waiver and sits on the bench, he is a serviceable insurance policy should a read option miscue send CTB off the field for a while. (How would we make up for those 2 yard runs? I shudder at the thought).
He’s waited his turn, worked through injury and not had any off-field issues during his time at Purdue. We should be thankful to have him for however long we do.
Still to be determined.

He’s never had a legit shot since he got here.

I hope Marve comes back!
No one can honestly say that he isn’t the right QB for Purdue right now, for the simply fact that he hasn’t even had a chance. He didn’t get to play a whole game this season, while Terbush had a few….and never impressed in any of them.
Terbush doesn’t have the ability, he may be the prototypical size but just doesn’t have the mechanics, skill, or arm. Out of the QB’s on the depth chart Marve has the mechanics, arm and more importantly has that big play ability. That is where you get lost, with big play ability often comes turnovers. But with a QB that can make a big play Purdue takes that next step, with Terbush at best Purdue stalls at 5-6 wins.
Now a big question for you:
Between Terbush and Marve, who do you think has more NFL potential?
by BoilermakerNation on Dec 15, 2011 12:23 AM EST up reply actions
Marve!
I don’t think he’s going to get a 6th year, and if he does it will make the Keith Smith decision even more frustrating. That said, I would love to have Marve back. I think he was very frustrated last year. His injury kept him from doing anything in the spring and very little in training camp. This allowed Terbush the oppurtunity to take the starting job and put Marve at a distinct disadvantage. It just seemed like Marve tried to do to much when he did play because he was trying to win the starting job back. This led to some really dumb plays, but he also made some great throws that Terbush just can’t make.
I’d love to see where Marve is, if he gets a full offseason to prepare and win the job. Hopefully he would play a little more under control if he was won the job, and wasn’t trying to do everything with his small windows of oppurtunities.
Ditto
Pardon, finger fumble. Anyway I agree Marve is NOT the guy. Yes he’s had tough luck but he WAS the guy in 2010 before getting hurt and nothing he did impressed me then to say, “if only Marve didn’t get hurt.” He was mediocre. He played plenty this year and whether it was diminished physical ability due to his injuries, that is the guy he is now, and it was mediocre to poor. Sorry, it’s gotta be someone else.
Henry is the only one who gave me some hope for the future last year but he is now a big question mark. TerBush also did nothing this year to impress. Mediocre QB on a mediocre team. There were painfully long periods where you knew he could not move the ball and we didn’t. Can’t throw it downfield.
I don't see an Elliot-Ter Bush comparison...
Especially when Marve is so similar in many ways to Elliot, with the athleticism and tendency to turn the ball over. TerBush either can not or will not throw the ball down field. He’s not managing the game, it’s being managed by the play calling. He’s being hidden. That was not the case with Elliot and it’s not the case when Marve is on the field.
TerBush’s interception totals are misleading, as it’s very difficult to give up an interception on a bubble screen or a quarterback draw.
x2
CTB’s interception on the first play against ND seals the game in the first 15 seconds. But his stat looks pretty darn good coz he “engineered” 4th qtr scoring drives against ND’s backups. These are all overlooked.
Book it:
We will have a FOUR-quarterback rotation next season. And all of them get to start (a quarter)!
/sarcasm
To your call once more we rally....
Book this:
The first ever formation with four quarterbacks on the field! They won’t know who’s passing, who’s running or who’s receiving! All part of Hope’s genius. I’m just kidding of course, all four quarterbacks will be forced into running read option runs up the middle for 4 yard losses.
Lots of Depth....No Star
I’ve stated this before, but Purdue goes as the Quarterback goes. I don’t think any of our upperclassmen are good enough to lead us to a Top 4/5 BIG finish. That’s why I think we’ve seen the rotation the last several years. They all have their good and their bad.
Best case scenario would be to have Henry completely recover and move to the slot. This would allow us to use him in a wildcat like role (hopefully he throws it some too!). I think he could do a lot of good things for us in this role, since he might be our most versatile player.
This would leave Terbush (maybe Marve) as our starter. Hopefully our offense gets a little more creative, our RB’s improve (we are going to need a solid, maybe great, running game), and our O-Line becomes more consistent. We absolutely need to throw the ball downfield at least to loosen the defense up.
Did Henry not redshirt last year? You have him listed as a Junior, and I thought he was a freshmen on the ‘10 team. Maybe he was a redshirt freshman in ’10, so he couldn’t take a redshirt last year?
I believe he already used his redshirt during the '09 season

Correct
His first season on campus was 2009. He was technically the third stringer behind Elliott and TerBush, but he never got into a game and redshirtted.
Ah, the days of one quarterback…
A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance
HammerAndRails, SBNation's Boilermaker Blog
Only 2 Quarterbacks
There are only 2 quarterbacks on the roster that qualify as Big Ten quarterbacks, Marve and Appleby. Terbush is a MAC level QB. The others can’t pass well at all – Purdue needs to pass and be able to complete long passes to open up the game – that’s the only way we have ever been successful.
Henry, Robinson and Marshall are all candidates for safety or replacing Siller
Actually, I think we all missed out on Hope's grand vision
If we stop being so rosy and just think carefully and realistically, we really have the right number of QBs. This is why Coach Hope is the genius coach and getting paid in the millions, possibly the 2nd-highest paid employee on campus and ahead of many Nobel laureates or university president.
You see, Marve won’t get a sixth year; Henry will be slow in his rehab and isn’t at full strength by August; CTB doesn’t hit the books enough and is either academically ineligible or suspended from the team a la OJ Ross; Aloyis Gray switches to WR; so we are left with Sean Robinson and the two frosh in Appleby and Marshall, possibly red-shirting one, which is just about right.
Long live the genius Hope!
