Bryson Scott---OH MY!
For those who didn't hear on Twitter....Bryson Scott dropped 46 points on 12/9. I haven't found out who his team played but that is ridiculous. 2013 complementing 2012 will give Matt Painter the deepest team he's ever had with legitimate depth/talent at EVERY position.
Also of note, Scout.com ranks Purdue 2013 the #2 class in the nation behind only North Carolina:

What do you mean by 'with who we are targeting'
Painter isn’t really actively targeting anyone else beyond Willis. I think with no major pressure at any position, he’s taking a wait-and-see approach.

What do you think the odds are that Willis recommits to Purdue?
I have no idea what’s going on with that situation, is Painter still aggressively pursuing him?

he was at IU today i believe...

Doesn't mean much.
Harris was at Mackey when we beat Ohio State and he didn’t come here.
he is interested in both IU and UK...
That may have something to do with why he was there…

and it’ll be the biggest slap in the face if he chooses IU
I'm saying that our class is close to set, unless we get Willis
Simply stating that he’s the only legit target left that we are currently, currently mind you, going after. Just adding him may not keep us in the top 10. Unless everyone moves up the ranks obviously, which can def happen.
I hadn't considered that...
but at the end of the day I don’t think it will matter. Matt Painter will have his deepest team ever in a few years.

True, but Bryson and Kendall are playing out of their minds,
I would not be surprised to see both of them go up in the rankings when they are updated. Basil Smotherman has been quiet, but he has another two years to develop his game. From what I read he has tons of potential but he just isn’t being agressive. With Willis, we will probably have a top 10 class at the worst. Without him, I could still see us having a top 10 class with the way Stephens and Scott are playing.
You must be a real fan with your perpetual optimism
When recruits play well, you look for their rankings to go up; when he doesn’t play well, well, he still has two yrs. When they play well, you’d say they are talented (and very possibly under-rated); when they don’t play well, you say he has potential (or not working hard enough or not aggressive enough). Hopefully just don’t trash him or throw him under the bus if he turns out to be a Bade.
I am definitely worried about Basil, don't get me wrong.
It’s kind of hard to say how I feel about everything in little posts here and there. I am confidant in Scott and Stephens remaining around where they are in the rankings and possibly moving up. They have just been playing at a high level on a consistent basis.
With Basil it is a bit different. He has a lot of potential with his athleticism and size, but it seems he is really raw right now. I am definitely worried that he may not turn out as highly as he was touted earlier this year (I think he was a top 40 recruit according to espn). I really would prefer us not getting another player who is too passive on offense. Unless Smotherman becomes a Kramer level defender, I would prefer all of our players being able to score effectively if called upon.
Yeah I don't understand why he seems to take such a big step back
I know he changes school and his dad is no longer the coach, and that his new school is a lot more competitive than the old ones, but still, only 2 pts a game in high school for a former Top 40 recruit (as you say)?
BTW, Kramer is able to score effectively too if called upon. Remember the Texas A&M game where he scored 17, including the GW basket, and put the team on his back?
True about Kramer.
He just didn’t do it often, and that was the point I was making. Kramer mostly let his teammates do the scoring even though he was more than capable of doing it himself.
He wasn't asked to be a scorer...
His sole focus was defending their best player… and he did it WONDERFULLY! I like guys that are willing to give up their stat line to do what is asked of them by the coaches, and what is best for the team!

Well I looked it up
He was as high as #26 according to ESPN.
Yeah, I remembered that too
But now it seems like he couldn’t even make it to #126 … what happened?
In recruiting... especially when we are talking about Sophomores in high school...
You have to take into account the players they have around them, and what their coaches are asking them to do… I have no idea about any of these players as far as this is concerned, but if Basil has a lot of talent around him, and he is doing what is asked of him and not forcing things, then I don’t see a problem… now if he is their #1 star player, and is underperforming and costing them games because he is not being more aggressive, THAT is when I have a problem!!!

Well, he is a junior now
And, even if there are TONS of talents around (arguably the best high school bball program in the country), you don’t see Greg Oden getting 2 pts and 3 rebs even if the team is winning.
In any case, I am not trying to throw Basil under the bus or anything. More so just try to understand what is the reason for his struggle (or, what justifies such a lofty ranking a year ago?).
Totally agree.
I was just saying there’s really no relevance to say we are #2 right now. 2012+2013 will be a very very nice core.
Nice core, I'd like to see another big
Coz when you look at the 7 players we have for 2012/13, our guards (RJ, Rapheal, Scott and Stephens) are undoubtedly better and ranked a lot higher than our forwards/posts (Basil, Hammons, Simpson).
I also wonder if it deters any 2014 SG/wing to join us when he realizes he is likely to not get any PT behind AJ, Davis and Stephens…unless he plans to be red-shirted.
I'm sure the scouting agencies understand how difficult it is for bigs to make that transition
I agree with you, though. Another big man in the 2013 class would be awesome. Derek Willis would be nice, but he doesn’t seem like the kind of low-post player that we’ll need. Besides, with schools like Kentucky and Louisville scouting him… I don’t think he’ll be coming here anyway.

Willis is a lot more like Robbie Hummel than Hale is,
His current coach uses Willis as their back up point guard. I would LOVE a big man with those kind of skills. We will have plenty of talented depth with height in the upcoming years. Willis would give us a lineup of Hammons, Willis/Hale, Lawson/Simpson/Smotherman, Scott/RJ, and Stephens/TJ/AJ. That is a very talented and experienced lineup with a lot of potential match-up problems for teams.
As much as I would like both of them to improve enough to be viable options..
I don’t see it happening. Painter doesn’t seem to trust Sandi enough to leave him in for more than a few minutes a game and I can’t blame him. Sandi is still really raw. Carrol is just too timid. I don’t know if Painter sees something different in practice. Carrol just has the look and behavior of someone who is scared to have a highlight reel. That is strange considering he was a pretty solid contributor for his basketball team in high school.
Big difference in high school and college
In high school, you are the 20-10 star and can do no wrong. In college, you got yelled at constantly b/c you aren’t doing what the coaches want. That hurts confidence. Some kids take it well and learn; some kids are hurt and never recover. Sadly, TC seems to be the latter case now.
He played well yesterday...
There was no moment yesterday that stuck out as a “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!?” moment, like he normally has… little steps… I know…

Need baby step to get his confidence back. I hope Ryno can teach him how he goes from a scared shooter at the beginning of the season to shooting with a world of confidence in the B1G season.

Ronnie
Ronnie’s 23 look a little sad against Brysons also they lost and Bryson won big.Kendall was sick didnt go to school on Wensday he played less than 10 minutes but scored 13 by the way at 6-7 I would call him a big with 2 years of growth still on the table.Basil scored only two points.Davis,Simpson,Stephens and Hammons play tonight 12/10/2011.How deep will this team be also I read where Jabri Parker still has Purdue on his list.
Where did you ready that Jabari Parker is interested in Purdue
I don’t think there’s any relationship there…I think a year and a half ago Painter went in to watch him play. But there has been nothing since.

Stephens
The shooting guard we recruited very well may end up being a forward by the time he arrives on campus in two years.
Meh, Ronnie's 23 doesn't look bad...
considering that he is the point guard on the #1 ranked team in the state and the 17th rank program (maxpreps, com) nationally. Some of these kids are putting up huge numbers in big fish/small pond scenarios; RJ is doing it on a good team that is getting everyone’s best shot night in and night out.
So what's Rapheal's # now that he moves to a prep?
He was a 30-ppg scorer as a junior at a 4A Ft. Wayne school, right?
was averaging about 24 pts a game before Oak Hill
His lowest pt total was against Oak Hill when he only had four points, but considering he was fighting the flu and didn’t practice leading up to that game or even warm up with the team, then that’s probably excusable. the game after Oak Hill he had 23. the kid can score, regardless of the situation.

Well I know he was sick recently... But!
http://lalulakers.weebly.com/results.html
According their website, he is still putting up huge points. They only have a handful but they seemed to be consistent 23+ points and 5 or so rebounds a night. I’m guessing he leads the team in scoring from the few results they have up. From what I can tell Hanner Perea and Rapheal do most of the scoring, so Jay Simpson seems to be more of a role player currently. One game result mentioned he had 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists though.
Sounds like Jay will be red-shirted next year
…to continue Painter’s tradition of red-shirting one player every year (John Hart, Sandi, AJ, Hale).
Assuming no transfers, next year front court would have Hammons, TC, Sandi, Lawson, and Hale already. Add Byrd and Barlow at the SF and there just isn’t much frontcourt minutes. Byrd and Barlow theoretically can play the guards, but then with the three Johnsons, Davis and John Hart I don’t see the Bs (Barlow and Byrd) moving to the backcourt. In short, we just have no PT for Jay.
Anyhow, looks like we’ll be very deep next year! I really hope Painter unleash the “press squad” of Lawson, Hale, Barlow, and any two of the three Johnsons and do full-court press every now and then to disrupt the other team. Go Boilers!
I'm thinking
Hammons, Lawson, Hale, Barlow, and TJ as our press squad

I thought speed trumps size when you try to press, no?
This will mean we run up-and-down the floor like crazy, a la VCU. What’s a 7-footer gonna do?

I dont think Jay will redshirt
Barlow will play point with RJ backup
The 2 Johnsons & Davis will be at the 2
The only forward with experience (besides Byrd) will be Lawson, who will start with Hale behind him. I think Byrd will get a little more playing time next year but not much.
With Jay being 6’9’’, 235 lbs, he’s got 20 pounds on the other forwards. With all the inexperience at the forward position, I can see the minutes being dished out evenly like this year’s 5 position until someone takes over the starting role.
I’m guessing Hammons will start after a few games if not from the beginning with the hanson brothers backing him up.
You think so?
I think RJ will probably start as PG with TJ being the backup. Afterall, TJ played point in highschool. Barlow could play the point, but he makes some poor decisions.
He could start
just never know how some players will transition from high school to college. Hope he is good enough, but I would guess at least for the non-conference games they would ease him in…. never know though.
It'll be strange to start RJ over TJ
The way I see it, since TJ is now technically LewJack’s backup, I expect him to start next season, at least in the beginning. I think it is absurd to think that RJ will be better than TJ right off the bat.
I know it isn’t accurate, but just based on recruiting ranking, TJ was around 45 while RJ is around 85. Not to mention TJ has an extra 2 yrs of experience in college. To think that RJ can overtake his older brother from Day One is probably too unrealistic.
Well Painter brought TJ in to be a combo guard I presume
He plays the 1 and the 2 positions. I don’t think you generally want a combo guard being your starting PG unless you don’t have a dedicated PG. In Painter’s case he will. This isn’t to say I think TJ will be worse than his younger brother, it is just that RJ is a dedicated PG, and TJ isn’t.
Why can't a combo guard start over a pure PG?
If anything I’ve learned from Matt Painter (whether he’s right or not), it’s that he just plays the best players (from practice). He isn’t afraid to start Kramer and Byrd at the 4, despite their height disadvantage. When Hummel went down and everyone thinks Bade is the natural replacement simply based on height, Painter simply refused and just stuck with whoever played the hardest in practice. When we all think he should give more PT to the Hansons last year, he just kept playing JJ. I think his msg is always: practice hard and you earn your PT. I don’t care if I have to start five 6’6 or below players as long as they are my best players.
Pumped about our classes
but wake me when we get a top ranked big man. Until then, we won’t be a complete team. If we are going to be gaurd orriented, then we need a superstar “carry-us-on-his-back” guy that can not be stopped in crunch time.
by OldSchoolStyle on Dec 11, 2011 12:03 PM EST reply actions
We will see what happens with Hammons.
A 7 footer with experience playing the best highschools in the nation sounds like a nice piece to develop into a beast in the interior. If JJ has a nice NBA career that should help out too. He could sell the idea he turned an average 4 star recruit into a solid NBA player.
However, Painter just seems to have a lot more luck recruiting higher ranked guards compared to big men. Bryson Scott was a very nice get. Kendall was too, even though he has apparently grown more into a forward rather than a guard. It will also be nice to see how Davis does when he gets here next year. He lead the entire state of Indiana last year in scoring, so he may end up being the kind of player you were describing. From what I read though he needs to develop his outside game. He scores a majority of his points by barreling into the paint and drawing fouls (something we could use right now).
I think it's more just a numbers game.
There are just way fewer bigs out there. There’s a lot more 6-2 guys than there are 6-10 guys. So of course coaches are going to be able to pull more guards
