National Signing Day: Welcome Our New Boilermakers

All we are looking for today is five pieces of paper, faxed to the athletic offices. It seems so simple, but in reality it holds the future of our basketball program. Today four young men (maybe five?) will officially join the Purdue family. Today they become Boilermakers.

Rapheal Davis - The 6'5" swingman has been committed forever it seems. He started at Ft. Wayne South, committed originally as a freshman, and now he is a senior a LaLumiere up in LaPorte. he looks like a solid small forward.

Ronnie Johnson - With Lewis Jackson graduating this year we need a point guard. Enter Terone Johnson's little brother. We'll get to see an early battle or two this season between him and Kevin Ferrell.

Jay Simpson - Our future starting power forward at 6'9" 250. Those numbers alone make me salivate having him as a rebounder/enforcer in the paint, especially with the next young man beside him.

A.J. Hammons - Behold, a true center at 7' 260. Size has been a problem for Purdue in the past, but will no longer be with Hammons and Simpson at the 4 and 5 spots.

Welcome to the family, young men. You are now Boilermakers for life.

Of course, we're hoping to add one more name to this list, and that's why this is an Open Thread. Gary Harris, come on down. We'll welcome you to West Lafayette with open arms.

Suddenly I have visions of the entire basketball team competing on NBC’s “The Sing Off”. Could be the dawning of a new age in Purdue Basketball, lulling our opponents into complacency with delicious 5 part harmonies.

Would it be safe to assume that Ronnie is inked up already then?

If he was supposed to sign it (sign & fax, or have an assistant coach there to do it in person) before school started this morning, then he would already be done by now then?

This is agonizing

You have to think that the fact that both his parents are Boilermakers will be a huge part in his decision. How could he not grow up as a Purdue fan? Of course I guess I take for granted that everyone else who graduated from Purdue is as rabid as myself (and everyone else who posts here at this fine website). I am already starting early on my 16 month old daughter. She enjoys sitting on my lap watching football and now recently basketball and regardless of what team is playing she says “Purdue, daddy”. My Dad, two of my uncles and my aunt are all Purdue grads and I grew up wanting to go to Purdue.

Brainwashed children

My wife and I (Purdue alums, met at Purdue) have both decided not to force Purdue on our daughter, but we’ve done everything you can possibly do to influence an unborn daughter. LOL. My wife is due to deliver next week, we have a purdue onesie (sp?) in the hospital bag. She has at least 10 Purdue outfits already, ranging in size from newborn to 1 year. Purdue pacifiers, blankets, shoes, everything you can think of. Did you know there’s even a Purdue kid’s book?

http://www.amazon.com/Hello-Purdue-Pete-Aimee-Aryal/dp/1932888306

Yeah, it’s prominently displayed right in front of the bookshelf we made for her. Are we overzealous? Perhaps, but such is the pride of a Purdue Boilermaker.

This site is the result of brainwashing

I was brought home from the hospital in a Purdue outfit after I was born. It was in the middle of Purdue’s only 10-win season in football.

I told my dad when i was very young I wanted to go to Notre Dame and he corrected me by saying it was fine, but he would only pay Purdue tuition.

My parents got me Purdue football season tickets when I was eight in 1987 and I’ve had them every year since (except 1994 when the money went to my sister’s wedding instead)

A guy on Twitter 'G2 Blog'

Is claiming Harris has chosen Mich. St. and is just waiting to tell Izzo:

“Posted on the G2, Gary Harris has chosen Michigan State, waiting for opportunity to call Izzo to let him know.”

“Izzo is traveling / preparing for the Carrier Classic, that’s the main reason for the delay in announcing Gary’s decision.”

Here’s a link to the guys blog: http://gamblersgazette.blogspot.com/

I don’t really know who this guy is but he seems overwhelmingly confident about his source. who knows…

by Boylemaker88 on Nov 9, 2011 10:14 AM EST reply actions

Traveling?

If MSU was a done deal, he would be aware of Izzo’s travel plans and an announcement would be in the can – it would not be held up waiting for a plane to land.

But I’m not going to trust that some blog I’ve never heard of has some inside information that somehow the national recruiting services and the local reporters somehow don’t have access to. I’d say there’s a high probability that he’s full of shit. Good for him though, I’m sure he’ll pick up a few Twitter followers.

Most people seem to think that MSU is the leader for whatever reason, so claiming you have an exclusive source who has told you that he’s picked MSU is a pretty safe bet.

If Jeff Rabjohns, Brian Neubert or any of the well-known national guys (Evan Daniels, David Telep etc…) say something, then I’ll listen. Otherwise, I’d just ignore it.

GH would(will) be an awesome get

But part of me thinks we have already won as far as the 2012 recruiting goes. We have a monster PF coming in and a monster at center coming in. Even Miller with Cardinal didn’t have the potential that Simpson and AJH have.

If all we get is this Fab 4, instead of a new Fab 5, so be it. We are still going to be great.

by bresch on Nov 9, 2011 10:30 AM EST reply actions

Agree

It’s what I’ve said for months if we could get our true 5 and we did in AJ. Can’t freaking wait to see Painter mold him.

GH would simply be icing on the cake.

by JHetfield99 on Nov 9, 2011 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

I agree we have a solid class for 2012 already

But it’s time for Purdue to start connecting on some of these big time recruits. If we want to take that next step as a program, to an elite level, we need to land a 5-star every now and then. In most cases, it’s usually a domino effect. You get one, you start landing others. Gary Harris could be that domino. I think landing him would go a long way in pursuing other big-time recruits (i.e. Derek Willis) as we move forward.

This class is great as is. It could be something truly special with GH.

This is turning into PainterGate once again,

only this time our program isn’t ruined if we don’t get our way. Seriously though, take a step back and analyze the situation with regards to past situations (mainly PainterGate). Twitter is a double black diamond ski slope. Everyone can post their thoughts and if they have a blog they’re immediately deemed credible. Everyone goes bonkers over what one attention seeker says merely because he has a blog name attached to it.

Take a step back and step down from the ledge if you’re there. We’re fine. That’s it and that’s all. When Gary Harris steps to the podium and says his peace, we’ll know.

Painter said that neither player wants to red-shirt and Painter will probably wait another week or two and use them in practice and go from there. Of course this means they can’t play those first 2 or 3 games. but that is what I saw from Washburn

by jffiv on Nov 9, 2011 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

Agree.

Although I wonder how much of it is nerves. Yeah these guys have played in big games I’m sure, but can anything really prepare you for Mackey? Not to mention that you’re playing to earn your minutes, and hopefully avoid the redshirt. They both have the raw talent, I have no doubt that Painter and his staff will develop both of them into big time contributors. Just look at Marcius!

by AAMB Boiler on Nov 9, 2011 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Marcius may not be the best example

Maybe JJ. I haven’t seen anything from Marcius that tells me he’ll be a big time contributor.

by chops1221 on Nov 9, 2011 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Good point

JJ is probably a better example. In my shortsightedness I was just thinking of what improvement he seems to have made since last year. Last year choosing between him and Bade was like choosing between Marve and Terbush in football. Either way you’re guaranteed numerous mistakes, most likely resulting points for the oppositon. In the two games thus far, Marcius looks vastly improved, and he’s not getting pushed around.

I am very excited to welcome this class...

It seems like a very well-rounded class with a lot of potential. 2 Big men, a point guard that (gasp!) has been known to lock-down the unstoppable Yogi, an athletic forward… things look bright for the future of Purdue basketball. Painter seems to have done an excellent job of putting together pieces that will continue the success the team has seen recently. With Gary or not, year after year, Painter seems to be recruiting to continually maintain a solid foundation for the program.

On a side note, I prefer our situation to that of IU’s. Painter is consistently funneling in lots of potential which he has proven to be able to develop. Crean has yet to prove he can win in the Big Ten or develop his players. I cannot wait to watch how things unfold. My feeling is that the bowel “Movement” will be taking a big dump throughout their years at IU, never living up to the expectations of the wackos in Bloomington and around the state. I am so glad Painter has returned the basketball program to the level it is today… and can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Go Boilers!

IMO humble and worthless opinion

Painter is the better coach, IU has more a slightly more talented class…all in all should equal out pretty well and finally return the rivalry back to where it should be, with both teams in the upper half of the conference annually.

Gary Harris / MSU Update (via US Naval Intelligence Wireless Semaphore)

Low on fuel , the Michigan State team plane was forced to ditch after a missed approach to the USS Carl Vinson this afternoon. The attempt was waved-off when it was discovered that the flight deck was fouled by a Roy Williams photo-op.

Any announcement regarding where Gary Harris will attend college next year will be delayed until Coach Izzo is fished out of San Diego Bay.

Low?

That would imply that Purdue was the 25-28th best team in the country. That, if anything, is a bit high compared to where they are on most pre-season polls and B10 projections. I would have guessed an 8-9 seed.

I’d rather it be Slick Cal’s group. just because I don’t want to face him, because from everything I’ve gathered, he comes from a family that does things the right way, and I don’t want to hate him. but if he goes to IU or MSU, I will kind of have to, at least a little bit, hate him.

but the real paradox is, if he gets pulled into Slick Cal’s enterprise, there goes his reputation for doing things the right way.

This video footage from the LeBron James Skills Academy has the following caption, written back in August:

Gary Harris is ESPN’s top shooting guard from the class of 2012. Harris is a 6’4 guard from Indiana with offers from Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, Ohio State, and Illinois amongst others. These highlights are from the 2011 LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio.

Just to muddy the water on GH a bit...

I’m a Psych Professor and the research on persuasion and decision making says this:

All other things being equal, there is a clear advantage to those persuasive messages that came first or last. The stuff in the middle tends to get lost. In this case then we’re talking about MSU getting the last shot at convincing GH. (I don’t remember which of the “Final Four” came first)

More importantly, the research further finds that the communicator that goes first has the advantage IF there is a great deal of time that passes between the messages and the decision. For example, visiting Purdue, IU, KU and then MSU and then not making a decision for a few months would benefit Purdue.

Unfortunately, in a situation where the decision needs to be made soon after the last message is rec’d, there is a strong tendency for the last message rec’d to win out. With GH’s decision being made so soon after his final visit to MSU, this research would predict an MSU-LOI sometime soon.

No doubt this is an over-analysis – especially since the first words in this explanation were “all other things being equal” but, as a dweeb myself, it’s interesting.

If there’s a real world application here for us tho it would be this…if research holds, the longer GH delays before making his decision the worse for MSU.

by VegasBaby on Nov 9, 2011 5:36 PM EST reply actions

Smooge was a top 40 player according to a lot of websites. JJ was around 50th I believe. Hummel was the lowest recruit of the Big Three (plus The Traitor) and he was around 70th.
