Plea to the Paint Crew
OK, I know this is going to be really damn hard to coordinate, but I need a motivator from the Paint Crew to help me out. I'm alumni and I live 3 hours away so, alas, I can't do this, but if someone championed this project it would be hugely, immensely, ridiculously awesome. I don't like the split Paint Crew myself, BUT it does propose some advantages. I'm sure a WHOSE HOUSE? OUR HOUSE back and forth has been thought out and that's cool don't get me wrong. BUT, what if you guys could work out the Drew Brees pregame chant before tip? Talk about freakin' awesome. I know not easy at all, but I think many would agree it would be worth it. Anyhow, here's how it would go:
Side 1: ONE
Side 2: TWO
Side 1: WIN
Side 2: FOR YOU
Side 1: THREE
Side 2: FOUR
Side 1: WIN
Side 2: SOME MORE
Side 1: FIVE
Side 2: SIX
Side 1: WIN
Side 2: FOR KICKS
Side 1: SEVEN
Side 2: EIGHT
Side 1: WIN
Side 2: IT'S GREAT
Side 1: NINE
Side 2: TEN
Side 1: WIN
Side 2: AGAIN
Side 1: WIN
Side 2: AGAIN
Side 1: WIN
Side 2: AGAIN
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
To recap, side 1 goes, "One, Win, Three, Win, Five, Win, Seven, Win, Nine, Win, Win, Win, AAAAAHHHH!!
Side 2 goes "Two, For you, Four, Some more, Six, For kicks, Eight, It's great, Ten, Again, Again, Again, AAAAHHHH!!!
OK Seriously tell me that wouldn't be worth it....I know no one really loves the split Paint Crew, but let's use it to our advantage....I feel like since Brees is a Boilermaker, we have the right to use the pregame chant. Who's with me????

Never thought we would be using Brees for basketball but this would be sick
This is a Great Idea
I was trying to thing when the best time to do it would be…seems to me the most natural points to do it (either right before the team comes out at the 5 min mark or right before tip-off) all have pre-coordinated things that already go with them (i.e.-Transformers theme or Boiler Brass). Any thoughts?

Got Chills
Done well, this would be sick.
I think this could be a good one before the start of the 2nd half. Get the student section pumped again before the half starts.
What if they split it up?
Like… doing a portion of it over the the announcements of each of the opponents starting players.

Like I said, I know this wouldn’t be easy but it would be really worth it. Just would have to start with a small group on each side that has choreographed this and then you get everyone else on the same page. As far as when to do it, I don’t think we should overthink it. For obvious reasons, both teams should be out on the floor and not in the locker room. We need to let it sink in to both teams (for opposite reasons, of course). I think splitting it up between announcing the players would diminish it a bit. This needs to build up and you guys need to feed off each other and go absolutely berzerk (sp?) at the end. I think the right way to do this is before tip. Before the band goes into the pretip song. Someone help me out what that’s called. When the crowd goes AAAAHHHH!!! that should be the cue for the band to start that song. Then chaos ensues right before tip off, which is the way it should be. Thoughts?

It's a fifteen second chant...
It wouldn’t necessarily need to be limited to once a game, and it’d be good to have it on TV at some point every game.
Good point
Definitely would be good to catch it on TV, but you can’t overdo it. Otherwise it becomes not as cool. Maybe right before tip and again right before the start of the second half?
by One of these days on Nov 3, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe, say, doing it after the ball is put in play from the under four timeout in the second half would work well.
by Ray Williams? on Nov 3, 2011 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions
Definite possibility
Twice a game is about the right amount I think. Right before tip and right after the under 4 TO in 2nd half sounds like appropriate timing to me. Lovin’ it…

Split Paint Crew - Timing
I love this idea. But it requires tight coordination.
One big problem with a split Paint Crew is synchronizing the cheers. The groups are far enough apart to introduce slight delay as the sound travels across the arena. This makes it tough to tightly coordinated a rapid fire, back-and-forth cheer properly. This delay is the reason that back-and-forth cheers in football stadiums are so slow.
To address this, is it possible to use the center court scoreboard as a time/cadence keeper? This could be done via a subtle character or symbol the the Paint Crew members would recognize, but wouldn’t interfere with the primary content on the monitor. The character would serve the same purpose as a marching band leader’s baton. Back me up on this Danulas – the band, sometimes separated from each other by as much as 100 yards, keep time based on what they see, not what they hear.
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
agree
maybe a idea to help with delay and progress of chant is not to switch “each line”…so Side 1 (1,2)…Side 2 (Win, for you)…sides repeat 2 lines until Win-Again which would be a back and forth
Let's not overthink this...
If the whole PC starts with a build up “Ooooooohhhh” then that can be the unofficial “here it comes” signal. Then side 1 just goes into it. If each side knows their part, it will go perfectly. It will take some perfecting, no doubt, but after a couple games you’ll have it down. Don’t mess with perfection. If you keep it the same as Brees, people are more likely to make the connection. Watching the clock will only make it more awkward sounding. Side one counts off odd numbers and says win. Side 2 counts off even numbers and the appropriate rhyme. Know your part and go with it. Don’t make it more complicated than it already is or it’ll never get off the ground.
by One of these days on Nov 3, 2011 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions
Just offering a colaborative suggestion.
I wasn’t suggesting watching the clock – but a special character to indicate speed and cadence that the Paint Crew staff would control.
This is just my two cents. I’m sure if this cheer is implemented, many other ideas will be tried and they’ll figure out what works best for them.
I do applaud you for looking for a silver lining to the split crew. As they say, “if you can’t fix it – feature it!!”
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
Why a special character?
Why not just put the words up on each side as they’re supposed to be chanted?
That would be fine too.
I suggested the character in the event that other content was playing on the monitor (they gotta sell lots of Ad space to pay for MP’s big contract).
The character idea provides a visual clue without pre-empting something else.
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
Very good idea sir
I hope this can be implemented, because everyone would so pumped up after it, and I bet the players would be surprised too

No worries.
I’m quite pleased with the IU degree I received. The thing I like most about this, though, is that it could naturally be used by the Paint Crew without worrying about copying anyone else. For example, the “I believe that we will win” chant is great, but if the PC used it, they’d be ripping it off of San Diego State, Utah State, etc. With this chant, you’re ripping it off from Brees, who is a Boiler and I don’t believe he will mind. Done correctly, it could be awesome. Also, just FYI, I have a good friend who knows this year’s Paint Crew president and this was forwarded to him.
Word.....
Amen on the copying front. Brees is one of our own, so this just makes too much sense. Plus it’s really dang cool. Whether you’re a Boiler or not you have to be willing to admit that. Thanks for spreading the good word man.
by One of these days on Nov 3, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions
It's harder for me to admit that it's cool...
as a Colts fan! But, I don’t think there’s any doubt that it is and, this done successfully, would get the crowd rowdy nice and early. No problem. It was too good of an idea not to pass along.
it's worth mentioning:
Brees got the idea from the Marines. but they’re pretty awesome role models too. so it’s really a tribute to both our Armed Forces and Breesus.
To your call once more we rally....
I feel like we'd have a hard time pulling that off
It’s a good idea, but it just seems like it would need to go faster than a group as big as the Paint Crew could do. I think it would work better if it was led by a small group and the Paint Crew could just feed off their energy. Like (and this is just off the top of my head, feel free to revise) if the Paint Crew held tryouts after the lottery to find 10-15 members who would be the loudest and most enthusiastic, and let them lead it out on the court. Have them out at midcourt going crazy so everyone could see them, and have their chant going through the speakers, and let the Paint Crew join in, but not have to lead it. It would be awesome to get to lead a big cheer like that from the court before a big game, although it would obviously limit when we could do it.
Much as I love that chant in a huddle...
the Paint Crew is just too far apart to do something that tight on the call-answer timings.
Although reading this did give me an idea for another cheer: for those of you that know it, it’s the “I believe that we will win” cheer.
Instead of having 2-3 leaders, though, we use a whole side of the PC as the call, and the other side answers, then both sides do it at the end. It’s a little slower and simpler than “Win…Again” so we would be better able to hold it together across the court. I realize it loses some of the luster of being a Purdue original, but I think the split up version adds plenty of our own flavor. Thoughts?

I’m a former Marine. Since Bress got this from the USMC, let’s run it the way they do. Start off with training wheels. ONE GUY goes, “When I say one, you say two. When I say win, you say for you. ONE.” Respond “TWO.” “WIN.” Respond “FOR YOU” Rinse and repeat.

Watch the NFL try to claim that they ‘own’ the cheer since Brees is an employee of the Saints, and thus the league.
Evil Bastards.
"There's no hope until Hope is gone!"
If that's the case,
That’s a bogus argument since it was borrowed from the USMC. Replace “win” with “kill” and voila. Bona fide Marine Corps running cadence. Not that a bogus argument has ever stopped the NFL before, though… Yes, I did sense your sarcasm…

This
We could just start at a pre-set time (like X minutes before tip) and it would be easy to follow. Maybe it wouldn’t be perfect the first game, but it would catch on pretty quick.
Also, I think only once before the game starts would be good, any more would probably seem overdone.
It really would be a waste to not have it on during the broadcasts, if it works.

To your call once more we rally....
a good example of why this CAN work
is the fact that even with so much going on in games, enough people from the PC remember every time to ask “HOW MUCH TIME IS LEFT?” just before 1:00 comes up in the 2nd half and Carson Tucker responds, “One minute, one minute to play” and they say “THANK YOU”.
To your call once more we rally....
wasn't aware that's where that came from
but it’s not just the band that does it either.
To your call once more we rally....
No, but the band started/reminds/cues it.

Anyone got a way to get ahold of the PC Pres. He would be the best bet to get this started. It would catch on quick. If one of the many BB band members (including me) lets the rest of the band know, you have a very strong nucleus of yellers on one side already!
It's been done
The President has seen it and we are willing to try. Were just worried about the time it takes the sound to travel
I see
I like the suggestion of some kind of ticker or symbol that indicates when each side should cheer but that starts to get very logistical
Maybe get Purdue Pete to stand in the middle of the court and point to each side for the cheer. That could work.
He’d point rapidly but the cheer would be in time. Maybe a point with each hand. Just back and forth. I even know one of the Purdue pete
I like that idea
Very simple but it would help us a lot.
Nice
Pete better start working on his cardio if he wants the cheer to go Brees-fast.

I think it's okay to let the cheer slow down from the tempo Brees does

Timing
A lot has been said about this, but I think you’ll find it works its self out pretty quickly. Mackey is alot smaller than a football stadium.
Also, consider adding a gesture to go with each section of the cheer. Something simple, like the fist pump that goes with the 3rd down in football. It also adds a natural rhythm (after all, this did start as a running cadence in the maybe corps).
That way, it not only sounds cool, but it would be visually awesome as well. Imagine a wide angle shot of mackey with this cheer going full speed and the fist pumps alternating sides… It could end up being an iconic cheer in college BB.

Also
This may be a dumb idea, but I know that at least one visitor of this site writes for the Exponent. i think one of the best way to spread these kind of ideas would be to put them in the paper. I know that the PC heads put out the info sheet before every game but that doesn’t mean everyone gets a chance to see it. If they published something in the exponent that possibly introduces people to a new cheer each week. It would only take up like one column of the sports page. They could diagram out the two side and explain each side’s individual cheers. It could be the weekly cheers section. I dunno just brainstorming. . .
I dug through some old post and I found the username of the person who said they write for the exponent:
dt2332 Would it be possible to advertise this in the Exponent or would that be a bad idea?
Use the scoreboard to lead it
Show a video of someone on the scoreboard, like Brees himself, doing one part, yelling into the camera. The Paint Crew can respond. Then, you might actually get the alumni into it.
Down the road you could have guests do it – maybe on Senior Day the seniors lead it on the scoreboard.
That’s not a bad idea. Not if I would prefer that, but I like it.

I'll leave it in the capable hands
of the Paint Crew to execute. Keep it simple. Keep it under control. Make it awesome. Using Purdue Pete to point back and forth is really not a bad idea at all. Is it that easy to get this on the jumbotron? I think if it’s just the students going back and forth it’s a little better than getting the powers that be involved. See “Makers, All” as an example. The more control the students have over it, the better. Keep it amongst yourselves in the beginning and let it pick up steam. Hopefully, it’ll just get better and better as time goes on.

It just fits with how disingenuous Dollar Bill Burke has been through this whole process. I didn’t think it was possible to kill the Paint Crew, but Burke may have managed it, or at least come damn close. Not that he cares, he can charge more for his new “recliner seats” and fuck the students.

Are ya’ll gonna get another try at this? I noticed on Friday that the band started playing right after the introductions of the coaches and didn’t give the student section a fair shot at making the cheer work.
from what I understand,
