I write for the Exponent and I got a chance to go to practice yesterday for Purdue media day and I figured I'd share what I saw throughout practice.
First off, I have been saying it all day, Anthony Johnson looks phenomenal...offensively. Coach Painter said there is 4 or 5 guys ahead of him in his positions (point or SG). Throughout practice he was scoring at will on Barlow and Terone. I know Terone isn't the greatest defender but AJ crossed him once and left Terone's jock on the 3 point line. AJ had the touch to pull up from three pt range, his pump fake was working and he didn't miss once on the Rondo floater (keep in mind this was a 4 on 4 scrimmage). He crossed Barlow and pulled up a few times and rarely did he shoot and miss. I sat next to an OKC scout looking at Hummel and talked to him and he said the most impressive person at practice was AJ.
The next best looking player was surprisingly...Kelsey Barlow. I got a chance to sit down with him for about 15 minutes after and based on what he, and matt painter, said on the situation last year, he seems to have his head on straight. He shot a few threes and hit them. He is transitioning to the wing so that he can guard the opposing team's best wing. He will still play point when/if lew jack needs a breather.
As i'm sure everybody wants to know, Hummel looked good. He has great touch, but it was a little worrisome watching him go up for lay ups and rebounds as he looked a little timid. Hopefully time will fix that. Also, Carroll looks to have extended his game beyond the 3 pt line. Marcius got yelled at a lot for being in bad position, surely he won't be used for too much more than a space filler and getting a few rebounds.
Painter also said he plans on redshirting one of the freshman forwards he just doesn't know who yet.
